Activity 3

Given any circle with radius 2 units.

This circle is NOT

drawn to scale. If you
would like to check
your answers you can
take the time to redraw
it according to scale.

1. What will the x- and y-co-ordinates be of points A and E?

2. Consider the right-angled triangle formed by constructing a perpendicular line from D to the
x-axis.

2.1 Calculate the y-co-ordinate of D (using your calculator if necessary).

2.2 Calculate the x-co-ordinate, leaving your answer in surd form.

3. Calculate the co-ordinates for B. If you think carefully you won't have to calculate anything.

4. Calculate (leaving your answer in surd form), the co-ordinates of C.

Hint: if you have an answer on your calculator and you square it,
you will have the number it would be under the square root sign.
e.g. 3 = (3)2 = 9

5. What pattern do you notice? (Rewrite all your answers onto the circle in surd form.)
