TITRATION OF SODIUM CHLORIDE AND HYDROCHLORIC ACID Page 1

Titration is a technique that chemists use to determine the unknown concentration of a
known solution Because, we know what the chemical is, we know how it will react with other
chemicals and we can use that reaction to determine the concentration of the solution by
measuring the formation of product(s). In the case of an unknown concentration of acid, we can
use a known concentration of hydroxide base. This point, where all acid was consumed and there
is no excess of base, is called the equivalence point. We can use this equivalence point to
determine the initial concentration of acid using a series of calculations. The goal of the titration
is to get as close as possible to the equivalence point by careful addition of the base; this will
ensure the calculated acid concentration is as close to the true value as
possible. (file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/briann/My

The main objective of the experiment was to calculate molarity based on titration.
Moreover, the experiment also determined the concentration of NaOH solution and distinguished
the pH before adding of NaOH. Lastly, the experiment determined the pH at end point which is
11.

The table below flaunts the result of the said titration:

4. 32 M 25 ml 0 pH 50ml 14ml 36ml 7 11

Based on the table shown above, the concentration which was 4.32 M came from volume
used which was 36 ml was multiplied by 3 m, and which was divided on both sides with 25 ml
which was the volume of HCL. The volume used was came on initial volume (50 ml) minus final
volume which was 14 ml. After a few minutes the clear solution of HCL was turned into clear
fuschia pink. And it was tested with the use of pH paper, and pH 11 was observed which means
the solution was acidic. The accurate color of the solution must be light pink.

The scientific skills that the experimenters have established and need to enhance more are
the following: observing and calculating skill were the strengths of the experimenters. In which
they visibly seen the abrupt change in color of the solution and with regards of computing the
concentration of the solution. They also established good set-ups of the solution of their

experiment. The witness of the experimenters is in terms of data gathering or the presentation of
data and also the adding of NaOH on the HCl which brought into its dark color. Titration using a
burette, to measure volumes of solution accurately, requires careful and organized methods of
working, manipulative skills allied to mental concentration, and attention to detail.
