Lesson 3 Climate in the United States pgs.

26 29

Temperature: is how hot or cold the air is.

Precipitation: is water that falls to Earths surface as rain, sleet, or
snow.
Climate: is the kind of weather a place has over a long time
Weather: is how the temperature is day by day.
Climate can affect our lives. For example if it is cold we have to wear jackets, glove
etc. if it is hot we can turn on the fan or the air conditioner.

United States has different climates. The reasons are the following:
*How far from the equator? The closer to the equator the hotter the temperature is.
The farther we are the colder the climate is.

*What is the elevation? The higher we are, the colder the temperature is.

*How far from the oceans? They warm the land in winter and cool it is summer.
Humidity: moisture in the air

*What landforms are nearby? The landforms are near a place also affect its
climate.

Lesson 4: Natural Resources pgs. 32 36

A natural resource is something found in nature that people can use, such as
water, soil and trees.

LAND RESOURCES (soil and trees)

People depend on natural resources to grow food, raise animals and build homes.

Soil: fertile soil helps farmers grow foods. Farmers grow wheat, corn, fruits,
soybeans, and other crops. Ranchers need grasses and crops to feed their
cattle and other livestock.
Trees: people use trees to make homes and many wood products, such as
furniture. Also, pencils and books.
Renewable resources: are those that can be made again by nature or
people. For example: trees.

WATER RESOURCES

Water is the most important natural resource. We cant live without it. Lakes,
rivers, streams and groundwater supply most of the fresh water people use.
Groundwater is the water that sinks beneath Earths surface when it rains or
snows.
People use water in many ways: to drink, to cook, to wash, for boating and for fun.
Industries also use water. An industry is all the businesses that make one kind of
product or provide one kind of service.
Water can also be used as a source of power. The energy from moving water can
be used as electricity. This electricity is used to light homes and ruin machineries in
factories.

MINERALS AND FUELS

Minerals: are natural substances found in rocks. For example: copper, gold,
silver and other metals. They are used to make wire, coins, pots, jewelry.
Others are used to construct buildings.
Fuels: it is used to make heat or energy. Oil, natural gas and coal are
examples of fuels. People use natural gas to cook food, heat buildings and
run machines. Also, to produce electricity. Others are used to make
gasoline, plastics, paints, tires and many other products.
Nonrenewable resources: they cannot be replaced. For example: minerals
and fuels. If they are used up they are gone forever.

PEOPLE AND RESOURCES

People use natural resources and they change their environment. Because
resources are limited we must use them wisely. This is conservation.
Conservation is the protecting of natural resources and using them wisely. One
way to conserve resources is by recycling.
