PROCESS HEAT TRANSFER (ChE-308)

Assignment #2
Assigned: February 27, 2017
Due: March 03, 2017
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: 1- Please solve following problems stated here.
2- You can use Process Heat Transfer by D. Q. Kern for finding various fluid properties or other
required data.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q #1: It is desired to heat 230 kg/h of water [cp = 4.2 kJ/(kg C)] from 35 to 93 C with oil [cp =
2.1 kJ/(kg C)] having an initial temperature of 175 C. The mass flow of oil is also 230 kg/h. Two
double-pipe heat exchangers are available:
exchanger 1: U = 570 W/(m2 C) A = 0.47 m2
exchanger 2: U = 370 W/(m2 C) A = 0.94 m2
Q #2: Aniline is to be cooled from 200 to 150 F in a concentric-pipe apparatus having
70ft2 of external pipe surface by 8600 lb/hr of toluene entering at l00F. A value of
U = 75 may be anticipated. How much hot aniline can be cooled in counterflow?
Q #3: A counter-flow heat exchanger was designed to cool 13,000 lb/h of 100% acetic acid from
250 F to 150 F by heating 19,000 lb/h of butyl alcohol from 100 F to 157 F. An overall heat-
transfer coefficient of 85 Btu/lbm F was used for the design. When first placed in service, the acetic
acid outlet temperature was found to be 117 F. It gradually rose to 135 F over a period of several
months and then remained essentially constant, indicating that the exchanger was over-sized.
(a) Use the design data to calculate the amount of heat-transfer surface area in the heat exchanger.
(b) Use the initial operating data to calculate the value of the clean overall heat-transfer coefficient.
(c) Use the final operating data to calculate the value of the overall heat-transfer coefficient after
fouling has occurred.
(d) Use the values of UC and UD found in parts (b) and (c) to obtain the correct (experimental)
value of the total fouling factor, RD RDi (Do/Di) + RDo, for the system.
Q #4:In a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger, water flows through a copper tube (19 mm
outer and 16 mm inner diameter) with a velocity of 1.48 m/s. The oil flows through the annulus
formed by inner copper tube and outer steel tube (30 mm outer and 26 mm inner diameter). Steel
tube is insulated from outside so, heat losses are negligible. The oil enters at 0.4 kg/s and is cooled
from 65 C to 50 C whereas water enters at 32 C. Calculate the length of the tube required for
this heat exchange.
Data is given as
Nu= 0.023(Re)0.8 (Pr)0.4
Fouling factor, water side = 0.0005 m2 K/W
Fouling factor, oil side = 0.0008 m2 K/W
Water and oil properties:

Property Oil Water

(kg/m3) 850 995

cp (Kj/(Kg.K)) 1.89 4.187
k(W/(m.K)) 0.138 0.615
(m2/s) 7.44*10-6 4.18*10-7

Q #5: 12,000 lb/hr 26 API lube oil is to be cooled from 450 to 350 F by heating 42 API kerosene
from 325 to 375F. A pressure drop of 10 psi is permissible on both streams, and a minimum dirt
factor of 0.004 should be provided.
(a) How many 20-ft hairpins of 2.5 in by 1.25 in IPS double pipe are required?
(b) How shall they be arranged?

Good luck.
