Maintenance free The key to our system is a centering bar which consists
systems for floor, of two wear resistant spheres fastened at opposite ends of
a flat spring steel bar. These act as lubrication free bearings,

When you select Latham Flexible Mechanical Expansion Joint Covers, and have a special configuration fabricated, you are taking
advantage of a unique solution to the problem of keeping joint covers firmly anchored despite movement between sections of
concrete flooring. This ensures a long-lasting, trouble free and stable floor base.
The mechanical expansion joint covers are designed to permit multi-directional six-way movement. The cover unit is free to move
horizontally, vertically, and horizontally in shear without damaging the surrounding concrete and paving, deforming the cover plate
or shearing the screws holding the cover plate in place.
Whatever your project, Latham Flexible Mechanical Expansion Joint Covers are available and can be fabricated to almost any
width or required joint movement.
Optional water gutters or fire barriers are part of the totally trouble free full joint system.
All Latham Mechanical Expansion Joint Covers unless otherwise detailed are designed for normal pedestrian applications. If the
application is heavier e.g. high traffic areas like railway stations or airports or where heavier loads may transverse the joint cover,
see the heavy duty and vehicular ranges, consult Latham Australia to specify a suitable cover thickness.
All Latham Expansion Joint Covers offer various amounts of movement as indicated by the symbols associated with systems and
the related tables detailed below. All systems will accommodate general thermal expansion and contraction and shrinkage as
indicated. In some cases depending on the requirements of the structure, standard systems also will allow seismic movement,
although in applications where a structure has been designed to accommodate extreme seismic movement the Latham Seismic
Range of expansion joint covers should be considered. More information can be found on pages 60-64.

Note 1: Movement referred to in this publication should be viewed in the following way. The + (positive) factor refers to the effec-
tive amount the joint cover can extend (the joint in the slab increases in width), whilst the (minus) factor refers to the effective
amount the joint cover can contract (the joint in the slab decreases in width). These are effective movements, the systems may be
effected by load and traffic volume and other circumstances, which may require a larger or heavier system to be considered. All
movements shown in the tables refer to the expansion joint cover being in its standard installation configuration A (as detailed in
tables). Altering the installation position will alter the available movement, but will not alter the total available movement.
Systems also offer vertical movement and horizontal shear as indicated by the relevant symbol associated to the particular joint
cover. The amount of this is dependant on the system and the joint width. Consult Latham Australia for further information in rela-
tion to a specific joint cover.

Product Information
Materials
Metals
Extrusions used in Latham Expansion Joint Covers are aluminium 6063-T5 & T6 mill finish alloy, brass 380 mill finish alloy or stain-
less steel decks, Type 304 Grade, 2B finish to 3mm thick, thicker stainless steel decks are supplied in No.1 finish. On request other
stainless steel finishes are available if specified at time of order and subject to minimum order quantites.
When expansion joint covers are being installed in areas of high temperature change or in continuous runs, special consideration
should be given to thermal expansion of the metal components, which is approximately 0.025mm per metre, per degree Celsius of
temperature change. Allowances should be made accordingly for side members and particularly cover plates during installation.
Vinyl
All vinyl plastic extrusions used are polyvinyl chloride (thermoplastic). This material has extreme versatility; it is light weight,
strong, tough and inert to most chemicals. It is a metallic grey colour in most profiles, blending with our standard finishes. Other
colours may be available for large volume orders or as detailed on the specific product page in this catalogue. Some expansion
joint inserts are supplied with neoprene or santoprene inserts.
Finishes
Coatings
Titazel PE31, is a protective coating applied to all steel members to protect and control electrolytic action.
Clear Anodised
20 micron finish is standard for all wall and ceiling visually exposed cover units, with the exception of the M, ML, MSM and MLSM
Series which are supplied mill finish unless otherwise specified.
Protective Tape
All exposed anodised aluminium surfaces will be supplied covered with protective film/tape to be removed on application.
Materials covered with protective tape should not be subjected to prolonged sunlight or extreme temperatures and the tape should
be removed within 30 days of delivery.
Cover Plates
All aluminium, brass and stainless steel floor cover plates are discretely stamped on the surface close to one end as manufactured
by Latham Australia, which ensures installed material can be identified in the future and is the clients confirmation that the speci-
fied product has been installed. Cover plate thicknesses may vary for aluminium and stainless steel. Confirm cover plate thickness
with the technical sheet for the selected profile, available from Latham Australia. Thicker, wider cover plates may protrude slightly
above the side member, but are suppled with a half height bevel at 45 on most covers.
Standard Product Lengths

All material is supplied standard in the following full lengths: Aluminium Standard and Heavy Duty Series 3050mm, Aluminium
Light Duty Series 4000mm, Brass 4000mm, Stainless Steel Decks 3050mm.

Components
Spring Steel Centering Bars
The spheres attached to the spring steel centering bars act as nylon bearings, mini-

mising wear and tear of the embedded cylindrical channel members. The centring bars are specially treated and produced from
specially hardened spring steel. Light tension from the cover plate to the centring bar, through the screw, reduces the likelihood
of the screw becoming loose. All Latham spring steel centering bars are treated with Titazel PE-22 coating or Titazel PE-20 zinc
coating to assist in protecting the centring bars from moisture etc. Most centring bar screws are supplied to suit a small Phillips
head screwdriver to help ensure the system is not over tightened causing the centering bars to lock and possibly snap.
Anchors
CA-16 aluminium/BM-16 brass block-out or CA-6 aluminium/BS-6 brass cast-in type anchors in standard
applications are installed at 500mm centres on both sides of the embedded members. CA-16 aluminium/ CA-6
BM-16 brass block-out anchors will be supplied unless otherwise specified. To specify CA-6 aluminium/BS-6
CA-16
brass cast-in anchors for ranges suited to these angles specify Latham Mechanical Expansion
Joint Cover Type with CA-6/BS-6 cast-in anchors. Latham Australia recommend that all
embedded aluminium members be coated with Tnemec PZ9 protective coating (optional extra) CCA-16
- see page 7.

Fixing Holes and Locations
Most expansion joint covers are supplied with side members pre-drilled to suit fixing sizes as indicated on the
relevant joint series page in this publication.
Splices
Where applicable to the joint type specified, CA-16 block-out or CA-6 cast-in splices are supplied to assist with
positive alignment of aluminium embedded members. Latham Australia recommend that all embedded aluminium
members be coated with Tnemec PZ9 protective coating (optional extra) - see page 7.
FC2 Form Clips

For cast-in place installations FC2 form clips allow the embedded member with anchor to be set accurately on the
6 form work. These can be supplied when CA-6 cast-in anchors have been specified (optional extra).
Optional Extras
Tnemec PZ9 Protective Coating
A coating applied to aluminium surfaces that are to be embedded in cement, Tnemec PZ9
protective coating should be considered to minimise corrosion and electrolytic reaction
with embedded members. Latham Australia recommend the use of Tnemec PZ9 for all
embedded sections, particularly externally and in areas where water or moisture is com-
mon. Specify with Tnemec PZ9 Protective Coating.
Slip Resistant Surfaces

A re-surfacable slip resistant coating can be applied to most of the aluminium, stainless

steel and brass cover plates. Slip resistant coating when specified will be supplied in
black colour unless otherwise specified. Other coating colours available. Contact your
Latham Australia technical representative. Specify with re-surfacable slip resistant
coating.
Powder Coating/Anodising
Powder coating or anodising can be applied to all exposed aluminium surfaces. Latham
Australia does not recommend powder coating or anodising for floor or floor to wall
expansion joint covers, as the surfaces are often easily scratched by foot traffic. Specify
type of coating and colour required. Interior/exterior wall and exterior roof joint covers,
can be successfully powder coated or anodised to harmonize with the surrounding fin-
ishes. Contact your Latham Australia Pty Ltd technical representative for further details.
Protective Tape Coating

Available for all mill finish exposed products. Specify with protective tape coating. Also
see Finishes - page 6.
Water Gutter
Available for most Latham expansion joint covers (available with all ranges that carry
( ) symbol in the description), Latham expansion joint water barriers are made of high
quality flexible PVC for the VWS Series, and Neoprene for the BFG Series. Water barriers
are furnished in continuous lengths where possible to reduce field splicing.
While exterior wall covers effectively keep most water out of the joint, wind, blowing rain
and seepage require the use of water barrier at exterior joints. Water barriers are also
suggested for interior floors subject to mopping and washing. Specify V after the prod-
uct code for water barrier e.g. CA-25V.
At exterior walls, water should drain freely to the exterior at the base of the joint cover.
When difficult drain points occur in roof and floor joints, a flexible PVC drain tube may be
installed allowing drainage to building drain systems.
Fabricated Metal Sections

Latham Australia recommend that all corners, cross overs and tees, be factory fabricated
for effective performance. See page 57 for further details.
Cutting to Length and Factory Assembly

All expansion joint ranges can be factory cut from full lengths to site supplied mea-
surements if required, at extra cost. All recessed and surface mounted expansion joint
covers can be factory assembled for quicker installation if required. Specify factory
assembled. Note: some profiles need to be assembled on site.
Packing and Bedding Compound

Latham Australia recommend a high strength non shrink grout be used for filling all
recesses for standard pedestrian joint covers. Higher strength epoxy grout should be
used in special and extreme conditions including all vehicular applications.
Mechanical Fixings
Fixings are not supplied by Latham Australia. Suitable fixings for your application should
be sourced, ensuring the expansion joint cover is securely fixed to the structural slab at
the indicated centres on the relevant page of this publication for the joint cover selected.
Latham Australia Fire & Smoke Barriers

Latham Fire & Smoke Barriers should be used with Latham Expansion joint covers to
provide systems with 2 and 4 hour fire ratings. Latham Fire & Smoke Barriers can be used
with most Latham wall, ceiling and block out type floor expansion joint covers. Latham
Australia Fire & Smoke Barriers allow expansion and contraction, vertical shear and lim-
ited horizontal shear movement. Contact Latham Australia Pty Ltd for installation criteria.
Fire rated wall joint covers are available for gypsum wall board and masonry construction.

The Latham Ultimate Series offers a range of expansion joint covers suited to most floor and floor-to-wall applications.
The systems offer generous thermal and structural movement and shrinkage and will accommodate limited seismic
movement. Systems are available in stainless steel, aluminium and brass to complement most facets of architectural
design, whilst incorporating the required movement element. Ultimate Series floor and floor-to-wall expansion joint
covers should be considered with Wall-Line Series wall and ceiling expansion joint covers.

The Latham Flat Lines Series NO BUMP expansion joint covers are specifically designed for applications where a bump in the floor can
not be tolerated. These systems offer limited movement but ensure that there is no bump for beds or trolleys that pass over the cover. The
systems offer thermal and structural movement and shrinkage and will accommodate limited seismic movement. Systems are available
in stainless steel, aluminium, brass and various shallow cover plate inserts, to complement most facets of architectural design, whilst
incorporating the required movement element. Flat-Line Series floor and floor-to-wall expansion joint covers should be considered with
Wall-Line Series wall and ceiling expansion joint covers.

The Latham PAVA-InLay Series Expansion Joint Covers offer an architecturally appealing outcome particularly for wider joint systems.
They are suited to sand cement bed tilling and cement tile and paving applications, but can be equally effective with other forms of floor
finishes like, carpet, vinyl, rubber, epoxy and even direct stick carpet. The systems offer generous thermal and structural movement and
shrinkage. They also will accommodate limited seismic movement. The standard systems are available in Aluminium and Brass to com-
plement most facets of architectural design, whilst incorporating the required movement element. Latham can also manufacture custom

The Latham RTJ-1 is designed for car parks,

The RTJ-1 Joint consists of a special reinforced elastomeric system designed to RTJ-1 25 45 300 +/-25mm 50mm
allow an expansion joint to open or close without creating tension or other stresses. All dimensions are in millimetres.
The aluminium cover plate also acts as a vehicle speed hump and is installed in
driveways, car parks, or other exposed installations. The cover plate protects the
elastomeric system from ultraviolet attack and physical damage. It is designed to
eliminate any stress to the adhesion and cohesion of the system components.
The joint can be modified if necessary to control any predetermined movement of

components and can be installed over existing sealant materials, saving cost of
removal. The cover plate can be readily removed for inspection.

Special car joint types can be provided for wider joint widths or greater movement
requirements. Crossovers, Tees and Angles can be accommodated. Heavy duty
modified systems are available for commercial and industrial vehicles. Slabs should

form a fall from both sides of the joint to eliminate ponding.

Seismic Systems Series DURABLE | EXTREME MOVEMENT
General Information
The Latham range of seismic expansion joint covers, are designed to accommodate extreme movement that occurs during seismic
activity and earthquakes. They are also commonly used in modern hi-rise structures, that experience excessive movement during
very high winds like typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones. These structures are usually isolated from the ground by base isolators
and are designed to move during these occurrences. Generally structural joint widths designed to accommodate seismic activity
are much wider than normal expansion joints in buildings. The theory behind this is that the slabs of the structure can move large
amounts without bashing into each other causing structural damage to the building. The Latham range of Seismic Expansion Joint
Covers are designed to accommodate this potential movement, with little or no damage to the expansion joint covers, meaning the
structure in relation to the expansion joint covers will be damage free and functioning normally after a seismic or high wind event.
It should be noted that all of the Latham ranges of mechanical expansion joint covers will accommodate some seismic movement,
particularly when the structure is designed with wide joint width to accommodate this potential movement. Although standard
ranges of expansion joint covers may require some maintenance and repair after seismic activity occurs. In some cases design-
ers and owners of the buildings feel it may be better to put in a system that will deal with the movement and require some repair
after a seismic incident, as this generally reduces the width of the expansion joint cover required. Discuss these options further
with your Latham representative.
When it is necessary to install a Seismic Expansion Joint Cover, Latham Seismic Systems offer the best option to deal with the
movement. All of the systems can be custom made to suit different joint widths and allow different amounts of movement to best
suit the design criteria for the structure.

When specifying expansion joint covers, architects, engineers and building owners
should specify protection against fire and smoke which can cause considerable dam-
age and loss during building fire. Often this is a government or authority requirement.

Latham offer Fire Rated Systems (Barriers) to be used in conjunction with the Latham Flexible Mechanical Expansion Joint
Covers. All have been tested and classified by one or more of the following independent, internationally recognised authorities: US
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (USA), Omega Point Laboratories Inc. (USA), listed by Warnock Hersey International Incorporated
(USA) and listed by The State of California State Fire Marshal. Latham Fire Rated Systems are available with the security of 2 and
4 hour fire ratings for joint widths from 50mm to 1200mm wide.

Latham Fire Barriers can be used with most floor, floor-to-wall, wall, roof, roof-to-parapet and ceiling joint covers for a high
degree of design flexibility. Latham Fire Barrier Systems can also be used in shaft wall, curtain wall and chase wall applications.
Membrane type fire barriers allow limited shear movement. Fire rated wall joint covers are available for gypsum, wall board and
masonry construction. Standard Latham Fire Barriers accept limited horizontal shear movement.
Incombustible
The Fire Rated Systems Lathams offer, are fabricated from high quality, inorganic materials. They are incombustible and do not
create smoke or contribute fuel during a fire.

Flexible Floor Covers For Installation in Pedestrian Applications

Cover units at floor junction to be Latham Type at flat floor conditions and Latham Type at floor to wall conditions (in
mill finish aluminium alloy 6063-T6/brass 380C/stainless steel 304). Any filler strips shall be secured in place in a manner that will
not allow them to become disengaged as the expansion joint opens and closes. The cover plate shall be fastened in place in such
a manner that it maintains a constant spring tension at its centre point. This cover must be designed to allow .mm of horizontal
movement and .mm of vertical movement and function correctly during horizontal movements. All corners, crossovers and tees
to be factory mitred, welded and furnished with 500mm legs in each direction. All Covers should be installed with suitable mechani-
cal or epoxy fixings to suit the site conditions. Ensure that the installation of joint covers is carried out in accordance with Latham

Flexible Wall & Ceiling Covers

Interior and exterior cover units at walls and ceilings shall be Latham Type and Latham Type with clear anodized visual
finishes. The cover unit shall be flexible type to permit .mm expansion and contraction and a minimum of .mm perpen-
dicular movement without damage to the wall or ceiling surfaces. All cover units used on expansion joints must be anchored on
each side of the joint opening, expect for specific snap-on covers as detailed on pages 34 and 35 of Latham Technical Manual 43.
Continuous aluminium anchor strips for flush mount wall and ceiling covers to be field drilled to match mortar joints in brick, block,
or other material. All corners, crossovers and tees to be factory mitred, welded and furnished with 500mm legs in each direction. All
Covers should be installed with suitable mechanical fixings to suit the site conditions. Ensure that the installation of joint covers is

movement and function correctly during horizontal movements. This cover must be designed to accommodate loads not exceeding
a standard wheel load ofkg, based on a 300mm diameter by 125mm wide tyre, over a minimum cover length of 1000mm, at a
maximum operating expansion joint width of .mm. All corners, crossovers and tees to be factory mitred, welded and furnished
with 500mm legs in each direction. All Covers should be installed with suitable mechanical or epoxy fixings and should be packed
with high strength, no shrink epoxy grout to suit the site conditions. Ensure that the installation of joint covers is carried out in

RTJ Series Car Joint Covers

Cover joints at junction of paving shall be Latham Type RTJ-1 in mill finish aluminium alloy 5083. Cover units supplied in 2400mm
lengths. The cover plate protects the elastomeric system from ultra-violet and physical damage. The waterproofing Elastomeric
Con-proof system is only to be applied over a sound, suitably prepared concrete surface to guarantee waterproofing. All corners,
crossovers and tees to be factory mitred, welded and furnished with 500mm legs in each direction. All Covers should be installed
with suitable mechanical or epoxy fixings to suit the site conditions. Ensure that the installation of joint covers is carried out in

Fire Resistant Specifications to USA ASTM E119/E814 Standard

All Fire Rated Expansion Joint Covers must have been tested in accordance with the standard time temperature curve. The test
specimen to include any splices, mechanisms and anchoring devices and represent a true field installation. It shall also be moved
through at least 10 movement cycles from minimum to maximum design opening prior to testing and placed at maximum design

WARRANTY POLICY
Latham Australia Pty Ltd warrants to its
purchasers that all products sold by it will STAIR
upon delivery be free from defects in materials
and workmanship. This warranty shall extend NEOPRENE TREAD
for a period of one (1) year following the date EXPANSION LOC & TILE STRIPS NOSINGS
of shipment by us. Any claim in respect of a
defective product must be made in writing
prior to the expiration of the warranty period
and must give particulars of the alleged defect.
Subject to acceptance by us of the claim we
agree to make good such defective product
by repair or replacement (at our option) at our
factory. All other costs whatsoever including
the costs of disassembly and reinstallation and
the cost of transport to and from our factory if
applicable shall be borne by the purchaser.
It is a fundamental condition of sale that all
other warranties of any kind whether statutory
or otherwise and whether express or implied
are hereby excluded and that we accept no
responsibility for consequential loss or damage
of any kind.
