clear title, project media literacies, this open source web application will develop traditional humanistic skills including close reading,
textual analysis, persuasive writing, and critical thinking. Initial features will include: 1) easy-to-use annotation tools that
facilitate linking and comparing primary texts with multi-media source, variation, and adaptation documents; 2) sharable
director, executive collections of multimedia materials prepared by faculty and student users; 3) multiple filtering and display mechanisms
for texts, written annotations, and multimedia annotations; 4) collaboration functionality; and 5) multimedia composition
summary, budget, tools. Products of the start-up phase will include a working prototype, feedback from students and instructors, and a
white paper summarizing lessons learned.

Description of Project: The purpose of this research project is to develop a working 3D cancer tissue
model that closely aligns with in vivo conditions. This will provide researchers with the ability to grow
large tumors and gain a better insight as to how drug treatments affect these 3D tumors. The problem
with current preclinical drug therapy research is that they still test new cancer treatments on two
dimensional, or monolayer, cell cultures before moving to three dimensional in vivo animal trials.
These 2D cultures will react with the treatment differently than a 3D in vivo sample. The 3D in vitro
models will dramatically narrow the gap between 2D and in vivo cultures. This project will develop a
3D perfusion bioreactor that will grow and sustain cancer tissue in conditions similar to the human
body. Previous research projects have proven that perfusion of media is essential to increase a cells
functionality. Cells also require a large contact surface to absorb the nutrients from the perfused
media. This new 3D perfusion bioreactor will allow cells to be suspended on a porous scaffold in a
reaction chamber, exposing each cell to media. This decreases cell mortality rate while increasing the
proliferation of an aggregate. These bioreactors can quickly mass produce human cancer tumors that
can be used to research how cancer is spread and treated for a significantly reduced price.
