CENCHRIS CONTORTRIX AS A HOMEOPATHIC REMEDY
INTRODUCTION
Study of homoeopathic remedies needs a good memory and it has

become increasingly useful to see remedies collated into groups or
families of substances that in their homeopathic medicinal form
show common characteristic.
These characteristics when seen in cases, many a times the remedies

prescribed are from plant or mineral kingdom leaving animal
kingdom bit aside.
We see that plant families and mineral groups are studied at a large
number compared to animal familiesand so when I see animal
kingdom, Ophidia group caught up my mind.
When most of us talks about snake remedy the first remedy comes
up in our mind is Lachesis and then Naja and/or Crotalus. Whereas
there are many remedies in Ophidia group which are neglected. One
of the neglected remedy is Cenchris contortrix. In the description of
this remedy it was written that this drug is similar to Lachesis.
Then some questions came in my mind like-if this remedy is

similar to Lachesis then how is it similar and if so, why is it not
prescribed more often?

To study from Homeopathic proving, other available literature and

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
We have seen in the profile of snake remedies a quality of the actual

family is often attributed to one snake, namely Lachesis, probably
the best proven snake remedy. This is the reason that most of the
symptoms seem to be similar.
In Kents Lecture of Homeopathic Materia Medica mental

symptoms such as absent mindedness, anxiety about death and
vivid, lascivious dreams predominates. Mentally Cenchris is
different from Lachesis, as the former is all about sexual abuse
whereas Lachesis is all about sexual organs. Also Cenchris is chilly
whereas Lachesis is thermally hot.
In Kents Lecture of Homoeopathic Materia Medica and Boerickes

Materia Medica, it is seen during proving that it has loss of memory

which is further qualified in Homoeopathic Recorder (1917 edition)

it is given that it is mental exhaustion which leads to inability in
recalling mental impression.
In Kents proving, Clarkes Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica

well as in Boerickes Materia Medica it is stated that there is
absentminded with dreamy state. Likewise, in Homoeopathic
Recorder it is mentioned that there is not only dreamy state but also
mind becomes blank.
Dreams of rape which was seen during proving has been confirmed
by many authors,and Dr. Vikas Sharma in his website
www.drhomeo.com also says that Cenchris has dreams of
committing rape whereas in The Spirit of Homeopathic Medicine
book by Dr. Didier Grandgeorge in the primitive scene it is given
that Cenchris dreams of witnessing a rape.
From the cases given in NATIONAL JOURNAL of

HOMOEOPATHY (NJH) it is seen that the majority of symptoms
are coming in mental, respiratory and female reproductive system.
Although during proving other systems are also shown symptoms

but in clinical prescription it is still to be discovered.
We also find this remedy in Kents repertory under disputes from

jealousy (Lachesis, Nux vomica).

This remedy is known among homeopaths for its similarity to

Lachesis with symptoms occurring on the right side instead of left.
Also respiratory system is characteristically explained in the form of

symptoms like Recurrent tendency to develop paranasal sinusitis &
allergic rhinitis.
Symptoms of alimentary system are very characteristic of Cenchris

such as sensation of bands around the abdomen, nausea > by ice,
loathing of food. Also Intolerance of tight clothing is mentioned by
Dr. Kent as well as Dr. J.H. Clarke in their respective Materia
Medica.
Snake group Introduction
A considerable part of Homoeopathic MateriaMedica consists of

medicines taken from animal kingdom. As the name implies, the
Ophidia group consists of medicines taken from snakes.
Ophidia comes under Class Reptilia, which comes under Phylum
Chordata, under metazoa. The other Classes in Phylum Chordates
includes Pisces, Amphibia, Aviens and Mammalia.

Living Pattern
Semi-aquatic
It is a shy snake,tries to hide away from strangers, will bite

only when disturbed
The species name is from Latin contortus meaning

twisted, referring to the pattern on the snake back.

Constituents: Cenchris venom is the modified saliva. The

Concentration
difficult or they just sit and stare into space.
- Sensation of intoxication in evening.
- The horror remains after horrible dreams.
- Thought sickening anxiety, all over the body, but most at

shall die!" This soon passed into profound sleep, whichwas

Eyes

Ears
- Itching of ears at night.

- Dry parched lips in evening, with fever that began at 3pm.
- Great burning of the face, worse at night and about 2pm, it
keeps growing hotter and redder until she goes to sleep
at10pm. Burning begins in left cheek and ear, spreads to
right cheek 6:30pm.
- Very small red pimples in little clusters, between the eyes,
on the upper lips and on the end of nose.
- Dr. J.H Clarke also mentions of bloated expression, face
sallow, burning face and blue circle around the eyes.
Mouth
- Dry mouth in evening.
- Profuse saliva, running out of mouth on pillow in sleep
- Metallic, coppery taste in mouth.
Throat
- Gagging from coughing, constantly hawking up thick,
tough, stringy mucus, difficult to raise.
- Throat full of mucus, thick and yellow, slightly tinged with
blood from posterior nares, in the morning on waking. Dr.

- Itching and soreness of the anus with hemorrhoids.
- Urging to stool, which passes away before the closet can
be reached.
- Unsuccessful urging to stool, strain until rectum feels as
though prolapsed, but have no stool morning.
- On waking in the morning, had to hasten to the closet; stool
watery, dark with a black sediment like coffee grounds;
stool intermits, have to sit a long time,passing small
quantities every minute or two.
- Stool gushing and frequent, watery, with dark sediment at
first without pain; after several hours great pain before
stool.
- Flatus at termination of stool. Painless and involuntary
stool when passing flatus.
- Stools profuse, each seems as if it would empty the bowel,
but soon full again.
- Sensation of intestines filled with water.
- Dr. J.H Clarke in his Practical Dictionary of Materia
Medica says that there is diarrhea early in the morning, on
waking and also gushing stool, frequent, watery at first,
without pain, and after several hours, great pain before the
motions.

- Loses her urine when coughing.
- Desire to urinate at night, just after getting in bed: must get
up and press a long time before a few drops pass.
- When doing mental work, frequent desire to urinate, pass

Male sexual organs

- Both Dr. Kent and Dr. J.H. Clarke talk about violent sexual
desire in males.
Female sexual organs

- Yellow leucorrhoea, never had any leucorrhea before.
- Sexual desire strong, in a widow who had long been free
from such sensations.
- Sharp, shooting pain in right ovary. Similar symptom is
also mentioned by Dr. J.H. Clarke in his Materia Medica.
- Herpetic eruption on labia majora.
- Laborlike pains in uterus during menses.
Respiration
- Slight hoarseness, worse at night

- Stops breathing unless she sits up and bends forward.

Heart and chest

- During the day, constriction about the neck, clothing
disturbed her, choking feeling.
- Throbbing under the scapula, dull aching in small of back.
- Transient aching feeling in sacrum
- Throbbing carotids when lying down

(lasting many days).
- Awoke at night with pain in region of left kidney, worse

lying on left side, better by turning on right side and

Extremities
- Hands vary, one minute hot and dry, then cold, then

- Hand chapped, hot & cold, get numb at times.
- Dull ache in metacarpal bone of thumb, in cushion of right
and left thumbs &in the left palm.
- Awakes with dull aching in four lesser toes of right foot,
acute pain when stepping or moving foot, gradually

Sleep and dreams

3) Male animals following her in the field to injure her.
4) Naked people; of wild animals pursuing her.

- Wakeful with horrible anxiety and feeling that she must

die,wakeful until 3am.
- Tongue dry, saliva running upon pillow during sleep.

Chill, fever and perspiration

- Chill at 3pm, icy cold hands and feet.

- The body feels flushed, but the contact of cold things is
disagreeable, causing chills.
- Inclined to be chilly all day and more so at night, must
keep wrapped warmly, even when feeling feverish

CASE STUDY
CASE 1
This is a 28 year old female complaining of no motivation (3). She

cant really seem to change her life even though she wants to
because she cant get started. Most of that revolves around a
difficulty focusing (3). She doesnt really know what she wants. She
has difficulty on a day to day basis in keeping focused and getting
things done.
She has a profound depression (3), which dates from her teenage
years. It occurs every couple of months. At these times she has
intense weeping (3) and can be suicidal (3). But even during the rest
of the month there is a feeling of hopelessness (3), that nothing will
ever work out and that something terrible is going to happen in her
life (3). It makes her quite fearful for her day to day survival with a
lot of the fears being based around money and the lack of it. Each
day she is very anxious about her health and about whether she will

survive due to the crises which constantly occur and drain her
financially. She never seems to be able to get ahead since something
happens each time she gets ahead to wipe her out financially.
Im a pessimist. You have to expect the worst. Something will

come and take it away from me. Im very vigilant. I go to bed with
my clothes on. Im afraid something will happen to me. Im sad.
There is nothing to live for; nothing to look forward to.
She has extremely low self-confidence (3). Even though she is quite
attractive she sees herself as unattractive, unable to compete with
other women.
I feel like I let my family down. I just couldnt be the way they
wanted me to be. I need a lot of recognition. I want people to like
me but I dont make the effort to initiate it. She is very critical of
herself (3), of how she walks, talks and looks.
She finds that she is bossy (3), like her mom. She is irritable and
bitchy (3) and can get into arguments with her husband that can
lead to out and out physical battles, with verbal aggression and can
even lead to striking and hitting (3). Shes aggravated she cant fix

things on her own. She can be vindictive and spiteful (3). She can
also be extremely weepy over nothing.
If someone says something to me, Ill cry. I feel ready to explode.
She didnt get along well with her husband who was very passive
and let her do all the work and planning. She wouldnt leave him
because she has an intense fear of being alone (3).
Ive been hurt a lot and just cant think about being alone and on
my own. She eventually did leave, had a series of quick
relationships, and then got into a relationship with a man who is
physically abusive to her.
It is important for me to feel needed. I took care of my mom who

died of cirrhosis. Im afraid I am so nitpicky that my husband will
leave me or Ill push him too far and hell leave. I like to look
different so Im the center of attention. Im fussy and mothering but
carefully push people away.

People say Im too confident, that Im stuck-up and snotty. I stand

back with crossed arms and look around the room and watch people.
Im nosy. I see whos looking at me.
Basically, I just dont trust people (3). My parents were alcoholic

extremely jealous (3); not of them looking at other women, but more
of being left out, of people talking about me. What are they saying
about me?
Physically she has palpitations (3). They can occur any time. It
makes her very afraid that she has some horrible disease. They are
worse when she lies down to go to bed. At one point she was on
Inderal for them.
They give me a sharp pain like someone sticking a knife in my

chest and they take my breath away. I have them daily and they last
for about 5 minutes. I cant control them. Im wondering if Ill die
from them.

I have a low sex drive (2). Im a disappointment to my husband. He

might leave.
I used to get hives (2) from age 9 14. Theyd come on the back of
my neck, back and chest. Id scratch them a lot, since they were so
itchy. They made me feel so ugly. They were humiliating. They
made me less self-confident. I couldnt control them or make them
go away.
I have severe arthritis of the knees and back (2). The knees swell
above the kneecaps. It is a sharp pain when going up stairs. There is
a stiffness of the knees. I have spinal bifida and scoliosis. I can get
spasms of the back (3) and sciatica, which is a prickling pain down
both legs. I get an ache and a pressure in my back, like an elephant
standing on it. There is also some twitching of the muscles of the
back. The arthritis bothers me every day. My muscles feel tight (3).
There is also tightness of chest (2). I get another type of pain in my
knees which make them feel like they are going to explode (3).
I have severe headaches (3) in back of my neck and head. The head
feels like it is in a vice grip. I have to go lie down and rest in a dark
room with no noises. These are worse with motion of her head.
They occur mainly around menses (3). The headaches are of two

types. The first is a constricting type mentioned above. The second

is a feeling like the head is going to explode (3).
She has severe menstrual cramps (3). They are debilitating. She has
to go lie down (3). They occur on the second day of the bleeding.
There are lots of clots with dark red blood, associated with nausea.
My sleep is poor. My mind is racing. Did I do this right? Is my

husband cheating on me?
She is chilly, has low energy of three to four on a scale of one to ten,
and craves cheese and milk, which upset her stomach. She has
aversion and aggravation from eggs.
Remedies given: Arsenicum album, Lachesis, Ignatia, Platina,

Hyoscyamus, and Anacardium.
Most relief was with Lachesis. The emotional states were

ameliorated by 50-60% with some symptoms even going away, but
the physical complaints got worse. Then she began to develop a
series of bronchitis-like symptoms with sneezing, fevers, cough, and
muscle aches all the time. She felt completely fatigued and burned

out. The joint pains got so severe that she was crying from the pain.
I was constantly giving her prescriptions for Tylenol (3).
Lets look at the analysis of the case.
The segments broke down like this:

I chose the following rubrics, which I combined to give the fullest

repertorization possible. Each of the combined rubrics represents the

When I repertorized these segments, 22 remedies came up in all 6

segments. 11 small remedies or nosodes came up in 5 segments.
So in September 1998 I gave her Cenchris 200C, based on the above

repertorization and everything got better. All the emotional problems
went away. The headaches and menstrual cramps stopped. The
arthritis went away. The palpitations had gone away with
the Lachesis. The muscle aches all went away. I repeated
the Cenchris 200C once in June 99. She was asymptomatic after
that except for mild occasional headaches and occasional mild

menstrual cramps, but nothing like the debilitating headaches and

menstrual cramps of the past.
Cenchris is a remedy in between Lachesis and Hyosyamus. It is as

though Cenchris is stuck in a constant PMS state and has a lack of
logic. The suspiciousness makes them angry. The mate did the
wrong thing, they drove him away and then they are alone. In a
woman who has fear of being alone and treats her husband badly,
consider Cenchris.

Discussion:
Cenchris remedy was selected based on these symptoms like:-
1.Suspicious / Jealous;
2. Arguing/irritability/nastiness; (If person explodes quickly it is
more likely Cenchris rather than Lachesis who tries to control
themselves).

3. Fear of death, of night, of exposure; In Lachesis it happens as

they are falling asleep. For Cenchris, there is just a feeling that
something is going to happen to them. Fear of death at night.
4. Alone, Forsaken.
In the above case we learn new clinical symptom of Cenchris such

as forsaken feeling which did not appear in the initial proving.
Also we see similarities between Lachesis and Cenchris in the given
case and learn the differentiating points between them.
In the given case, even though Lachesis was initially indicated, it
was Cenchris which resulted in complete cure of the patient thus
asserting that Cenchris can effectively treat cases if it matches the
totality.

CASE 2
Mrs. H, tall, frail.
Dec. 6, 1887. After being married for three years, complained of a

pain in the right ovarian region, like an ulcer, with a thrusting in
pain; that she cannot move her leg two days before menstruation.
Flow black, dirty discharge, followed a few days later with
coagulated blood; later leucorrhoea of large brown and yellow
lumps. Also she had a chill a month ago, with sore throat and
retching. Under the use of Apis and Sepia, high and highest
potencies, she considered herself well by January 4, 1888. But the
trouble came back in form of cramps in the right ovary. Apis high
did good service again, but did not cure.
Dec. 30, 1889. The menses had come two days earlier. First day,
bright red, then dark, lasting four days; not much. After it, pain in
the right ovary, like a jumping toothache, for a day. The size of the
painful spot had tapered down from three or four inches in diameter
to about that of a fingertip. Cenchris cm was given.
Jan. 13, 1890. Had for the first time in her life a normal
menstruation. There was only a slight intimation of pain in the right
ovary. She feels good everywhere, and has gained.

The ovarian trouble came probably from injecting cold water

immediately after coitus, which the ignorant young thing did,
according to the advice of her mother-in-law, who thought her unfit
to bear children.

Discussion:-
As per this case the patient complained of severe pain with soreness
in the Right ovary region initially she had sore throat followed with
chill in 3pm with night aggravation this are the symptoms which are
markedly seen in this remedy previously this patient was treated by
Apis due to the symptom of sore throat with chill but the patient
came up with soreness and severe pain in the right ovarian region
she was better with highest potency of Apis but she did not get
completely cured after Cenchris 45 she was not better for 2 days but
then the pain started reducing with marked improvement in overall
health of the patient. We also learnt a new clinical symptom of
Cenchris which was retching with cough.

She complains of recurrent bouts of breathlessness since the last 14
years. The attacks were much more severe earlier but in the last 8yrs
the severity is about 50% less. Since then she has not been
improving further.
She suffers from frequent attacks. Every time she gets an attack it
starts with cold and cough to start with and then breathlessness in
the next 24 hrs.
She is unable to lie down with the attack. She feels cold along with
the breathlessness,but at the same time wants fan. She gets a lot of
eructation along with the breathlessness.
During the attack she takes Asthalin inhaler 4-5 times a day and
steroid inhaler 2 times a day.
Associated complaints:
1. She complains of aches and pain in different parts of the body.

2. She has been suffering from fever one year back. It has lasted for

difficulty in breathing she is unable to eat comfortably.

Thirst:-Takes about 3-4 liters in a day. She usually prefers to have
water at room temp. Avoids taking cold water as she feels that it
might precipitate the attack though it does not.
Food / drinks / </> : At times if she has a lot of spicy food it leads to
mild retrosternal burning which settles down if she has a glass of
cold milk.
Stools: - 1-2 times a day,well formed. No episode of bleeding,
infection in the past.

Maharashtra.
Her father is a farmer by profession (not very well financially)
She is illiterate and her husband is an advocate.

parents were unable to pay that amount and so had decided to pay it
off by giving the returns of their cotton crop of the year. Due to the
failure of the crop that year the father was unable to pay the dowry

Considering the selected symptoms other remedy that came up were
Sepia and Lachesis on repertorisation it was seen that Sepia is a
remedy with marked indifference towards loved one. In Sepia A/F is
due to grief, disappointment in love but in this case A/F is from
fright which is markedly seen in Cenchris. Lachesis also has A/F
fright, anger but the difference is Lachesis is thermally hot whereas
Cenchris is knows as chilly Lachesis.
Lachesis has nightly delusion of fire whereas Cenchris has vivacious
lasicivous and dreams of being raped Cenchris has dreams of snakes
but Lachesis has fear of snake complaints aggravates after taking
cold in Cenchris.
Also we learn new clinical traits and symptoms of Cenchris in the
above case such as passionate and vivacious in mental symptoms
and desires sweets in physical generals which did not appear in the
initial proving of Cenchris.

As this remedy is not repeatedly proved on large scale as compared

to Lachesis, that is why there is limited amount of data present. This
has being the prime reason in missing out the prescriptions and
hence less number of cases. And so it is seen that only in some
systems the symptoms are marked.

symptoms/traits can help in differentiating the remedy and

entered for repertorization gives Lachesis as first choice remedy
because there are similar traits. From various clinical findings and
further differentiating the symptoms, Cenchris traits are seen and
when this remedy is prescribed, there are cures that had taken place
thus confirming the symptoms.
The cases given above mentions diagnosis like Asthma, ovarian

cysts and also deep rooted mental disturbance. These are very
different diseases affecting a person at different planes of life, but
Cenchris is helpful in curing them all showing its curative power
and also showing that there are curing taking place using this
remedy which was not seen till now.
