Donald E. Bechtol, 77, owner
of the Progressive Tool and Die
in Delphos for more than 40
years, passed away Friday eve-
ning at Van Wert Manor in Van
Wert.
Born April 17, 1933, in Van
Wert to Clark and Ruby (Imler)
Bechtol, he attended Van Wert
High School
His wife, Gloria “June”
(Halliwill) Bechtol, survives in
Van Wert.
Other survivors include a
son, Timothy Bechtol of Van
Wert; a daughter, Linda (Mark
Herrmann) Bechtol in Denver,
Colo.; and a granddaughter,
Bailey Nicole Herrmann.
During high school, Mr.
Bechtol worked at Dolly’s
Restaurant in Van Wert. He was
a veteran of the U.S. Army during
the Korean War serving in Pisa,
Italy. Before and after his Army
service he worked at National
Seal in Van Wert. He partici-
pated in Golden Gloves Boxing
Tournaments, holding a champi-
on title, and he played football in
high school. He was a member of
the Van Wert American Legion.
Funeral services will begin at
10:30 a.m. Monday at Alspach-
Gearhart Funeral Home. Friends
may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8
p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

ELIDA — Elida Local
School District is right on
schedule with the building
of their new 169,000-square-
foot high school, which will
be open for classes in fall
of 2011. Superintendent Don
Diglia says everything has
gone smoothly due to the
quality of the workers.
“Everything being done is
coordinated through the con-
struction company and they
have anywhere from 70 to
100 workers out here every
day getting this built,” he
said. “Everyone is working
very well together and we’re
staying right on schedule. All
of this should be closed in by
October, which will be good
for the colder months.”
A lot of the school is,
for the most part, closed in.
Diglia says they’re holding
off on some of the walls and
brick work to leave room for
more construction.

Buettner learned to patient-
ly swirl the sugary confec-
tion into roses and other
designs.
“I have always liked
being creative,” Buettner
said. “Mr. Benavidez is a
great teacher and I know
what I learned will make my
project better.”
This is Buettner’s fourth
year with the Pathfinders
of Delphos. She will also
be submitting a scrapbook-
ing project from a family
vacation to Disneyworld in
Florida and another creative
arts project.
Both her younger and
older sister are in the
Pathfinders and the girls
have followed in their
mother’s footsteps. Denise
Buettner was also in 4-H
and her specialty was cake
decorating.
“I submitted cake-deco-
rating projects and I loved
to work on them,” Denise
said. “I can help Maddie a
little and now that she has
worked with Alex, she has
learned a new trick or two.”
Maddie will be in the
seventh grade this fall and
she also enjoys Blue Jay
volleyball, painting and
water sports.

BP oil leak could be com-
pletely contained as early as
Monday if a new, tighter cap
can be fitted over the blown-
out well, the government offi-
cial in charge of the crisis said
Friday in some of the most
encouraging news to come out
of the Gulf in the 2½ months
since the disaster struck.
If the project planned to
begin this weekend is suc-
cessful, it would simply mean
no more oil would escape to
foul the Gulf of Mexico. The
well would still be busted and
leaking — workers would just
funnel what comes out of it
to tankers at the surface. The
hope for a permanent solution
remains with two relief wells
intended to plug it completely
far beneath the seafloor.
“I use the word ‘con-
tained,’” said retired Coast
Guard Adm. Thad Allen.
“’Stop’ is when we put the
plug in down below.”

Summer is half over and I haven’t accom-
plished much of anything except work.
Oh, to be a school kid again with endless
days stretching before me filled with nothing
more strenuous than dragging myself to the
pool or to a neighbor’s house to kick around
and do, well, nothing.
Of course, the kids today don’t even have
that luxury. Some have a schedule packed
with baseball and other activities. Don’t for-
get the library’s summer reading program. I
was returning from lunch on Friday afternoon
and a woman was just getting into the car
next to mine. In the back seat were two young
gentlemen, each engrossed in a book.
“What is this?” I asked. “It’s summer vaca-
tion and you have two readers in the back
seat.”
Mom replied that there was a required
amount of reading each day before there was
any fun.
My deeply-suppressed nerd reared her head
and I said, “I think reading is fun.”
There is nothing better than a good book.
I don’t care what the weather; a book is the
perfect addition to my day. I should adopt the
philosophy that there is no reading until the
work is done. I would be much more produc-
tive on Saturday mornings, my favorite time
to sit on the porch and pour over the pages of
an exciting mystery or the newest best-seller.
It kind of made me feel sad that reading is
a chore for some.
The reading program, “Make a Splash
— Read” at the library is in full swing. I
have thoroughly enjoyed the programs I have
attended and am well past the age limit.
A lot of forethought, effort and sweat goes
into the annual program that affords children
in pre-K through fifth grade with an alterna-
tive to lazing around with a Gameboy or a
