Objective:
Describe your current work objective. This tells potential employers the sort of work you're hoping to do. Be specific
about the job you want, use "Power Words" (see Resume Tips) to ensure you make the impression. Your objective
should be customized for each employer/job you apply with. Resumes should be written in 'third person', don't use
"I", "me", or "my".

Education:
If you are a recent student or graduate, list your grade point average only if it is over 75% (grade point 3 out of 4 or
higher). If you have credentials from outside of Canada, or outside of Alberta, you may need to obtain equivalencies
to work in Alberta. (Please refer to International and Cross-Canada Credentials.)

Summer, Also list short education, training, and professional development courses or certificates, especially

Experience:
Employers are most interested in what you did recently. If you have a long career history, focus on the last 10 to 15
years. If your early career is important to your current goal, briefly mention the experience without going into the
details. For example: Early Career: Council of London, London, England - - Town Planner 1, 1990-1993.

If you have held more than one position with the same employer, make sure the total employment period is clear.
There is no need to explain why you left the position. If you are applying for an engineering position, and are working
towards your professional classification, list the month you started and completed each position.

In 4 or 5 points explain, what you did in this job that required skills similar to those needed for
position you are applying for.
The employer reading your resume may not be familiar with the position title or company you
worked for, so you need to give them information about your responsibilities at work.
Start each item with a verb which is active Use "established a new financial system" instead or
"responsible for setting up a new financial system".
List your accomplishments using numbers and expressions of quantity to create a strong mental
image of the work you did.

Use key words you have identified in the job description to express what you have done in your
working role.
They might be key tasks, responsibilities, or training which the employer is looking for. If you have
performed these responsibilities/tasks, make this obvious to the reader.
Do not presume the employer will know what you have done in your position. For example, if the
employer is looking for a financial analyst, and you have done financial analysis within your job
duties, this would be one of priority points at the beginning of your work description.

Describe your experience with concise informative sentences, without your resume reading like a
job description.
Organizing information incorrectly could cost you an interview, and is a very common mistake made
by job seekers.
Take your time to prepare your resume, have a colleague/friend edit it for you. Remember, your
resume is a reflection on your professional abilities.

Skills and Interests:


It is important to include this section to demonstrate that you are well-rounded and possess other skills than those
demanded by your position. An employee working for a public institution like The City of Calgary may need to
understand the role of volunteers in civil society. This section should not be too long.

Choose a title for this section which is most relevant for you. It could be Skills and Interests, Activities/Interests,
Volunteer Work, or other appropriate title. If this information includes some of your strongest qualifications for the
position, call this section "Skills" or "Highlights of Qualifications" and put this section at the beginning of the resume
under Objective. Some examples might include:
Computer skills, technical skills and knowledge should be included here.
Experience with specific machinery and equipment
Languages spoken and written, if appropriate to the position.
Volunteer work which demonstrates that you are public-minded and have worked with the wider
community.

References:
State "References available on request".
Bring your list of references to the interview.
A minimum of 5 references, three references are usually checked.
For references with The City of Calgary please provide the following information:
o Name of person and title
o Relationship to you (supervisor, co-worker)
o Main phone number and/or cell phone, and email address.

Three references should be professionally related, preferably a supervisor or manager. No references should be
related to you, unless this is your only work experience.

Contact your references to get their permission ahead of time. Ask if they would be comfortable recommending your
work. Provide your references with information about the position you are applying for, and which skill set you are
looking to emphasize.
