InDecember2010,IattendedtheNCCcampatIITB.Itwasquiteagoodexperience,
whereinwewenttrekkinguptheSameerHill,madeatriptoINSVikrantandalsotoAksa
Beach.TheexplorationofBombayhadjustbegunforme.Duringthecampdaysandatthe
verybeginningofJanuary,weperfectedourLineFollower,enablingustobecometheonly
IITBfreshmenteamtoreachthetop50ofLoopRushatTechFest2011.Ialsotriedmy
handattheIndianSudokuChampionshipatTechFest,somethingthatIhadbeenhugely
fondofeversincetheystartpublishingtheminthenewspapers.Andtomysurpriseaswell
asjoy,IfinishedwinneramongstIITiansand3rdoverall,gettingmyselfatickettothe
Nationalfinals(whichIeventuallyditched:(...).

Speakingofacads,wehadacourseonrelativityandquantummechanics,topicsthatI Follow
waswellversedwithduetomyIPhOpreparations,buttheprof'sstyleofteachingandhis
proficiencyatdoubtclearancekeptmefrombunkingclasses.Then,wehadanexcellent
courseonfunctionalprogramming,whereIalsohappenedtobuildmyfirstmajorproject,a
QuantumComputerSimulatorinDrScheme,workingalongsideRevant(themostsincere BlogArchive
guyIhaveevermet)andAshwin.Then,asiftobuildasemblancetothefirstsem,I

Today,whenIfinallyhaveafreeweekend:),IlookbackonthetwoyearsthatIhavespent
inthisfantasticplacecalledIITBombay.Goingbacktosquareone,Ifondlyrememberthe
dayIenteredIITB,rightafterarrivingfromaweeklongtriptoCroatiafortheIPhO.Oneof
thefirstpersonsImetwasmyneighbour,Satwikwhocameandcongratulatedmeforthe
silver.ItwasonlylaterthatIrealisedthathetoowasanInternationalOlympiadguy.Oh,
thatwing!!!DareDevilswecalledit...Later,ImetourAIR1,theguyIhadbeendreamingof
trouncingeversincethedaytheJEEresultshadbeendeclared,notthatIdisregardedhim
oranythingbutforthesakeofsomehealthycompetition.Comingbacktothepoint,itwas
quiteeasyformetosettleinwithallthepaperworkhavingbeentakencareofbymy
parentsandwithsuchawonderfulroommateasAshwin,whomIhadknownwellforthe
pasttwoyears.

Asthedaysrolledby,Iwentthroughsomelongorientationswherethefocuswouldalways
beonoutshoutingtheotherhostel.Notbeingusedtosuchbehaviour,Iusuallydidn't
indulgeinallthe"H2ki*****"or"H4ki*****"butya,"H10humaarahai"didalwaysbringme
tothevergeofburstingoutmyvocalcords.Thelecturesallseemedprettygoodand

Alongsidethestudies,therewastheInSyncorientationwhereIhadtoplaytheroleofthe
femalepartner...(ohIITB,yunobringinmoregirls???)..Isowantedtoattendthesalsa
workshoplater..PROBLEM:bandikahaanselaoon...Iwasn'tverywellacquaintedwith
anyofthegirlshereandtheonlyonewhomIknewwellandwhocouldhavecometoIITB,
choseMITinstead...(whatfate!!!).Then,therewasTrackMania,theeventthatbroughtme
intotech.Ilearntsoldering,andalthoughitwastough,itwasfun.Iwouldsolder,thenwipe
off,thenagainsolder,commitmistakes,rectifythemanditwouldsortofgoonforever.I

mefromallthetroublesofgettingapinkslipforthemidsemIhadmissed.Hejusttoldme
"Ibelieveyou."TheendsemswentbyandItookatriptoMatheran,myfirstsightseeing
tripsinceCroatia.Whatagreat,cool,pollutionfreeplaceitwas.Ithoroughlyenjoyedthe
daythereandreturnedtofaceevengreatertimesofjoy.IliterallycrackedtheCS101
paper,finishingwith70.5/70intheendsemandontopofthecourse,fetchingmemyfirst
everAP.AndthentherewasMA105,whereIhad59/60inthelaterhalfwhichjustabout
madeupforthe13Ihadlostearlier.Iendedthefirstsemat9.88,atoptheCSE
departmentandmuchhigherthanthegoalof9to9.5Ihadsetformyselfinthebeginning

thatthesehighranksaremeantforborngeniuses.Butthatisfarfromthetruth.Inmy
caseatleast,Iwasbornanantigenius.So,itsmostlyaboutpractice,startingearly,using

ItwasonlyinclassVIthatIgotmyfirstgoatanationallevelsciencecompetition(the
NSO)andobtainedanAIR13.Then,inclassVII,IfinishedEastZonerunnerupinthe
IndiasChildGeniusquizconductedbySiddharthaBasu,missinganopportunitytomeet
Dr.A.P.J.AbdulKalambyjust0.2secondsinthebuzzerround.Ihaveneverlookedback
sincethen,alwayslearningfrommymistakesandpracticingendlesslyinordertoattain
thateverelusivestateofperfection.

Now,havingbuiltupasortofprologueletmecometothemajorissue:JEE.Thesethree
lettersseemtoweighsoheavilyonthemindsofsomanyyoungsters.Here,Iwillbe
basicallydiscussinghowtoplanoutyourpreparationssothatthisexamlooksabiteasier.
HavinginteractedwithlotsofstudentsfromalloverIndiathroughliveseminars,email,
socialnetworkingsites,etc.andmostimportantly,havingbeenthroughthatcrucialstage
myself,IamwellawareofthequestionsthatJEEaspirantshaveinmind.So,Iwillbe
goingthroughtherestofthisarticleinasortofyourquestionmyreplyformat.

Firstandforemost,thefirstquestionthatalwaysturnsupisWhatisthemantraof
success?Iwouldsayit'sutilizingeventhattinymomentforselfstudywhichyouare
givingtoponderingoverthisquestion.Accordingtome,itistimemanagementalongwith
someselfbelief.Everysinglemomentthatyouarewastinginsomenotsoimportant
activity,thousandsofothercompetitorsarestrivinghardtogetaheadofyou.So,you
simplycannotaffordtowastetime.Abitofrelaxationhereandthereaftersomecontinuous
studyisamust,butyoushouldbeabletocontainthatIhavehadenoughfeeling.

PeoplealsoaskmewhenexactlydidIstartmyJEEpreparations.Now,Iamnotveryclear
aboutthequestionitself.IstartedstudyingtheJEEsyllabustopicsinthemiddleofclass
X,butIhadstartedconcentratingonsciencemathsandstrengtheningmybasicsfrom
classVIitself.IhadjoinedaJEEdirectedcorrespondencecourseforthefirsttimeinclass
IXwhileIhadmyfirstmajorconfidenceboosterattheIndiasChildGeniusinclassVII.
So,itsbeenquitealongjourneywithabeginningwhichImyselfamunabletofigureout.
ThisthereforeturnsouttobeaquestionwhichIneitherunderstandnorhaveadefinite
answerfor.

Then,whydidIjoinFIITJEEandnotanyotherinstitute.Everystudenthashisown
capabilitiesandrequirements.Iknewthatgivensufficienttimeforselfstudy,Icould
understandconceptswellonmyownbutIneededsomegoodteachersfordoubt
clearance.ThatswhereFIITJEEcameintothepictureandtheyfilledthevoidextremely
well,betterthanIhadeverimagined.EnrolledintothePINNACLEprogram,Iusedtoget
theentireeveningsfreeasallclasseswouldbeoverby2:30pmintheschoolcampus
itself.So,IhadlotsoftimewithmeandIwouldsitdown,think,solve,practice,getmy
doubtsclearedthenextday,etc.

ThislastpointIjustmentioned:DoubtClearanceisonethingIhaveseenmissinginmost
aspirantsprioritylists.Asastudent,yououghttohavefaithinyourteachersandapproach
themwithyourdoubts.Ihaveseencolleagueswhoneverevenaskedtheirschoolteachers
anydoubts.Youneedtotrythemoutfirst,iftheyareunabletosatisfyyourquery,only
thenshouldyougotoexternaltuitions.Theyaretheteachersbecausetheyknowthings
betterthanyoudo.Manystudentsfeelthatagoodteacheristheonewhoexplainsthings
wellandsolvesquestionsontheboard.Iwouldsayagoodteacherisonewhoclearsyour
doubtswell.Thatsbecauseyoucandotheunderstandingandsolvingpartyourselftoobut
thoseinevitabledoubtshereandthererequireastrongtutor.

Comingtomynextpoint:TimeManagement,studentskeepfrettingaboutthissimple
concept.Ihaveseenstudentsinmycitywhospendeveningsperformingstuntsonbikes,
eatingoutwithfriends(mostlygirlfriends),watchingmovies,etc.andthenletoutacryon
theJEEday,Whydotheseguyssetsuchunsolvablepapers?Asyoucanverywellsee,
theyhaventbeentruetothemselvesandhencecantexpecttogetintoIITs,NITs,etc.in
placeofthosewhohaveburntthemidnightoil.Imyselfhavegiveneverythingtoitduring
those2yearsandamdefinitelyreapingrichrewards.ItsbettertoutilizepreJEEtimeand
thenenjoylifeinIITs(Imusttellyouitsabeautifulplacetobein)ratherthanwastingit
andregrettinglater.

Iwillgiveyouanexample.Allofusgetthis1.5to2monthgapaftertheclassXexams.
Insteadofvisitingplacesandenjoyingyourself,youcangiveaweekorsotorefreshing
yourselfandthengetbacktostudiesinordertogetagoodheadstart.Thiswillenableyou
tounderstandconceptsbetterwhentheyaretaughtinclass.Then,youcanalsoutilize
thosesmallintervalsduringchangeofclassestosolvesomequestions.Peoplearound
youwilllaughatyou,trytoderailyoufromthatrighttrackbutyouneedtoignorethem.In
theend,itdoesntevenmatter.Itriedsohard,Igotsofar.Theytriedtoderailmebut
inflictedlossesuponthemselvesonly.
ItsnotthatIgaveupeverythingformypreparations.Iusedtosolvesudokueveryday,
readthenewspaper,played(althoughrarely),didabitofsocialnetworkinginthelastfew
monthsbutIwasntobsessedwiththesethings.Iknewmygoalanditsimportanceinmy
life.Youjustneedtoprioritiseyourtimetable.

Returningtoacademics,ifyoupreparewellforJEE,youarealmostdonewithyourboard
examPCMsyllabusaswell.AndasIsaidearlier,ifyouchooseyourtuitionswisely,you
willalsobeabletofindampletimeforEnglishandthe5thsubject.Manystudentsgoto
particulartuitionsjustbecausetheirfriendshavejoineditorbecausetheyhaveheardlots
ofpeoplepraisingthatteacher.Thisisnttherightwaytodoso.Youneedtounderstand
yourownrequirementsandchooseaccordingly.Theremightbeateacherwhoisverygood
atmechanicsbutdoesntteachelectromagnetismwell.Youdontneedtocontinuegoingto
himjustbecauseyoufeelasenseofloyaltyandgratitudetowardshim.Itsyourlife,your
career,youhavetodecidekeepinginmindyourowngood.Thentrytogivemoretimeto
practicingquestionsofdifferentvarietiesandfromdifferentbooks.Iwouldntrecommend
readingthesameconceptagainandagainfromdifferentsources/teachersasitwould
simplybeawasteofyourprecioustime.Insteadgraspthatconceptfrom1or2booksand
thenmoveontopractice.

NowIfeelIshouldaddressthequestiononhowtostudyingeneral?Itsbettertofinish
topicsonebyone.Doing3or4topicsallatonetimewillmakeitquitedifficultforyouto
handleeverything.Twotopicsfromdifferentsubjectsisquiteokaybecauseifyoufeel
boredafterstudyingoneofthemfor56hrs.,youcanswitchtotheotheroneandthen
return.Trytopreparecompendiumsforeachtopicasitwillbehelpfulinthelaterstagesof
preparation.Ifyounoticesometrickinsomebook,noteitdownandreviseitlatersothat
yougetanideaofwhereitworksandhowtoapplyit.Suchtricksandoptionelimination
proveveryusefulinsavingtimeforthetougherquestions.

topicthatIfeltabittoughtohandle,butIfeelIwasfortunateenoughtohaveanothergreat

Nextcomestheissueofhowtoprepareforallotherexamsthatoccurroundtheclockin
these2years.IpersonallyfeelthatNSO,IMO,NSTSE,etc.,althoughconsideredeasyby
many,areverygoodexamstogetanestimateofwhereyoustandandofyourstrengths
andweaknesses.Anynationallevelexam,toughoreasy,iscompetitiveandaseasyfor
youasforsomeonesittinginanyotherpartofIndia.Thencomethephysics,chemistry,
mathsandastronomyolympiads.Themathsolympiadrequiresabitofextrapreparationon
topicslikenumbertheory,combinatorics,etc.Theotherthreeolympiadscanbecrackedif

youhaveKVPYinclassXIwhichhasnopredefinedsyllabus.Thepaperbasicallytests
yourmentalabilityandclarityofconcept.Youneedtohaveknowledgeoftopicsthatwillbe
coveredinclassXIthandabitoftheformulaeandlawsfromtheearlydaysofclassXIIth.
Theinterviewismeanttotestyourconfidenceandclarityofaiminlife.

IwouldbewritinganincompletearticleifIdidnttalkaboutwhattododuringthelastfew
monthsbeforeJEE.So,Isuggestyoushouldcompleteallyoursyllabusatleastbymid
Decemberandthenbeginwithrevisionofyourclassnotesandofthechapterwise
summariesyoumusthavecreatedinthetwoyears.Then,moveontopracticingquestion
papersof6hoursduration.Solvingquestionsfromindividualchaptersisquitedifferent
fromsolvingthemwhentheyareallthrowntogetheratyou.Itmighthappenthatyouare

timeandplanverywell.The14daygapbetweenlastboardexamandJEEshouldgointo
revisionandpracticeonly.Donottrytoread/learnsomethingnewinthatperiod,itwilljust
addtothepressure.

Anotherextremelyimportantquestionthatarisesis:Howtocopewiththepressure?I
wouldsay:Justkeeppracticing,sitdownforlotsofnationalleveltests,whenyouseethat
youareabletosolvequestionsandgettingsomegoodranks,youwillgainconfidenceand
itsthismuchrequiredselfconfidencethatwillhelpyousailthroughtheJEEday.Ifyouare
unabletogetthoseranks,lookatthemistakesyoucommitted,discussthemwithyour
teacher,trytocorrecttheminthenextpaper,getyourfundamentalscleared,anddedicate
moretimetothattopicwhereyouarepronetomistakes.Itmighttakesometimeforthat
changetoshowup,butitwillcertainlyhappenoveraperiodoftime.Youknow,thousands
ofpeople(andalmosteveryoneinKota)wishtoachieveatop100JEErankbutonlythose
fewwhohavestucktotheirbasics,whohavebeenregular,whohavepracticedalotand
hencebuiltuptheirspeedandaccuracywhoachieveit.Theresalwaysthiscompetition.

Higuys,

SeeingthenumberofpeopleseekingadviceonvariousJEErelatedissues,Idecidedto
startthisblog.HereIwillbetellingyouwhatallIdidoverthetwoyears200810.So,first
ofall,Ibelievedinmyself,neverwenttotuitionsandutilisedalmostallthetimeIhad.I
joinedFIITJEEPINNACLEprogrammeasitwouldsavemealotoftimeandallthe
classeswouldbeoverwithintheschoolcampusitself,sonohurryinghereandthereinthe
evening.
Then,Ialwaysapproachedmyteacherswithlotsofdoubts,beitmyCBSEteachersorthe
onesatFIITJEE.Neverhesitatetogetyourdoubtscleared.Ineverreliedontoomany
booksforthesameconcept.Thatwouldhavebeenawasteoftime,keepinginmindthe
hugesyllabusthatneededtobecovered.Givingtoomuchattentiontoonetopicmeans
deprivinganotherofthesame.
Ipractisedalot,joinedFIITJEE'saswellasBRILLIANT'sAITS.SoIusedtogetagood
ideaofhowmuchIwasscoringandwhereIstood.Thosetestsgavemeagoodestimate
ofmypotentialandwithit,alotofmuchrequiredselfconfidence.Igavealotoftimeto
revisionaftermakingnotesofallimportantconceptsfromindividualchapters.Herearethe
bookswhichIdidinmy2yearpreparation:

Physics:Irodov(mechanicsonly),HCVerma,Arihant(alltopics)
Chemistry:RCMukerjea,OPTandon,PaulaBruice
Mathematics:Arihant(alltopicsexceptalgebra),TMH(classXIthsyllabus)

Inaddition,IcompletedallpackagesofFIITJEEaswellasBRILLIANTandsolved
FIITJEE'sGMPandRTPF.Thelattertwoareverygoodforpracticeandrevisioninthelast
fewmonths.

Iusedtogivesometimetorecreationtoo,Iwouldreadthenewspaper,solvesudokueach
dayandmaybe,watchamovieeverymonth.

PeoplealsoaskmehowIpreparedforAIEEE,towhichIwouldreplythatJEEpreparations
automaticallycoverAIEEEsyllabusalso.Therearefewextratopicslikesemiconductors
whichcanbeeasilycoveredinthe2weekJEEAIEEEgap.
