Editors Note
Perhaps no issue has been more fundamental to the history of mankind than the transit (and tran-
scendence) of people, cultures, and ideas over borders. This concept of immigration has spawned
bloody wars, weaved new braids in Rivera murals, empowered the minds of the Western world with
the technology of printing, and allowed millions to prosper and millions to parish.
In the US today, this subject has largely been distilled into two camps divided along political lines.
This state of division, if never discussed openly, has the potential to crease and eventually demarcate
our nation.
We have dedicated this issue to exploring the topic of immigration as it impacts us. Distill the pro-
tests, boycotts, TV skits, nationalities, languages and tweets and you will discover a world of vibrant
individuals affected by immigration. Some fear the closure of their factory and the destruction of
their livelihood, others fear a vacancy by deportation in their household.
Here, we present fresh student voices on these topics and original reporting that explores the macro
effects of transporting of students from another area to our school.
This Hi-Tide also marks the debut of creative student content in our publication. Turn to page 14 to
begin exploring our first theme: intuition.

Hidden Sonata
by Thomas OLoughlin
This park is a wonderful place on this chilly, fall morning. Few people
to disturb natures performance. The morning dew, still fresh and exquisite. Its
quiet, calm, and peaceful. I savor the crisp, pine air. The occasional bird flies on
by and chirps its song, the Squirrel nestling in its burrow, admiring its vast col-
lection of hard-earned nuts. Some of the dew makes its way to the nearby pond.
When they hit the water they explode like a series of silent firecrackers. The
trees are called to pay their daily tax and spend away their morning droplets.
These silently fall to the ground and are collected by the flowers. These flowers
possess a youth and an innocence that well never understand, they collect the
droplets of life and youth, and then as the sun bestows its gift of light upon
them, they radiate with life, an aura thought only to exist in the skies above. The
trees look of another realm. Such vibrant, wondrous colors. Wasted on a greedy
race of creatures unworthy of such divine, lively beauty. The dry fallen leaves
crunch under my foot as I stroll through the park. I can only stand stupefied at
how their colors decorate the stone walkway and bring it to life. Some might
have mistaken it for walking on a rainbow. The woman who sits on that weather
worn bench. Its wood old and creaking under those who sit on it. She drifts off
into a deep slumber, unbothered by the light drizzle. Her bright, hazelnut hair
swaying, gently in the calm wind. Her chilled breath swiftly expanding in the
area around her. The wind passes through the trees, causing them to rock from
side to side, its leaves departing from its branches, to be carried away to lands
untold, dancing ever so eloquently. As it passes through, the wind softly howls
to me.
I listen with intent and marvel at the silent symphony in my ears. A symphony
of another tongue unknown to man. This is Mother Natures Sonata. Her theater
is the earth and ground. Her instruments are the plants, the animals, and the
wind. Her spotlight is our luminous sun and our ever-watchful moon. This is her
song, greater than any other well ever know, hidden from the masses, known
only to those with the strong mind and sharp eye. Join the chorus and embrace
the feeling of the colors and sounds as they electrify your soul. This is her Hid-
den Sonata.
The zephyr blows on. Weaving through this sun-lit forest. The natural si-
lence evokes the old magic of the symphony. The sound of strings being plucked,
chimes beautifully elsewhere. The Nymphs and Sprites light the forest with a
lovely glow as the sun rests. Hold yourself close and enter another world apart.
Where the grass runs like an ocean of emeralds. The roses as fresh and pure as
virgins blood. Down the path. The hypnotic dandelions drift as our guide. The
chimes sound again. The clearing is here, wide and open. Down by the stream,
its water, star-lit and silver. Childish flowers full of energy bounce and sway. The
cotton clouds carry on lazily in the vast azure sky. The log, old and strong, atop
sits an Elven woman. Playing her lute. Her hair light and fine. Her skin supple
and white. Her face young and wise. Her green eyes soft and kind. Her fingers
elegantly strum her instrument in a way that can only be described as passion-
ate, But why must there lay a soldier at her feet, cold and dead? She continues to
smile sweetly and play her lute. The atmosphere feels warm and wet. The heat
stirs. The earth rumbles and I rise again.
