1.0 Introduction

During the short semester, an internship program was conducted by students with third
party companies outside of the university. The internship program was conducted aiming to
introduce us students to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in
architectural/ construction practices. Another purpose of this is to facilitate the involvement
of us in professional attachments to architectural practices to develop an understanding of
the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation as applied to
architecture drawings, especially Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to
processes of authority submission for various drawings from an architecture practice and
ranges of contract documentation produced to support these drawings. Generally being able
to experience the real working life of an Architect and how different the procedures are
when compared to what we conduct in the studio. Besides that, also learn about the
consequences, responsibility and how the smallest amount of error can cause many issues
to different people. Hence gaining valuable information and experience from this 8 week
internship program has greatly benefitted me and surely able to help me in my final year of
architecture studies.

As it was the first time experiencing the working life of an architect and a draftsman. I have
personally learnt many things in the form of projects alongside my fellow colleagues. It
became evident that practicality is insufficient, such as specific detailing of building systems
and the amount of skill required to be truly influential and successful in this field was not
easy,

During the first week in the company till the last, I was given a variety of tasks to complete.
Among them mostly are design proposals for condominiums, terrace, and semi-d houses,
where presentation drawings and 3D visuals were to be submitted to the client before
deadline. And in the process, I have greatly sharpened my skills in 3D Visualisation, learning
how to design spaces and layouts of housing with no specific user, understanding what the
market prefers and how decisions can cause the final product to lose market value. Besides
that, understanding costs constraints and how unnecessary details can be avoided to greatly
reduce building cost depending on scale of the project whether it be a low cost budget
condominium or a high cost condominium. This is also where Ive had first time experience
on the different procedures from design to submission until the end, along with various
laws stated in the Building by-laws, and its implementation on high rise condominiums and
also up to 3 storey housings such as setback lines, ventilation requirements, the various fire
safety requirements and more.

A good example would be the Tiger Syngery Condominium project also being a part of
Perumahan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (PR1MA) which is a low cost, budget condominium. The

2
issue of this project was to create good architecture while minimizing cost as much as
possible. The whole proposal and design period in the office lasted for 1.5 weeks, where
drawing plans, elevations sections were submitted before the deadline. It was the very first
time where I had to design a 17 storey high building with a set minimum number of units and
minimum amount of parking spaces, amenities etc. How to position everything to fit the
minimum requirement, and at the same time reduce space wastage. Another project was a
high-class condominium situated at Bangsar where the site was not just sitting on a slope
but also with an irregular shape of a pie. The issues stand where the units were to have
curved walls along with the facade of the condominium to minimize wastage of space.
Although facing small difficulties, the project was enjoyed as it was a high-class
condominium, cost became less of a concern allowing me to fully explore different designs
without constraints. Lastly, housings such as terrace, semi-ds and bungalow projects were
done. As easy as it sounds, there was a struggle in this project probably due to the lack of
knowledge of market needs and what client developers want. However, my supervisor has
guided me through, showing me how the building design and how that designs core
attraction is marketed can greatly influence buyers perspective along with the price tag of
the housing itself. And along that, reducing unnecessary costly details while still maintaining
the beauty of the house and that the best designs were the designs that were not only
visually stunning but also cheaper than expected.

Lastly, projects including working drawings, submission drawings, small designs were
conducted as well, and attending site meetings, and preparation of meeting minutes.
Working in the office alongside my colleagues allowed me to observe their management of
time and how hectic it is when working close to the deadline of the submission, which is why
time should be utilized and working smart is important. Besides that, the importance of the
role as an Architect, leading the entire team of engineers, contractors, workers to ensure
that the building is successfully built without delay. And lastly, how a project is carried out,
how to meet a clients demands and also the flow of projects, witnessing the amount of
drawings, documentations, authorities, meetings and etc.

The company I have joined is Ai Design Concept, a small office at Old Klang Road, Jalan
Othman, and log sheet signed by supervising Architect Yap Tuck Seng, LAM certification A/Y
86.

The upcoming pages include most of the major projects I have done and am involved in.

2.0 Projects
2.1 Daiman Vista Terrace & Semi-D

A land developed by Daiman Vista Sdn Bhd required a design for 10 lots of single storey
Semi-D and 20 single storey terrace lots. Drawing 1 shown in the following page is the site
plan with the proposed lots with proposed layout plans of individual lots shown in Drawings
2 and 3. After getting first hand approval by the supervisor, we move into building the 3D
model and designing the facade of the building. Which later on, would be rendered for
presentation purposes towards the client.

As mentioned before, several issues occurred during the design process of the facade and
overall look of the building which concerned building cost and etc. Besides that, since being
a single storey housing, rooms are packed and some without ventilation, which caused
issues and several discussions to provide ventilation to the spaces while maintaining low
cost with a grand feeling to the interior. Below shows visual renderings of the completed
works. Several different fencing designs were also proposed for the clients approval and
picking.

After that, submission drawings and bomba submissions including elevations, sections,
plans were produced which involved me and my colleagues. In the beginning, work pace was
slow as I wasnt familiarised with the companys working style and flow, which caused me to
make several errors not fitting to their style. However, the style was adapted quickly and
thing proceeded smoothly. In this project, Ive learnt about the procedures or process
between design proposals between the Architect and the client. Besides that, first time
experience handling with cost and how to decrease it as much as possible.

2.2 Tiger Synergy Condominium

The second project involved designing a low-cost condominium or also known as

Perumahan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (PR1MA). The condominium consisting of 17 floors
accomodating 286 units was to be constructed on 4.5 ekars of land fully equipped with car
park and recreational zones. The issues faced in this project were always cost related, as
this is a PR1MA condo, the client wanted it to be as cheap as possible. Hence causing the
proposed design to be rather simple without unnecessary details. Other things that Ive
learnt was how to reduce costs in a design, whereas walls, corridor slabs can be shared
among units as much as possible.

The client required a proposal consisting of plans, elevations, cross sections, unit plans, and
land usage calculations. In which was completed in a period of 2 weeks. The idea proposed
for this project was to create a large green open space for its users. Which is located one
level above the parking podium floors. Besides that, having the units be as separated as
possible, to allow light penetrate from more directions besides being from 1 side. Which
results in a concept of Semi-Ds in the sky.

Besides the design process, laws in the Building by-law were also took into consideration.
As this is the first time designing a high rise building, different laws were introduced to me
primarily being fire safety laws which take up almost 70% of the Building by-law. In which to
ease my design process. my company had already prepared an Architect Design &
Technical Checklist to make sure Ive fulfilled all requirements within the Building by-laws.

Completed works are shown in the following pages.

2.3 Bangsar Condominium

A high-class condominium project situated on the hill side of Bangsar with an irregular
shaped site plan. This was already an ongoing project when i joined the company, hence all
designs had already been finalised. However I was also briefed on the project and its
difficulties by the Supervisor. My involvement in this project was preparing submission plan
drawings only. Through this short project, Ive learnt about proper submission drawings and
techniques for high rise buildings and the amount of drawings required.

The following page shows the few plans which I was involved in completing.

2.4 Kenny Bungalow

Kennys Bungalow was a short project in which I had to re-design the bungalows rear
facade due to the clients disagreements to the previous proposed design. Which this is
where elements are applied and used to beautify a plain facade. How the combination of
colours can affect the outcome. Below shows the final renderings.

2.5 Dato Seow Bungalow

Moving onto the second bungalow project, This is a project on a 4 storey bungalow designed
for Dato Seow and his family. Special arrangements on the entire house was already
completed since last year and I was required to design the entirety of the facade. And due to
the large scale of the house, many elements were introduced to avoid a plain facade. Below
shows the final renderings.

2.6 Sastama Semi-D

This project required me to propose a design for 4 triple storey Semi-Ds on an existing lot in
Lorong Raja Haji Othman Through the design process, many were shot down by my
supervisor, which later I started studying developer brochures, looking at how other
companies market their houses and what makes it stand out from the rest. Besides that, Ive
also learnt about water tank placements, space requirements, standard ceiling heights, roof
design costs, etc. And which after 2 weeks, the final proposal presentation was produced.
This was one of the most enjoyable projects through the course of this internship as I could
design without much cost restraints. The final presentation is shown in the following pages.

2.8 IBS Factory

Already an ongoing project, 3 industrial building systems factory situated in Johor. I was
involved in producing submission drawings in this project as well as designing a small
portion of it. Among 3 factories, I was only involved in 1, drawings shown in following pages.
Besides that, I was also assigned to design a shading device on the building, with full
renderings to propose to the client.

3.1 Other Projects

Through the process of the internship, I have attended a total of 2 site meetings of the same
project which is a medium to low cost condominium located at Bukit Sungai Long developed
by Kihuat Sdn Bhd. Through this site meeting, I was tasked to take notes in order to prepare
the next meetings meeting minutes, which will be shown in the following pages. Besides
that, I was also exposed to various things listed in the progress report during the meeting.
These are such as financial statement claims, site organizations, concrete cube test reports,
material sample submissions, and shop drawing submissions. In my opinion, this exposure
was one of the most beneficial, as I could experience the communication, work procedures
between an architect and engineers, contractors, etc. Besides that, the importance of details
in meeting minutes, whereas the meeting minutes can act as proof to everyone he or she
says in the previous meeting.

3.2 Permit Application

There was also involvement in of permit application while submitting the submission
drawings for approval. As I was new to this, my colleagues have taught and guided me
through the process of preparation. The following page shows two of the many applications
sent.

4.0 Conclusion

In conclusion, this internship programme has given me lots of exposure to the architecture
field and what its like to work as an architect, the challenges I may face and ways to solve
them. It is truly a valuable experience, and although the practicum only lasted for 2 months,
it had definitely given me a positive understanding on how the industry works and what i
should expect when I enter the field in the future.
