Hamlet Precis

Online Shakespeare:

This article shows more of the complexity of Gertrudes character. Though Gertrude is usually

portrayed as shallow and vapid , this article states that Gertrude truly had no bad intentions. Even

though she most likely cheated on the King before he died , there is no evidence that she was part

of the murder. Gertrude escapes her serious emotions with excuses and distractions rather than

actually helping her son. She only shows her genuine emotion when confronted by Hamlet. The

author states that her death is tragic although somewhat fitting.

Shmoop:

This article states that Queen Gertrude most likely cheated on King Hamlet with Claudius prior

to his murder that she may have been involved with. The statements in this article are based upon

the statements made by the Ghost who visits Hamlet. Based on prior actions in the play, the

poison wine incident is made out to be self sacrificing. But the author states that Gertrude is

perhaps more complex than Hamlet makes her out to be.The article end with asking the reader

whether the Ghosts statements tells us more about Gertrude or Hamlet.

Craftyscreenwritring:

This article focuses on the idea brought up by the evidence in the story that Ophelia is pregnant

with Hamlets child. In the song she sings, Ophelia shows that she regrets her pregnancy with her

song, and references certain herbs that are known to end pregnancy to show that she does not

want her baby. This is likely because of the abandonment Ophelia felt when Hamlet left her. She
wants to marry and be with Hamlet, but hamlet leaves her and ends up killing her father which is

not at all what she had hoped for. These events lead to her drowning herself later in the play.

In Defense of Hamlets King Claudius:

This article brings up the characterization of Claudius by Hamlet, and how all these features

arent necessarily true. These characterizations include things like Claudius ugly appearance, his

sensual nature, his robbing of the crown, his faulty marriage, and his murderous nature. Each of

these characterizations is looked down upon, and this article states that many of these show faults

in Hamlets own character.
