Dilbert

Themaincharacterinthestrip,Dilbertisastereotypicaltechnicallymindedsinglemale.UntilOctober2014,he
wasusuallydepictedwearingawhitedressshirt,blacktrousersandaredandblackstripedtiethatinexplicably
curvesupwardafterOctober13,2014,hisstandardapparelchangedtoaredpoloshirtwithanamebadgeona
lanyardaroundhisneck.[6]Dilbertisaskilledengineerbuthasapoorsocialandromanticlife.

PointyHairedBoss

Theunnamed,obliviousmanageroftheengineeringdivisionofDilbert'scompany.ScottAdamsstatesthathe
nevernamedhimsothatpeoplecanimaginehimtobetheirboss.Inearlierstripshewasdepictedasa
stereotypicallatemiddleagedbaldingmiddlemanagerwithjowlsitwasnotuntillaterthathedevelopedhis
signature"pointyhair"andthejowlsdisappeared.Heishopelesslyincompetentatmanagement,andoftentriesto
compensateforhislackofskillswithcountlessgrouptherapysessionsandbusinessstrategieswhichusuallynever
bearfruit.Hedoesnotunderstandtechnicalissuesbutalwaystriestodisguisethis,usuallybyusingbuzzwordshe
alsodoesnotunderstand.TheBosstreatshisemployeesalternatelywithenthusiasmorneglectheoftenusesthem
tohisownendsregardlessoftheconsequencestothem.Adamshimselfwrotethat"He'snotsadistic,just
uncaring".Hislevelofintelligencevariesfromnearvegetativetoperceptiveandclever,dependingonthestrip's
comicneeds.Hisutterlackofconsistentbusinessethics,however,isperfectlyconsistent.Hisbrotherisademon
named"Phil,thePrinceofInsufficientLight",andaccordingtoAdams,thepointyhairisintendedtoremindone
ofdevil'shorns.

Wally

Oneoftheoldestengineers,Wallywasoriginallyaworkertryingtogetfiredtogetaseverancepackage.Hehates
workandavoidsitwheneverhecan.Heoftencarriesacupofcoffee,calmlysippingfromiteveninthemidstof
chaosorofficeshakingrevelations.Wallyisextremelycynical.HeisevenmoresociallyineptthanDilbert
(thoughfarlessselfawareofthefact),andreferencestohislackofpersonalhygienearenotuncommon.Likethe
PointyHairedBoss,Wallyisutterlylackinginethicsandwilltakeadvantageofanysituationtomaximizehis
personalgainwhiledoingtheleastpossibleamountofhonestwork.Squatandbalding,Wallyisalmostinvariably
portrayedwearingashortsleeveddressshirtandtie.AdamshasstatedthatWallywasbasedonaPacificBell
coworkerofhiswhowasinterestedinagenerousemployeebuyoutprogramforthecompany'sworst

employees.ThishadtheeffectofcausingthismanwhomAdamsdescribesas"oneofthemorebrilliantpeople
I'vemet"toworkhardatbeingincompetent,rude,andgenerallypoorathisjobtoqualifyforthebuyout
program.AdamshassaidthatthisinspiredthebasiclazinessandamoralityofWally'scharacter.Despitethese
personalitytraitsWallyisacceptedaspartofDilbert,Ted,Alice,andAsok'sclique.Althoughhisrelationshipwith
AliceisoftenantagonisticandDilbertoccasionallydeniesbeinghisfriend,theiractionsshowatleastacertain
acceptanceofhim.

Alice

Oneofthemorecompetentengineers.Sheisoftenfrustratedatherwork,becauseshedoesnotgetproper
recognition,whichshebelievesisbecausesheisfemale,thoughinrealityitislikelybecauseshehasaquick,often
violenttemper,sometimesputtingher"FistofDeath"touse,evenwiththePointyHairedBoss.Aliceisbasedona
womanthatScottAdamsworkedwithnamedAnita,whoisdescribedassharingAlice's"pinksuit,fluffyhair,
technicalproficiency,coffeeobsession,andtakenocrapattitude."

Dogbert

Dilbert'santhropomorphicpetdogisthesmartestdogonEarth.Dogbertisamegalomaniacintellectualdog,
planningtoonedayconquertheworld.Heoncesucceeded,butbecameboredwiththeensuingpeace,andquit.
Oftenseeninhighrankingconsultantortechnicalsupportjobs,heconstantlyabuseshispowerandfoolsthe
managementofDilbert'scompany,thoughconsideringtheintelligenceofthecompany'smanagementingeneral
andDilbert'sbossinparticular,thisisnotveryhardtodo.Healsoenjoyspullingscamsonunsuspectingand
usuallydullcustomerstostealtheirmoney.However,despiteDogbert'scynicalexterior,hehasbeenknowntopull
hismasteroutofsometightjams.Dogbert'snatureasapetwasmoreemphasizedduringtheearlieryearsofthe
stripasthestripprogressed,referencestohisactinglikeadogbecamelesscommon,althoughhestillwagshistail
whenheperpetrateshisscams.WhenanolderDilbertarriveswhiletimetravelingfromthefuture,herefersto
Dogbertas"majesty",indicatingthatDogbertwillonedayindeedruletheworld...again,andmakeworshipping
himretroactivesohecouldbossaroundtimetravelers.

Catbert

Catbertisafictionalcat,andthe"evildirectorofhumanresources"intheDilbertcomicstrip.Hewassupposed
tobeaonetimecharacterbutresonatedwithreaderssowellthatAdamsbroughthimbackastheHRdirector.

Asok

Ayoungintern,heworksveryhardbutdoesnotalwaysgetproperrecognition.Asokisintenselyintelligentbut
naiveaboutcorporatelifetheshatteringofhisoptimisticillusionsbecomesfrequentcomicfodder.HeisIndian,
andhasgraduatedfromtheIndianInstitutesofTechnology(IIT).Theotherworkers,especiallytheboss,often
unwittinglytrampleonhisculturalbeliefs.OntheoccasionswhenAsokmentionsthis,heisnormallyignored.His
testscores(aperfect1600ontheoldSAT)andhisIQof240showthatheisthesmartestmemberofthe
engineeringteam.NonethelessheisoftencalleduponbytheBosstodooddjobs,andinmeetingshisideasare
usuallylefthanging.HeisalsoseenregularlyatthelunchtablewithWallyandDilbert,experiencingjarring
realizationsofthenatureofcorporatelife.Thereareafewjokesabouthispsychicpowers,whichhelearnedatthe
IIT.Yetdespitehisintelligence,ethicsandmysticalpowers,AsoksometimestakesadvicefromWallyintheartsof
laziness,andfromDilbertinsurvivingtheoffice.AsofFebruary7,2014,Asokisofficiallygay,whichnever
impactsanystorylinesbutmerelycommemoratesadecisionbytheIndianSupremeCourttoupholdanantigay

AnengineerwhoisoftenseenhangingoutwithWally.Heisreferencedbynamemoreofteninoldercomics,but
heisstillseenoccasionallynow.HeisafriendofDilbertandWally,butisnotseeninteractingwithAliceorAsok
asmuch.HehasbeenacceptedintoDilbert'sclique.Hehasbeenfiredandkillednumeroustimes(forexample,
beingpusheddownaflightofstairsandbecomingpossessed),soitislikelythatheisrehiredandbroughtbackto
lifeinasimilarwaytotheothermaincharacterswhodieandcomeback.Inadditiontothis,heisoftenpromoted
andgivenbenefitsovertheotheremployees.Tedhasawifeandkidswhoarereferencedmultipletimesandseen
onatleastoneoccasion.ScottAdamsreferstohimasTedtheGenericGuybecausewheneverScottneedstofire
orkillsomeone,heusesTed,butslowlyovertimeTedhasbecomehisowncharacter.

Legacy
ThepopularityofthecomicstripwithinthecorporatesectorhasledtotheDilbertcharacterbeingusedinmany
businessmagazinesandpublications,includingseveralappearancesonthecoverofFortuneMagazine.Many
newspapersrunthecomicintheirbusinesssectionratherthanintheregularcomicssection(similartothewaythat
Doonesburyisoftenfeaturedintheeditorialsection,duetoitspointedcommentary).

Criticismandparody

MediaanalystNormanSolomonandcartoonistTomTomorrowclaim[8]thatAdams'scaricaturesofcorporate
cultureseemtoprojectempathyforwhitecollarworkers,butthesatireultimatelyplaysintothehandsofupper
corporatemanagementitself.SolomondescribesthecharactersofDilbertasdysfunctionaltimewasters,noneof
whomoccupiesapositionhigherthanmiddlemanagement,andwhoseinefficienciesdetractfromcorporatevalues
suchas'productivity'and'growth'.Dilbertandhisofficematesoftenfindthemselvesbaffledorvictimizedbythe
whimsofmanagerialbehavior,buttheyneverseemtoquestionitopenly.SolomoncitestheXeroxcorporation's
useofDilbertstripsandcharactersininternallydistributed'inspirational'pamphlets:

"XeroxmanagementhadrecognizedwhatmoregullibleDilbertreadersdidnot:Dilbertisanoffbeat
sugarysubstancethathelpsthecorporatemedicinegodown.TheDilbertphenomenonacceptsand
perverselyeggsonmanynegativeaspectsofcorporateexistenceasunchangeablefacetsofhuman
nature...AsXeroxmanagersgrasped,Dilbertspeakstosomeveryrealworkexperienceswhile
simultaneouslyerodinginclinationstofightforbetterworkingconditions."

AdamsrespondedintheFebruary2,1998[9]stripandinhisbookTheJoyofWork,simplybyrestatingSolomon's
argument,apparentlysuggestingthatitwasabsurdandrequirednorebuttal.

In1997,TomVanderbiltwroteinasimilarveininTheBafflermagazine:

"Laborunionshaven'tadoptedDilbertcharactersasinsignia.Butcorporationsindroveshaverushed
tolinkthemselveswithDilbert.Why?Dilbertmirrorsthemassmedia'scrocodiletearsforworking
peopleandechoestheambientnoisesfromWallStreet."

In1998,BillGriffith,creatorofZippythePinhead,chidedDilbertforcrudedrawingsandsimplistichumor.He
wrote,"Longsincepsychicallykidnappedbythegaudy,mindlesslyhyperactiveworldofTV,(readers)nolonger
demandorexpectcomicstripstobecompelling,challenging,oreveninteresting.Enter'Cathy'.And'Dilbert.'
Sure,comicsarestillfunny.Itsjustthatthehumorhasalmostno'nutritional'value.Inthetinyspaceallotedto
them,dailystripshavealltoosuccessfullyadaptedtotheirnewenvironment.InthisDarwiniansetup,what
thrivesaresimplydrawnpanels,minimaldialogue,andalotofheadandshouldershots.Anythingmore

complicatedisdeemed'toohardtoread.'Afull,richdrawingstyleisadrawback.Simplicity,evencrudity,
rules."[10]AdamslashedbackwithacomicstripcalledPippytheZiphead,"crammingasmuchartworkinas
possiblesonoonewillnoticethere'sonlyonejoke...[and]it'sonthereader."[11]Dilbertnotesthatthestripis
"nothingbutaclownwithasmallheadwhosaysrandomthings",andDogbertrespondsthatheis"maintaininghis
artisticintegritybycreatingacomicthatnoonewillenjoy."[12]InSeptemberofthesameyear,Griffithmocked
AdamsbymimickinghisPippytheZipheadcreationwithastripshowingstiff,Dilbertlikecreationsinanoffice
settingandoneofthecharacterssaying,"Isenseajokewasdelivered".[13]

Inthelate1990s,anamateurcartoonistnamedKarlHrnellbegansubmittingacomicstriptoSavageDragon
creatorErikLarsenwhichparodiedbothDilbert[14]andtheImageComicsseriesTheSavageDragon.Thissoon
becamearegularfeatureintheSavageDragoncomicbook,titledTheSavageDragonbertandHitler'sBrainbert
("Hitler'sBrainbert"beingalooseparodyofbothDogbertandtheSavageDragonvillainidentifiedasAdolf
Hitler'sdisembodied,superpoweredbrain).Thestripbeganasaspecificparodyofthecomicbookitself,set
looselywithintheofficestructureofDilbert,withHrnelldoinganemulationofAdams'scartooningstyle.[14]

Language

Adamshasinventedwordswhichhavebecomepopularamongfansindescribingtheirownofficeenvironments,
suchas"Induhvidual".ThistermisbasedontheAmericanEnglishslangexpression"duh!"Theconscious
misspellingofindividualasinduhvidualisapejorativetermforpeoplewhoarenotinDogbert'sNewRulingClass
(DNRC).ItscoiningisexplainedinDilbertNewsletter#6.Thestriphasalsopopularizedtheusageoftheterms
"coworker"andPHB.

Management

In1997,ScottAdamsmasqueradedasamanagementconsultanttoLogitechexecutives(asRayMebert),withthe
cooperationofthecompany'svicechairman.Heactedinmuchthewaythatheportraysmanagementconsultants
inthecomicstrip,withanarrogantmannerandbizarresuggestions,suchascomparingmissionstatementsto
broccolisoup.HeconvincedtheexecutivestochangetheirexistingmissionstatementfortheirNewVentures
Groupfrom"provideLogitechwithprofitablegrowthandrelatednewbusinessareas"to"scoutprofitablegrowth
opportunitiesinrelationships,bothinternallyandexternally,inemerging,missioninclusivemarkets,andexplore
newparadigmsandthenfilterandcommunicateandevangelizethefindings".[15][16][17]

Todemonstratewhatcanbeachievedwiththemostmundaneobjectsifplannedcorrectlyandimaginatively,
Adamshasworkedwithcompaniestodevelop"dream"productsforDilbertandcompany.In2001,hecollaborated
withdesigncompanyIDEOtocomeupwiththe"perfectcubicle",afittingcreationsincemanyoftheDilbert
stripsmakefunofthestandardcubicledeskandtheenvironmentwhichitcreates.Theresultwasbothwhimsical
andpractical.[18][19]

Thisprojectwasfollowedin2004withdesignsforDilbert'sUltimateHouse(https://web.archive.org/web/2004100
1095014/www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/duh/index.html)(abbreviatedasDUH).Anenergyefficientbuilding
wastheresult,designedtopreventmanyofthelittleproblemsthatseemtocreepintoanormalbuilding.For
instance,tosavetimespentbuyinganddecoratingaChristmastreeeveryyear,thehousehasalarge(yet
unapparent)closetadjacenttothelivingroomwherethetreecanbestoredfromyeartoyear.

In1995,DilbertwasthefirstsyndicatedcomicstriptobepublishedforfreeontheInternet.Puttinghisemail
addressineachDilbertstrip,Adamscreateda"directchannelto[his]customers,"allowinghimtomodifythestrip
basedontheirfeedback.[20]JoeZabelstatedthatDilberthadalargeinfluenceonmanyofthewebcomicsthat
followedit,establishingthe"nerdcore"genreasitfounditsaudience.[21]

InApril2008,ScottAdamsannouncedthatUnitedMediawouldbeinstitutinganinteractivefeatureon
Dilbert.com,allowingfanstowritespeechbubblesand,inthenearfuture,interactwithAdamsaboutthecontent
ofthestrips.Adamshasspokenpositivelyaboutthechange,saying,"Thismakescartooningacompetitive

InOctober2007,theCatfishBendCasinoinBurlington,Iowanotifieditsstaffthatthecasinowasclosingandthey
weregoingtobelaidoff.DavidSteward,anemployeeofsevenyears,thenpostedonanofficebulletinboardthe
Dilbertstrip[24]ofOctober26,2007thatcomparedmanagementdecisionstothoseof"drunkenlemurs".The
casinocalledthis"veryoffensive"theyidentifiedhimfromasurveillancetape,firedhim,andtriedtopreventhim
fromreceivingunemploymentinsurancebenefits.However,anadministrativelawjudgeruledinDecember2007
thathewouldreceivebenefits,ashisactionwasnotintentionalmisbehavior.ScottAdamssaidthatitmightbethe
firstconfirmedcaseofanemployeebeingfiredforpostingaDilbertcartoon.[25]OnFebruary20,2008,thefirstof
aseriesofDilbertstripsshowedWallybeingcaughtpostingacomicstripwhich"comparesmanagerstodrunken
lemurs".[26]AdamslatersaidthatfansshouldsticktopostingGarfieldstrips,asnoonegetsfiredforthat.
