The Law of Increasing Returns

Welcoming Year 2008 was the typhoon Frank. It began relentlessly across Panay Is
land with strong wind gusts taking lives and houses along with it. The governmen
t again asks for finances to provide services it does not actually give. The adm
inistration really has a way of getting money from pockets without us noticing i
t. Month after month, year after year, news of landslides after rainfall tops th
e headlines. Calamities like this continue to happen because we continue to negl
ect the fact that with our mountains barren of trees, nothing could save us from
heavy rains and typhoons that seem to come and go. Then i begun to ask myself,
"are people blind? When will they start to open their eyes to see these clear cu
t signs? Oceans lash our coasts. Deserts burn. The sky provides no shelter. Turm
oil of Biblical proportions threatens not just our weather but life itself. Glob
al Warming is upon us.
Global warming is a fact. It is here. It is now unstoppable. the polar ice cap i
s melting. Polar Bears are endangered. Greenland is actually turning green, shed
ding off its layers of ice. Hurricanes are blowing with more force. Tornadoes ar
e growing in numbers. Water levels are increasing, threatening to flood. Human e
xistence is in jeopardy And, of course, the deserts are starting to burn.
For over 100 years, scientists try to depict phenomenal happenings in earth. But
the truth is, there is still no scientific consensus on Global Warming. Some cl
aim that humans are the chief cause of the warming that has occurred over roughl
y the past century, while others claim that our role has been relatively insigni
ficant as compared to natural forces causing a change in earth's climate. Theref
ore the debate roughly defined here centers on the question of whether human are
the chief or most significant cause of the recent global warming trend seen ove
r the past century and today.
Going back, we might wonder, "what about these storms?" Well, what about it? We
can see the weather changing before our eyes. We are experiencing death, destruc
tion, plagues extinction, and biblical catastrophes at alarming rates. Any fool
can see. It is important to consider that the disaster of hurricanes is a result
of bad government not taking care of the levies.
Want to know more ugly truths? Ice is melting on the edge of the caps because it
always melts in the summer. Research shows that the core of the ice is actually
thicker than ever. And the burning of the deserts? Well, that's what deserts do
, isn't it?
Still the undeniable fact that the earth is getting warmer leads to a range of s
eparate debates that need not consider the underlying cause. Call me bitter bitt
er, but from where i stand, all these debates on Global Warming, all seemed poin
tless. Of all these theories, I can seriously say that they are just wasting the
ir time, their energy and of course the government's money. Why are we looking f
or the problem instead of finding the answers? Could scientists come up with a c
onsensus before its too late? Why not stop making the problem a problem and put
action to work?
To do that, a change must be made. Successfully combating global warming require
s a national transition to renewable energy sources. Forests, as part of the nat
ural ecosystem, play a critical role. They maintain the nature's balance.
From day one, I become familiar with the idea that one cannot force others mind
to believe what to believe, hear what to hear and do what to do. But one must re
member that the universe pays every man in his own little ways; if you smile, it
smiles upon you; if you think, you will be entertained by thinkers; give hatred
, indifference and scorn and your return is hatred, indifference and scorn; but
if you love the world and seek for the good therein, you will be surrounded by l
oving friends and nature will pour into your lap the treasures of the earth. We
must remember that in whatever we do, we must render it with willingness for onl
y then will we uncover the law of increasing returns.
