Officials from our City are honored to have you as our president, and we are looking forward to working with you and others from your team to help make our nation great again, Our City gained national attention on December 2, 2015 when 14 people were fatally shot and 22 others were wounded by a terrorist husband and wife team. Our City’s police department was appropriately commended nationally for their heroic and swift response. We also witnessed the excellent work and collaboration of the FBI as they worked with our San Bemardino police chief and county sheriff during the subsequent investigation, We have followed the developments of your presidency and believe that your priorities to strengthen law enforcement and build safe communities are important and urgently needed in cities such as cours. In your recent interview with ABC News anchor David Muir, you discussed the murder rate and carnage present in the City of Chicago, likening it to a war zone, even stating you would offer aid if Chicago was unable to curb the violence. ‘As San Bemardino emerges from bankruptcy we are striving to revitalize our community but continue to face many challenges including violent crime. Many of these orimes revolve around illicit drug trafficking, including marijuana. The National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine recently issued a report that clearly demonstrates the harmful health effects of marijuana use. During a meeting that | recently attended, the US ‘Surgeon General reported that as a nation we have over 20 million people struggling with drug abuse. However, the former attorney general's office issued the Cole memo in August 2013 restricting the expenditure of resources for marijuana enforcement. The lack of federal enforcement leaves cities such as ours vulnerable because of the limited resources we have to address this growing national problem.President Donald J. Trump. The White House February 13, 2017 Page 2 of 2 In order to more effectively reduce crime it would help our city to gain the support and partnership of the US Department of Justice in our efforts to address illicit drug and marijuana trafficking. We therefore, respectfully request a meeting with you or your staff and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to discuss the opportunity to collaborate and develop appropriate solutions to improve the safety of our community. If our combined efforts prove successful it could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar issues. Thank you for your consideration.
