PA Common Core Standards

Referenced from http://www.pdesas.org/ for PA State approved academic standards (Grade-specific Numbers & Descriptions)

CC.2.2.3.A.1: Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.

CC.2.2.3.A.3: Demonstrate multiplication and division fluency.

Objectives
Objectives correspond with PA State Common Core Standards listed above (SWBAT)

SWBAT create an array to connect to the word problems being described

SWBAT make connections on how addition and multiplication can be used to express the same information.
SWBAT simplify addition problems by producing them into multiplication problems to come up the same
number of objects.

Lesson Introduction: (10-15 min)

(Activate background knowledge & set purpose)

I will have the students bring their math textbooks to their regular table. I will ask them what they can
remember about an array. (How many numbers or objects can they find in an array? What can they tell me
about the numbers in the array.) Next I will have the girls open up to page 115 and I will read aloud the Solve
and Share. I will ask the student, What information are we asked to find? - The numbers of pictures on the
wall. What multiplication problem represents 3 rows with 6 pictures in each row? 3 x 6. How can you use
addition to find the product? I can add the number of pictures together in each row.

Activities/Procedures: (15-20 min)

Lesson Plans are conducive to student achievement and focus on PA State CC standards and objectives

Once both students have answered the questions I will have them turn the page and turn on the video. I will
have them watch the video on my computer and stop the lesson when guided by the program to say, Look at
the way the array for 3 x 6 was broken apart to help multiply. Why is it okay to break apart the array? The
number of items does not change. Next I will ask, How is breaking apart the array helpful? If you use arrays
for facts I already know to help find the total. Once the video is complete I will have them turn to page 117 in
their binders. I will read aloud the questions for a guided reading and work with them to help solve the
questions. If I notice they are having trouble with something or trying to solve the math equations I will ask

them to draw a picture to help them or continue to count using the information that is given in the question. We
will underline important information, if necessary.

Closing & Assessment: (5-10 min)

When each student has finished the guided questions I will have them complete the first side on their own and
assist, when necessary. When they finish answering the questions on the front they can move on to numbers 21,
23, and 25. I will read the questions aloud. If they finish all of their work they can move on to the circled
numbers for homework.
