RATIO AND PROPORTION

The ratio of a to b is a/b. The ratio of a to b can also be written
as a to b or as a:b. Because a ratio is a quotient, its
denominator cannot be zero.

A proportion is an equation showing that two ratios are equal.

If the ratio a/b is equal to the ratio c/d, then the following
proportion can be written:

The numbers a and d are the extremes of the proportion.

The numbers b and c are the means of the proportion.

Here are two properties that are useful when solving a proportion.

Cross Product Property The product of the extremes equals

the product of the means.
If a/b = c/d, then ad = bc.

Reciprocal Property If two ratios are equal, then their

reciprocals are also equal.

If a/b = c/d, then b/a = d/c.

Properties of Proportion
Using the same proportion a/b = c/d, provided that no term is
zero, the following equations can be derived. These equations are
also properties.

Properties Equations Examples

a/b = c/d 2/3 = 4/6
1. Cross Product a/b = c/d 2/3 = 4/6
2. Alternative a/c =b/d 2/4 = 3/6
3. Inversion b/a = d/c 3/2 = 6/4
4. Addition a+b/b = c+d/d 2+3/3 = 4+6/6
5. Subtraction a-b/b = c-d/d 2-3/3 = 4-6/6
6. Combination a+b/a-b = c+d/c-d 2+3/2-3 = 4+6/4-6

Activity Card
Problem 1
SOLUTION
JH = FGOpposite sides of a are congruent.
=5 Substitute 5 for FG.
FJ = GH Opposite sides of a are congruent.
=3 Substitute 3 for GH.
ANSWER- In FGHJ, JH = 5 and FJ = 3.

Problem 2
SOLUTION
1. By Theorem 2, the opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent,
so m<R = m<P =70.
2. By Theorem 3, the consecutive angles of a parallelogram are
supplementary.
m<Q + m<P = 180 Consecutive angles of a are supplementary.
m<Q + 70 = 180 Substitute 70 for m<P
m<Q = 110 Subtract 70 from each side.
3. By Theorem 2, the opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent,
so m<S = m<Q =110.
ANSWER The measure of <R is 70,the measure of <Q is 110, and the
measure of <S is 110.
Problem 3
SOLUTION
TX = XV Diagonals of a bisect each other.
=3 Substitute 3 for XV.

Problem 4
SOLUTION
By Theorem 4, the diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular. Therefore,
<BEC is a right angle, so v BEC is a right triangle.
By the Corollary to the Triangle Sum Theorem, the acute angles of a right
triangle are complementary. So, x = 90 60 = 30.

Problem 5
Solution
a. The frame is a parallelogram because both pairs of opposite sides are
congruent.
b. The frame is not a rectangle because the diagonals are not congruent.

Problem 6
Solution
1. PQRS is an isosceles trapezoid and <R and <S are a pair of base
angles. So, m<R =m<S =50.
2. Because <S and <P are same-side interior angles formed by parallel
lines, they are supplementary. So, m<P =180 50 = 130.
3. Because <Q and <P are a pair of base angles of an isosceles trapezoid,
m<Q = m<P =130.

Problem 7
SOLUTION
Use the formula for the midsegment of a trapezoid.
DG = (EF + CH ) Formula for midsegment of a trapezoid
= (8 + 20 ) Substitute 8 for EF and 20 for CH.
= (28) Add.
= 14 Multiply.
ANSWER- The length of the midsegment DG is 14.

Problem 8
Solution
Express both quantities in the same units of measure so that the units divide
out. Write the fraction in simplest form.
a.

b.
Problem 9
Solution
a. x/6 = 5/9 b. 3/x = 4/7
9x = 6(5) Use cross product. x/3 = 7/4 Use reciprocals.
x = 30/9 = 10/3 or 3 1/3 x = 3 * 7/4 = 21/4 or 5
