1. Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency the artifact represents.
Artifacts were collected from a graduate assignment focused on curriculum development. This
artifact represents the development of school counseling core curriculum, using a variety of
technologies to deliver content, in order to help students learn the importance of post-secondary
education.

2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies
which fall under this standard?

The artifact illustrates developmentally appropriate lessons that align with standards outlined
within the ASCA national model. It shows my ability to develop content surrounding a specific
content area, using educational material to meet the needs of all students, and to help assess a
students developmental readiness for learning. The curriculum provides a collection of
structured lessons that include desired outcomes that align with grade level national standards to
ensure it is developmentally appropriate. The artifact contains educational material that is
supported with tools and materials that are reliable and will engage students. Lessons and content
are also consistent with national and state standards and will provide rigorous programs that
focus on career readiness and occupational exploration. It provides a broad range of
supplemental material to differentiate and assess content mastery.

3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your
personal goal and your growth as a professional school counselor?

Developing this curriculum helped me understand the need for curriculum that is
developmentally appropriate and uniquely designed to provide content that is rigorous and
enjoyable. It requires one to take a systematic approach to the process of developing a unit and
implementing it within a school. A lot of time was spent on developing content that closely
aligns with the expected learning objectives and educational standards. Curriculum should be
student oriented and be developed to best meet their needs. It should provide instructional
activities that accommodate various learning styles. There are times where curriculum can
become outdated due to societal changes. School counselors have a duty to provide students with
the most up to date content they can through curriculum development. Thus, by creating
educationally appropriate materials, they can help provide answers and solutions for real life
problems, while providing students with the necessary skills to be successful adults.

4. What are your plans for additional growth or improvement in this area?

My growth and improvements in this area will focus on better understanding instructional
approaches and teaching strategies to create quality curriculum that is engaging and student
focused. Understanding how to format lessons, ask questions, and incorporate technology will
provide a foundation to create a successful and rigorous curriculum. Thus, I can enhance my
students education through a better understanding of instructional strategies tied to curriculum
development and learning styles.
