Title:
Research Proposal

Instructions:
Students need to develop a 13-15 page proposal to describe the research project/thesis they are
pursuing
Ideally, this proposal should be presented to the students supervisor for review, discussion, and
refinement before it is submitted. The basic idea is to present a general idea of what is to be
done so modifications can be made without a student wasting considerable time on an
unsuitable research question.
Key items that need to be included:

A. Title and Abstract (5 points)


i. Introduce your work, your overall goals and ideas of your desired topic
B. Introduction (20 points)
i. Background of the study
ii. Clearly stated problem and purpose of the study
iii. Objectives of the study
iv. Research Questions/Hypotheses (depending on research type)
v. Independent and dependent variables
vi. Justification and Significance
vii. Scope and Limitations
viii. Definition of terms
C. Review of the Literature and Conceptual/Theoretical Framework (25 points)
i. Review of Related Literature
ii. Conceptual/Theoretical Framework (where applicable)
iii. Description of theoretical framework to be utilized
iv. Rationale for choosing framework
v. Identification of concepts to be explored.
D. Review of the Literature (15 points)
i. Appropriateness of review and the proposal focus.
ii. Inclusion of primary or secondary sources
E. Methodology (25 points)
i. Description of study type (quantitative only)
ii. Description of study design.
iii. Rationale for the use of the selected design.
iv. Inclusion of sample size, type, sampling method, inclusion/exclusion criteria, setting,
data collection method (instrument) and data collection process.
v. Method for Protection of Human Subjects (consent). (Questionnaire and consent forms
must be included as Appendices)
F. Data Analysis (10 points)
i. Data analysis method appropriate for study design.
ii. Method of data analysis clearly stated.
iii. Method for displaying findings is stated.
G. Conclusion (5 points)
i. Recap why the hypothesis is new, why it advances knowledge, why is it worth
researching and how.
H. APA Format (10 points)
i. Use of margins, headings, spelling is error-free, use of citations, and references.

Guidelines:

An electronic copy of your work must be presented using Microsoft Word, Arial text font size 11
with 1 spacing between lines.
Use appropriate sub-headings to structure the work.
Academic misconduct (e.g. plagiarism, collusion) is a serious offence therefore work must be
original and supported by references to scholarly materials.
Read widely and interpret the literature in your words (paraphrasing).
Direct quotes should be kept to an absolute minimum.
Using APA 6th ed. referencing system, references cited in the body of the text must match those
in the end reference list.
You are required to submit the assignment in form of electronic copy, and submission is via e-
mail.
The label of your proposal file should be:
- Name_CohortNo_ResearchProposal
- For example: Kay_Cohort2_ResearchProposal
