It͛s a known fact having emotional intelligence is pretty much necessary to

any professional. Before a person starts learning emotional intelligence, it is

important to understand what emotion is and what emotional intelligence is.

Learning emotions/emotional intelligence involves a variety of interesting analysis of

our own emotions and also other͛s emotions at a point of time in learning process.

Emotion intelligence is a critical dimension of a person͛s psychological makeup which

he/she uses to perform his/her professional duties and responsible at work and daily

life situations. This makes learning emotional intelligence a must for every

professional to be successful at work and carry on their jobs smoothly.

Learning emotional intelligence is very important even for any parent to help

them understand their children͛s emotions and feelings to raise them well to be a

good person when they grow up and to be more productive. learning emotional

intelligence involves a series of step by step process. These steps are very simple to

understand and follow. Learning can be self thought and also can be taught to

others.

c c was one of the people who gave great stress

on emotional intelligence. He was a great author, psychologist and science journalist

and wrote twelve years forc c c c and also received his Ph.D. from

Harvard where, he was working as a visiting lecturer.

cDaniel Goleman suggested five domains of EQ, namely:

1. c £nowing your emotions.

2. c Managing your own emotions.

3. c Motivating yourself.

4. c Vecognising and understanding other people's emotions.

5. c Managing relationships, i.e., managing the emotions of others.

One can know his emotions and interpersonal skills with the help of Harry Ingham

and Joseph Luft͛s D c. It was developed as a cognitive psychological tool in 1955

in United States of America to help people know and understand their interpersonal

communications and relationships. It was designed for using it in a ny of the Self-help groups

and in corporate settings as a heuristic exercise.

Johari Windowc is made up of four quadrants in a square in which each quadrant

indicates different information about a person͛s capabilities, weaknesses and strengths. In

the first quadrant as shown in the window represents the area of a person͛s mind known to

him and also to others. This is also said as open/free area/public arena as both individual

and the group knows about it. The second quadrant indicates the blind spot/blind self/blind

area. This quadrant shows the qualities or weakness of a person to him but known to the

group. Through this one can reduce blind spots and be aware of them and increase free

area. More free area means more openness and better relationships within the

organization. This can be achieved with the help of group members by disclosing those blind

spots to the person. The third quadrant represents the hidden area/facade. As the name

suggests, this quadrants indicates the feelings, attitudes, strengths and weakness hidden by

the person intentionally to others because of various reasons. T he fourth quadrants

indicates unknown area/unknown self/area of unknown activities. This area is totally

unknown to both the individual and others. This area exists in almost everybody. This exists

because of some quality which is under -estimated by the individual or by others or because

it is untried. This method can come in handy for organizations for group learning methods.

After understanding Daniel Goleman͛s five domain method and Harry Ingham and

Joseph Luft͛s Johari window we tried to develop a new method for learning emotional

intelligence. This method is easy to understand and also simple to follow. Though it is similar

to Daniel Goleman͛s as it is designed to suit individual learning .

Ñethod/process for Learning Emotional Intelligence:

This stage implies on learning what emotions are? Emotions is a response of a individual for

a stimuli. This responses come from inside of us i.e., from our mind caused by feelings and

attitudes toward that particular stimulus. c

Proportion of reaction to a stimuli cannot be always equal to the stimulus itself. The

proportion of response varies depending on the feelings and attitudes of individual towards

the stimuli.

After learning about the proportion of reaction, one should start reflecting on such occasions and

analyse the reason for that particular disproportion. It is very important to analyse in detail for the

reason as it helps to understand the real cause for disproportion in reaction and stimuli and also to

find out the solution for this problem.

After learning the solution for the problem through analysis, it is time for one to put that solution

into practise. We should start controlling our emotions in future events and use the solution found

for it.

After having learned about our emotions and gaining control over it we should start

identifying others͛ emotions and understand them well. This is very important to
learn emotional intelligence.

This is where we actually know how good our emotional intelligence is. It is very important

to react with empathy to other individuals in the organizations to solve problems and

improve efficiency at work.

This helps us to resolve conflicts within and outside the organization. This creates a healthy

work environment at work place. This helps us to develop our emotional intelligence level

more and more every time we help others to resolve conflicts which arises due to emotional

reasons.

¦¦ Ways To Develop Emotional Intelligence

Creating commitment within to learn and develop emotional intelligence is very much

important. In this way an individual will be more interested in learning as he/she would

have created willingness towards developing emotional intelligence. c

Incidents which occurred in the past which is related and occurred due to emotional factors

can be used as a case study or base to analyse and understand the reasons behind the

incident. One should remember the whole si tuation once and reflect on it and analyse the

situation and cause.

After analysing the situation one should start thinking about creating a alternative response

for the same situation which would have been a much mature response and would have

avoided the extreme outcome. Using imagination very vital in this stage. The more one

spend time for imagining, the better alternatives he/she can come up with.

Application knowledge and skill is most important thing in any field. After having developed

emotional intelligence to certain extent it is important to put it in action in real life situation

or work situationc
