Resolution adopted by Alijaeh Go and for the Global Community


1/1 The Revitalisation and Preservation of Endangered Languages

The Global Community and I, Alijaeh Go,

Referring to the UNESCO Atlas of the worlds languages in danger, which raises
awareness on language endangerment and the need to safe guard the worlds linguistic
diversity,

Expressing gratitude to the UNESCO Endangered Languages programme for providing


policy advice, technical expertise and a platform for exchanges and transfer of skills,

Emphasizing that languages are a vital part of local ecologies that must be supported if a
healthy biodiversity is to be sustained,

Alarmed by the amount of languages being endangered and the speed rate of languages
becoming extinct.

1. Emphasizes upon collection of data on endangered and indigenous languages:


a. Encour nations to use standardised identification tools to aid in focusing upon
the severity of the situation for each language within its sovereignty;
b. Once assessing the situation, the government should work with the community
accordingly;

2. Further calls upon the diligent fieldwork as an essential part in documenting


endangered languages:
a. the technological innovation of the 20th century has opened many channels to
record languages in better quality and mediums;
b. Seeking into use written documents to preserve information about the native
language and literature;
c. copied the materials onto modern sound carriers and made selected parts
accessible on the internet;

3. Requests laws to be enforced relating to teaching future generations in schools about


indigenous languages to increase the number of active speakers of endangered
languages:
a. vocabulary and courses should be made available online for a number of
endangered languages.
b. encouraging linguistic diversity at all levels of education and fostering the
learning of several languages, especially the mother tongue, from the youngest
age;
c. incorporating traditional pedagogies into the education process with a view to
preserving:
i. making full use of culturally appropriate methods of communication
and transmission of knowledge;
d. creating a creative collaboration between community members and linguists to
develop a writing system and introduce formal instruction in the language;
e. provide incentives to the younger generations on cascading the wisdom down;

4. Further requests more revitalization campaigns by promotion of awareness across the


world by:
a. advertising schemes to increase knowledge of indigenous languages;
b. using developing technologies to promote usage native languages through, but
not limited to, apps, radio and podcasts;
c. promoting intercultural dialogue through a comprehensive chat system
between the participants:
i. a system where every day the participant will encounter at least a new
culture;
d. sustaining the linguistic diversity of humanity and giving support to
expression, creation, and dissemination of the greatest possible number of
languages;
5. Emphasizes upon the enforcement of the rights for the minority groups on their
language preservation :
a. these languages would be maintained and sufficient support would be given to
protect them from outsiders who can ultimately affect the number of speakers
of a language;
b. reiterates that when speakers , linguists, language planners and policy makers
work together, endangered languages may be brought back to prominence:
i. increasing the language's prestige within the dominant community;
c. emphasizing on the equitable distribution of resources for these minority
groups to sustain themselves;
d. increase their legitimate power in the eyes of the dominant community;
e. implementing their place and position in the education system;

6. Endorses services such as policy advice, technical expertise and training for the
communities initiating their linguistic preservation programmes.
