Essential Understanding How can you use number bonds to decompose numbers?
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)
Rationale
Address the following I am teaching this objective to help students understand how to decompose numbers 1-

Why are you teaching this

Why is it important for
students to learn this It is important for students to learn the concept because as they get older, they will need

What misconceptions

think it equals to 45 instead of 9.

Students Have students go back to their seats, get out their math journal and
answer the journal question that they glued into their journal at the
beginning of the lesson.
Stations:
- Number bond plates: I will have four plates that are divided
into three parts. Two parts will be labeled as the Part and the
other section will say Whole. I will have number cards for
them to use.
- Number bond pipe cleaners: I will make number bonds out of
pipe cleaners and the students will be able to use either
cubes or counting bears to practice.
- Hanger bonds: I will have four hangers with a number on the
top of the hanger and I will have that same number of clothes
pins at the bottom of the hanger so the students can practice
making different number bonds a different way.
- Hula hoop bonds: I will place three hula hoops to make a
number bond and connect two of the hula hoops to the third
hula hoop using tape. This is where the students will be able
to do an interactive number bond.
Meeting your students If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?
learners The lesson connects to the interests of my students because it is a hands-on lesson that
requires the students to do fun activities.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This lesson connects to the local community, because students will need to be able to
add when they go to the grocery store, out to eat or shopping.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
I will differentiate my instruction for students who need additional challenge by seeing if
the students can do number bonds using numbers 11-20.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Since number bonds are only numbers I think students with additional language support
will be able to engage in this lesson without additional help.
