ARC 2625 Internship Report

Name: Tang Wei Xin

Student ID: 0322731
Company: CF de. Studio
Duration: 4 January 2017 to 2 March 2017

On the first week I started my internship, I received a new project, which is a competition to recruit
ideas for a new community at Gelang Patah, Johor and I was assigned to join the design team, helped
in generating ideas of a basic layout for the site. The subsequent days, me and the consultants sat
down together and discussed about the design and concept, aiming to settle down the design within
one week. Even my ideas for the main building, the sales gallery were not accepted, and we were not
able to come out with the design within that week, I was still inspired and satisfied to have an
understanding from the consultant about why my ideas may not work in a real project, and how the
design process goes for a commissioned company. We spent two more days in finalizing the overall
design, and started to produce the presentation material afterwards, I had made out the model of
the shop lots which were my design and combined them with the rest parts. Rendering tasks were
then distributed among the team and we were rushing for the submission onwards, which was then
making us to stay on Saturday and Sunday in the office, to collect the materials for the boards. At
last, I was asked to compile the materials, and doing the boards.

Following days, we received instruction from the client to submit the following documents for the
current constructing project, Home tree Residences in Kota Kemuning, Selangor, I was able to apply
the knowledge from Measured Drawings module and Building Services I module to complete the
task of preparing the sanitary diagram and window schedule for the bungalows. Practices in these
small tasks, engaging myself in learning deeper and more understanding towards the practical
dimensions for the sanitary system and producing a diagram with more complete information
compare to my module project. Through the rules of the system, I had a chance to think and reflect
the pros and cons of an existing plan, in a more mature way.

Window schedule is considered an easy task when comparing to the other subjects. While it still
helped me to master the differences and varieties of doors and windows, which are really helpful in
my further practice for designing the openings in the project. And through the details studying, I
grabbed the chance to enquire our technical consultant with, how the dimension of the openings
work, and how to manage the openings to achieve a balance between practical and creative. From
his answers and explaining, I am now able to design those openings while still consider the cost
efficiency and cultural friendly issues.

I was practicing in a small firm, including me, there is a total of seven people in the office. And this is
my prior reason to choose this firm because I know it is kind of hard to experience every tasks for an
architect within these two months, and what I really want to learn is the working flow, experience
and aware of different local authorities. Here comes to one of my favorite part, awareness of local
authorities. I was given different forms from the local authorities and requested to fill the form. For
the contract part, I was able to find out the information of contractor, architects, and engineers by
studying through the company database, even if it took me certain time to complete that task.
However, I made mistakes in calculating the commission since I misunderstood the instructions in
Bahasa Malaysia, and not familiar with the calculating methods, I thus reflected myself in this section
and learnt from the mistakes. And one of my college had to help me in this part because we did not
have luxury time for me to try until succeed, I was not satisfied for my performance in this task. But
after the mistakes, I could understand the commission given to the architect and how it is calculated.
Definitely a good lesson.

From preparing SPA for the current project, that was my first time managing such a huge amount of
documents. At first, me and two of my colleges were in-charge-of the preparation of SPA, from the
arrangement of the documents, to locating the different units to different positions, and lastly,
sending to the clients and having a short meeting to understand their complaints. From my colleges,
it is normal that each documents will not be submitted just in one time as those who are full with
experience might come out with mistakes as well, and so did we. We recorded down the
requirements and carried those documents back to the office and evaluated all the documents
again. This process might not earned me impressive soft skill in architecture but indeed, I learnt to
communicate with clients as an architect, how to defense ourselves, and how to accept the critique
at the same time.

Last two weeks in the office, I was helping to draw the elevations and sections for two bungalows at
Damansara Height, the design has been approved by the client, it was shown through a sketch up
model, and model may not be the accurate one. Another college has done the plan, not exactly
following the models, but I was asked to complete the drawings following the plan, referring to the
model. I met a lot of obstacles that blocked me to move forward, as there is too much differences
between two of the references. This came to the time I learnt, to manage and learn through myself,
because everyone in the office are busy with their tasks, and I could not keep asking them and I
should think of the solutions first.

So do the details of TNB. I was given the materials in an unarranged file and I was asked to do the
drawings and arrange them into a nice looking board. These challenges made me to learn to duel the
things myself, note down the problems and issues, move on to the next step, finally I was able to
complete the task and pass it to my college to take over the rest within my duration of internship.

Last but not least, practicing in a small firm does not make my vision smaller than others, but this is
the foundation to me, before I am able to work with a larger team, and also, it makes me to
understand how the career works, and I am more confident to what I am pursuing.
