Western Literary Classic and Canon

The literary terms classic and canon may seem similar in definition, but are

not. Classics are individual pieces of literary work, while a canon is a collection or list of

works by a single author. A classic is a sole composition that has received recognition

and has established value. Classics are memorable and are still interested throughout

the ages. A canon is a collection of works by a particular author that are genuine and

are considered to be the highest quality of their kind. Canons are deemed essential and

must be read by individuals in order to be strongly educated. What they have in

common, though, is that they are recognized by generations of readers of being great

literature.

Novels can become classics or canons with the following characteristics.

Exemplary literature has artistic quality and expresses life, truth, and beauty. It stands

the test of time and is a representation of the period in which it was written. It is also has

universal messages that are relatable to its diverse readers. These novels can earn

literary merit in a few ways by being published as a collection, presented as a list with

an academics imprimatur, and included on the official reading list of an institution of

higher learning.

Novels can also be stripped of their titles, however, if the work and its message

can no longer be applied to modern society. A novel that was considered great during

its time may not last for future readers due to changes and advancements in our world.

Newer generations will have other issues that need to be addressed. Lastly, more

recent books deserving recognition may take the place of old ones who have already

received it.
