WHAT IS THE ZIKA VIRUS?

The Zika virus is a disease that is spread by the Aedes mosquito via mosquito bites. The flu like symptoms
disappear over time without further treatment. However the main identified health risk is the connection
between Zika infection and damage to an unborn child.

Unlike the mosquitoes that spread malaria, the aedes mosquitoare active during the entire day.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ZIKA VIRUS INFECTION?

Symptoms of zika virus infection may include but are not limited to:

Fever
Rash
Joint Pain
Conjunctivities (Red eyes)
Muscle pain
Headache
Pain behind the eyes
Vomiting

HOW DO I PREVENT VIRUS INFECTION?

To reduce the risk of being infected with the Zika Virus, you should try and avoid being bitten. This will also
protect you from other diseases caused by mosquito bites, such as Dengue and Malaria. The most effective
bite prevention methods to use include:

The use of DEET based repellents such as gels and sprays on all exposed skin i.e.face, neck,
hands, ears etc. Repellants with DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) content > 35% must be used.

Wear clothing that fully covers the body, including your arms and legs. Spray your clothes with
repellent, too.

There have been a small number of reports of zika virus has been passed on through sexual intercourse.
Although the risk is thought to be very low please take precaution to ensure your partner does not get
infected.

Because of the risk for the unborn child, please make sure that in case you or your partner are pregnant or
are planning to become pregnant and have recently returned from an area with active Zika virus transmission
visit your doctor and mention where you have visited, even if you do not feel unwell. Your doctor will discuss
the risk with you and can arrange additional medical precautions.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

There is no specific treatment for the Zika virus yet: drinking plenty of water, taking paracetamol and getting
plenty rest may help relieve symptoms.

All fevers must be considered as a potential virus infection, until proven otherwise.

If you observe any of the above mentioned symptoms, report immediately them to the Doctor onboard or to
your own Doctor if you have returned back home.
