It was felt that for an organization like CETAAT with several activities, a News Letter will be a very useful medium for its members to be kept informed on these activities. In addition, information specific to our Alma Mater, its illustrious alumni and contribution from the alumni on other matters of interest con be port of the News Letter, 8 CETAAT has completed 3 years of activities, It is gratifying to note that CETAAT has been one among the very active Chapters of CETAA. A very dynamic Executive Committee and members who are genuinely Interested in and extend support to the various programmes of CETAAT have enabled us to sustain this level of activities, ‘Nanaging Committee meetings have been held every month on the first Tuesday, except in a few cases when the date had to be changed due to holidays. “Tech Talks’ by ilustrious CET Alumni on their field of expertise are being held regularly. Family Meets held three times a year, where we also receive quests of honour from amongst our Alumni, are highly patronized by members. ‘Raga Tharangan? our own music group with vocalists 2s well as instrumentalists from amongst our Alumni has developed into an ‘accomplished Musical Ensemble, which has regaled our members during the Family Meets and had enthrelled the CETians from all over the world during CETAA Global Meet 2016 at Kochi. Raga Tharangam fall set for Rs first Public Performance to be held next month. ‘Our members have been generous in their contributions for cheritable purposes and we could undertake several projects to assist needy ingividuals & institutions in this area. CETAAT membership today is 579. I would use this opportunity to request all members to bring in more of their batch mates and friends into cur fold, also to make an effort to kindle interest in our activities amongst the younger Alumni who graduated after year 2000, CCETAAT has plans to associate with Government and Non- Government Agencies in initiatives which willbe useful to the sodety at large, using the diverse skil sets and expertise of our Alumni. I am sure that whole hearted involvement will be forthcoming from our members, in these initiatives. ‘We have made a conscious effort to participate and support CETAA, the parent body in its activites. few of our Alumni with obvious vested interests had tried to delay the formal process of afiiation of CETAAT as a Chapter of the parent body and later the renewal of afflation. They also have been trying to prevent the involvement of CETAAT and its members in the activities ofthe parent body. It is heartening to note thet the President of CETAA and other Office Bearers representing the fecully have understood the fects and our CChapier affiiation was recently renewed. In the process, the afflation of other Chapters of CETAA also has been renewed. Does a robet roll as R202 (from Star Wars) or ‘walk upright a5 C3P0? Does it have expressionistic face or @ mechanical one? Does it function as ‘vacuum or picks objects for you? As there are many uses oF Robotics, itis reasonable to think that there are various desians too, To know how these complex yet intelligent machines move, one needs to look at their engineering, physics closely. Other than the sci-fi movies, the Robots can be seen around us assembling the cars, in botting factory etc. The robots have been in the industry for last two decades because of their continuous working ability in an atmesphere, where humans are not even able to stand for minutes, without any supporting equipment, like space. Since recent years, the researchers are continuously trying to develop more inteligent and selfreiant robots for various applications. The Honda's ASIMO is the best example of such inteligent robots, The human (Homo sapiens) Is the most ineligent creature in the world because he has senses lke vision, touch ete. The researchers are trying to emulate human capabilites by creating "Robo sapiens” having all these senses. Basic structure of robots is very much similar to humans. How do humans sense? For example a human sees something and sends neural signais to the brain via neurons and reacts accordingly. The development of all these senses artificially Is achieved through ‘Sensor Sensors are the transducers which receive the physical changes of the environment and convert them into electrical or electronic signals. ‘These anaiog signals are converted into digital by using analog-to-dgital convertors.Control system functions as a brain in robotic systems, PID controler is a popular method for controling robots. Point of the control system is to get robot actuators do what one wishes to. An encoder on actuator, basicaly a senso, determines what all is changing. Program that one writes, defines final resuits and actuators make changes. Other sensor senses environment, providing robot a better sense of working. ‘Among diferent components, actuators are the most important for robctic automation. This component helps in conversion of stored energy in movement. Usually, theze ore the electric metorz, although compresead air and chemical actuatora are aloo available for uso. Stepper motor rotates in controllable motions and are commanded by controllers. Ultrasonic motor uses fast vibrating piezo-ceramic element for ‘using motion. With the help of compressed air, ar musces work exactly like human muscles, contracting and expanding. Robots are made from an assortment of materials and are driven in many ways too. These can be constructed from sturdy, heavy steel or light weighted plastics. Surcical robots and Robotic arms have uncomplicated rotational joints, driven by hydraulics and electrical motors along with longtudinal joints that are moved with retating screws. Some mobile robots have various wheels that can operate on various plones while others can walk on different terrains with multiple legs. You can find robots with sensing mechanisms like cameras operating 25 eyes and touch sensors for feeling the environment. ofceTaM: ‘offce and the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum. The college was shifted to the location at Kulathur in 1961. Students then doing their final years in 1961 -1962, had the privilege to the first batch to graduate from the new premises. Inits nascent phase, CET offered degree courses only in three branches viz. Civil, Mechanical and El Engineering. Diploma courses were also offered in the same engineering streams. In 1939, 21 students ‘were admitted forthe degree course and same numbers of students were enrolled for the diploma cour Besides this, there was also a certificate course with 40 students, Though seven seats were allotted for ‘each branch of Civi, Mechanical and Electrical engineering, some of the seats in the electrical branches ‘were not filed in some of the academic years. Adjustments were made among the branches in order 10. ‘maintain the total rurnber of seats, Thus, the fist batch to pass out in 1943 tad 11 divi, 5 mechanical and & 3 electrical oraduates. ‘The name and fame of an educatonal institution is amplified by i illustrious Alumni and the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) is no exception. CET boasts of many multifaceted engineers and ‘academicians among its alumni, who adorned or are edorning the top postions in institutions all over the ‘globe. Among them are leaders who have guided and inspired the younger generation.
