off with a pancake break-
fast hosted by the fire de-
partment and featured vari-
ous activities such as canoe
races, cake decorating and
free concerts. The Town was
fortunate to use the Calgary
Stampede stage, at no cost,
so bands and magicians
could perform with no fear
of the weather. The sun was
shining, making it a nearly
perfect day to celebrate our
heritage.
“This was the biggest turn-
out we’ve ever had, I think,”
said Dwight Stanford, Town
of Strathmore Chief Admin-
istrative Officer. Cakes were
decorated with a three-min-
ute deadline, and then auc-
tioned off, with 100 per cent
of the money raised going to
the Wheatland food bank.

new board was formed
in October of 2009, and
their first order of busi-
ness was to distribute
the funds, which had
been sitting from the
former board. The 2010

sisting families in need

Residents who went to the open house
on July 5 were hoping for an open forum,
where they could sit, ask their questions,
and finally get some answers. Instead it was
more of an information session, with the
mayor, other members of council and the
administration offices there to help answer
questions. Many people came for both the
dog park and RV parking topics, such as
Josh and Shannon Winters.
“I’m here for both, I don’t want the dog
park behind my house where it was origi-
nally proposed. I think they should abolish
the RV thing all together,” said Josh. They
don’t want to deal with the traffic issues

In 2003 the Lions Club took over what
is now known as the Canadian Lions
Eyeglass Recycling Centre, CLERC. Used
eyeglasses are collected in various places
throughout the country.
Art Eeles, a member of the Strathmore
Lions, gathers eyeglasses which are do-
nated to the Lions Club and brings them
into Calgary to Bernie Gribben, chair of
the program, when he is making a trip
into the city.
“People drop them off there, some
drop them off at my place,” said Eeles. “I
must have taken in a half a dozen bags,
since then I’ve taken in another few bags
full within the last year.”
“We have Lions in Strathmore who col-
lect glasses for us, and the Strathmore
Lions club has always been very support-
ive,” said Gribben.
Gribben, from Calgary, has been a
member since 1996 and is the chair of
the program. CLERC began as a partner-
ship with Operation Eyesight Universal,
the Lions and the Alberta government;
the Calgary Correctional Centre. Opera-
tion Eyesight is an organization which
has been distributing glasses through out
the World for close to 40 years.
The organization approached Gribben
in 2003 saying they would like to change
their focus and wanting to know if the
Lions would take over.
“I said ‘ I have no idea but I can bring
it to our organization’ and the Lions ac-
cepted the proposal on a number of con-
ditions,” said Gribben.
One of the conditions was it must be a
Canadian program and not just a Calgary
one, and the second was Gribben was to
look after it. “I continue after all these
years to oversee the program.”
The program collects glasses from
coast to coast in Canada and then they
are shipped to Calgary. They receive ap-
proximately 30,000 pair of glasses each
month. Upon arrival in Calgary, Gribben
takes the eyeglasses to the Calgary Cor-

Gary Abel, a Bylaw Officer, doesn’t have
an opinion about either, but came more for
the RV Bylaw because it directly affects him.
He has been here since April and has just
been doing his job by enforcing the bylaw.
David Dzuba and Deb Hodl were at the
open house to discuss the dog park. Both
want to see the dog park created, but one
of their combined issues is they do not
want to have to drive to walk their dogs,
and want to see some of the green space
around Strathmore put to better use.
For both items being discussed at the
open house, there seemed to be a mix of
opinions, and it will be interesting to see
how things turnout.

has a program where the inmates work
on the donated glasses, and it helps them
learn practical skills, said Davio.
“We then ship those glasses to mis-
sion groups in Canada, and they are re-
sponsible for taking them overseas and
distributing them to needy people,” said
Gribben.
They plan to host an open house for all
of the people who have helped over the
years with CLERC. There were two dates
set, either October 13 or the 20. The rea-
son for this is because the Premier and
the Justice Minister have been invited,
and they are trying to coordinate a date
which suits both. The premier is a Lion’s
member and that’s one reason why he
was invited. Rick Forti from the Calgary
Correctional Centre, works closely with
Gribben and CLERC, and both men will
be heading to Mexico with about 40 other
members in November to help distribute
the glasses.
CLERC have distributed over two mil-
lion pair of eyeglasses and are hoping in
September they will ship out their three
millionth pair. “We will specially mark
that pair like we did for our one millionth
and two millionth pairs,” said Gribben.
“It’s quite a detailed program and we are
proud to say we have helped close to
three million people.”
The donation boxes are set up in
schools, libraries, pharmacies anywhere
the club thinks they will be able to re-
ceive donations. In Strathmore the boxes
are in the drug marts, the hospital and
the optometrist, among other places.

from Calgary started an ongo-
ing research project at the Global
Training Centre last month. On
June 14, partners Troy Feick and
Dave Perehudoff showed off the
duke-o-bore, which Perehudoff
had created and gave a demon-
stration of how they expect it to
help them in researching sewage
tanks. Some of it has been done
before, but hasn’t had proper test-
ing. What Perehudoff has created
is basically a device which uses
a Dutch auguer to auguer the
ground. After drilling a hole in
the ground, a vented pipe goes in
through that hole, and bentonite
chips go on the bottom to stop
water from coming in. Then a
layer of sand goes through where
the vents are on the pipe, which
allows fluid to go through it. On
top of the sand is more benton-
ite, which stops any ground wa-
ter leaking into the chamber and
allows the group to test what’s
going through the chambers and
down below.
“With the new Standard Oper-
ating Procedure, a lot of people
used to working in the conven-
tional field are confused with the
new rules or not up to speed with
new technology. There is not a lot
of onsite testing, or onsite dem-
onstration and some people learn
better that way,” said Feick.
“We are doing a test site. We’re
taking our chambers over to the
field here and doing different
methods of burial, we’re doing
one with 12 inches (of soil) over
top of it, one at 18 inches and an-
other at 24 inches of soil. What
that will do is in the winter, it will
tell us what kind treatment we get
at different depths and what kind
of temperature is maintained un-
derground.”

Someone from the group will be
going to the field about once a
month to check it. In the winter
they will check it for temperature.

July is Motorcycle Safety Month
RCMP Alberta Integrated Traf-
fic Units (Sheriffs and RCMP), in
support of Road Safety Vision
2010 and with our enforcement
partners, will be involved in a
joint effort to reduce the harm
that results from motorcycle col-
lisions.
The summer months and
warm weather mean an increase
in the number of motorcycles on
the roads. The Alberta Integrated
Traffic Units want to stress the
importance of sharing the road
and using smart traffic safety
habits to maximize the safety of
Albertans. Although speed and
alcohol are often the root causes
behind motorcycle collisions, in-
experience is also a factor. It is
imperative that new riders devel-
op their skills in safe motorcycle
operation. This includes partici-
pating in driver training courses,
using bikes suitable to their skill
level and wearing approved safe-
ty equipment.
A motorcyclist’s relationship
with the road has more to do
with the journey than the des-
tination. Freedom is part of the
motorcycle experience but along
with that freedom comes a high-
er risk.
Motorcyclists don’t have the
same distractions as drivers in
a car (cup holders, cell phones,
CD players, computer plug-ins,
etc) but they still need to be
aware that the drivers around
them might have their minds fo-
cused on other things.
The Alberta Integrated Traf-
fic Units are asking drivers to
be aware of motorcyclists out
on the road and to be aware of
the space motorcyclists need to
maintain their safety on the road.
“Look twice for motorcyclists
when approaching intersections
or changing lanes and never un-
derestimate the speed of a bike,”
says Inspector James Stiles,
Officer in Charge of “K” Divi-
sion Traffic Services. “Failure to
yield the right of way is a lead-
ing cause of motorcycle/ vehicle
collisions.”
The Integrated Traffic Units
also wants to remind motor-
cyclists that when they head
out on the road, they represent
thousands of people who love to
ride. Motorcyclists are encour-
aged to ride defensively and
make every effort to enhance
their visibility. Be alert at inter-
sections and make eye contact
with drivers before proceeding.
Stay aware of what’s going on
behind you because a rear-end
crash can be deadly. Position
yourself to be seen and stay out
of drivers’ blind spots. Realize
that your speed is often mis-
judged by drivers.
Every year, we respond to
many collisions in Alberta in
which there is unnecessary inju-
ry and tragic loss of life. By in-
creasing our public education ef-
forts, the Integrated Traffic Units
aim to make Alberta’s roadways
safer for everyone.

A scavenger hunt, water balloons, and relay

races were a part of the curriculum for stu-
dents at Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy, on
June 28. A field day was set up for the kids to
have fun and celebrate the end of the school

spoons relay race, and a plate relay. Due to
the wind the plates couldn’t be balanced atop

The second annual Canadian Rockies International Rodeo took place this past weekend at the
Strathmore and District Agricultural Grounds. Men and women took part in various rodeo events
and promised to be back in Strathmore next July.

Last weekend saw the
second annual Canadian
Rockies International
Rodeo, CRIR, come to
Strathmore. The rodeo
consisted of representa-
tives from the Alberta
Rockies Gay Rodeo Asso-
ciation, ARGRA, and the
International Gay Rodeo
Association, IGRA. This
was the 17th annual Ca-
nadian Gay Rodeo, but
only Strathmore’s second
time hosting it. President
of ARGRA, Greg Hols-
worth, said they plan to
host it again in Strath-
more next year, and in
years to come.
“We couldn’t be hap-
pier to be here, we’ve
felt nothing but wel-
come,” said Holsworth.
The festivities started on
Canada Day this year and
ran until the fourth. The
rodeo boasted the usual
events which would be
seen at any small town
rodeo, with the biggest
difference being men and
women could compete in
all events. Some events
were created specifically
for the gay rodeo: steer
decorating for instance,
goat dressing and wild
drag.
For the goat dressing it
was a two-person team,
and they had to put a pair
of underwear on a goat,
and make sure they didn’t
fall off.
“We’re trying to build
more than a rodeo,” said
Holsworth. There was a
silent auction, a gay art
show, entertainers and
a dance. For those who
wanted, there was even

People came from all over
to take part in the rodeo,
either as a spectator or a
competitor.
“The furthest I know
of is from Australia,”
said Holsworth. ESPN
was there as well, film-
ing the events and fol-
lowing the circuit. There
are 15 gay rodeos being
held in North America
this year, and the com-
petitors who were here
are part of the circuit. The
top five will be invited to
the finals, which will be
taking place sometime in
November. The rodeo was
also 100 per cent volun-
teer driven, with most of
the volunteers from Cal-
gary. The next gay rodeo
in Strathmore will be July
1 to 3, 2011.

“The BBQ looks like an engine and
most people don’t even realize it’s a
BBQ, they walk right by it, until you
point it out,” said Todd Blakney, a mem-
ber of the Strathmore Fun Runners club.
“It was made by a company down in

it and make some different ones (for
Times kidbits next year),” said Shawn Palendat, presi-
dent of Strathmore Fun Runners.

hundred left for the second one. The
tickets are selling for $2 each and 100
per cent of the proceeds will be donat-
ed to local charities.
“We’ve generally given a lump sum
to one group, but this year we want to
split it up,” said Blakney.
Another difference is they used to
do a burnout contest, which is when
a person spins their tires creating a lot
of smoke. This year, due to liability rea-
sons, the burnout contest has been cut
out. The show will be taking place rain
or shine, and Blakney said the average
is about 250 vehicles being shown. It’s
a free event for anyone who wants to
come down, but it’s a $10 cost for peo-
ple bringing their cars down to show
off.
“Anyone from anywhere can come
down. For those that want to come walk
around for a bit, have a beer and relax,
there are beer gardens,” said Palendat.
On Friday the group will be meeting
at A&W for a meet and greet, then they
will cruise around Strathmore before
heading to the Lodge to visit the elderly
for a bit, and then off to Muscle Mo-
tors to show off the shop. Saturday will
be full of activities for kids and adults,
there will be games, and even a Hot
Wheels race track set up for the kids.
An all girl band will be playing; there
will be the raffle, a 50/50 draw and door
prizes. There will also be a chassis dy-
namometer, which basically measures
the power of a vehicle. Another treat
this year is there will be six special cars
at the show. There will be a 2010 Dodge
Challenger, ’10 Ford Mustang and a ’10
Chevrolet Camaro. The other three
cars will be the same three brands and
names but the 1960’s versions, so car
enthusiasts can compare what a differ-
ence 40 years has made.

in just a few weeks, and
another Strathmore teen
will be heading off to
compete. Logan Crooks,
13, was picked for base-
ball as a pitcher for his
zones team. Logan has
been playing ball for
eight years, and his dad,
Jim, has been his coach
for most, if not all, of
those eight years.
“He has a real passion
for the game, he just
loves to play ball, it’s all
he does at home,” said
Jim.
“Its good for him too,
you have to go to ID
Camps and compete for
a position.”
Each athlete had to
participate in at least one
AABC Talent ID Camp
before they would be
considered for the Sum-
mer Games. The first Al-
berta Sumer Games with
zone participation was
held in 1974, and began
as a provincial govern-
ment initiative allowing
all Albertans to partici-
pate in amateur sport.
Every year the games are
hosted in a different lo-
cation around Alberta,.
This year it will be at
Peace River.
Currently Logan is on
the Strathmore Bantam
Reds AA and he hopes to
one-day play ball profes-
sionally.
“I want to try to get
into Berkley,” said Lo-
gan. He is already look-
ing ahead to the future
and plans to apply for a
scholarship to Berkley.

Minor soccer gets new professional sized fields

Members of the Strathmore Minor Soc-
cer Federation, or any soccer players re-
ally, will have a new field to look for-
ward to in the new season. For three
years, the talk of building two new
full sized soccer fields has been in the
works. The new fields will be located
behind Walmart, just east of the Ranch
Estates. As part of the next development
stage there will also be a road which di-
vides the fields.
“We had some land originally at the
northwest corner of the agricultural so-
ciety, that they were going to lease to us
to develop and that sort of fell through.
Then last October, the town and de-
velopers working in that area (behind
Walmart) were required to have a per-
centage of the property green space,
and someone on council knew we were
looking for it and offered it to us and
we’ve just been kind of working through
things since then,” said Mark Shorhen,
president of Strathmore Minor Soccer.
The fields will be roughly 80 yards by
100 yards, and they can split into four
fields for the younger teams. Fundrais-
ing for the field has been an ongoing
thing, Shorhen said. They received a
grant for $100,000, but the final costs
may be double that amount.
Full irrigation will be put into the field,
and Eagle Lake Sod is donating enough
sod for one full field.
“They (the town) have given us about
a 90 day time frame to get everything
done, the irrigation and the sod, and by
the end of August the fields will be ready
to walk on, not to play on, but we’ll be
able to have the grand opening,” said
Shorhen. The new fields won’t eliminate
Parkwood because there are so many
teams, said Shorhen, but it will allevi-
ate having to play on poorly maintained
fields. Tenders for the project are to be
signed sometime in the next few days,
and there wont be a ground breaking
ceremony but there will be a big grand
opening when the fields are ready.

is gearing up for a tournament this weekend, and they want to make sure
they are in top shape. They have been having a bit of an off season and
are hoping for the chance to turn it around.
