SENIOR PROJECT PROPOSAL

Saiaana Sahadeo
Class of 2017
A. ABSTRACT

The title of my paper is Gender Inequality in Education and is going to lead to my

project titled Life Through Somebody Elses Eyes. For my project, I intend on hosting a fair

with different activities in order for students to learn about gender inequality in other nations in

ways the students would find fascinating. With education being my broader topic, I plan to go

more in depth with this topic by focusing on gender inequality in education. I intend to use this

topic to compare different cultures by comparing the severity of gender inequality in other

countries. I decided to do this project because I have always been fascinated by learning about

other cultures and other nations for as long as I could remember; it astonished me that many

students do not know about our world. The topic of gender inequality would help spread my

passion for learning about other nations because I am able to show the educational system in

countries other than the United States.

The following questions will guide my research:

Are students denied educational opportunities due to their gender and if so, what

opportunities are being denied?

Are there legal cases in which a student felt they were discriminated against because of

their gender?

Are there countries in which gender inequality is part of everyday life?

Do public officials in some nations support gender inequality in education?

At my fair, I hope to provide activities that would help students learn about gender

inequality in countries around the world. I intend to have the following activities: effects of a

lack of education, gender inequality in other nations, and an arts and crafts station where the

student paint/draw want they want to do when they grow up. I hope to hold my project at North
Landing Elementary School in the Spring of 2017 in order to educate students about the world

we live in. While I intend for my project to raise awareness about this issue, I want the students

who attend my event to learn about other nations as well. To accomplish this goal, I am

publishing a childrens book about facts about other countries, which will be featured at a station

at my project. I plan to donate copies of my book to the North Landing Elementary School

Library; this would allow the students to become more familiar with the world around them. The

success of my project would be measured by the amount of students who attend my project next

year. Although the amount of people is an important factor in my projects success, it also

important to me that the students are interested in the activities they are doing and they want to

know more.

I will need the following materials to complete my project:

Arts and crafts supplies: paint, colored pencils, markers, etc.

A computer to create an introduction slideshow

Research to provide information about gender inequality to the students

My consultant is Dr. Godfrey; he was my LSA English 9 teacher and my SAT tutor junior

year. Dr. Godfrey earned his doctorate degree in education last year; therefore, he understands

why a proper education is valuable to each and every person. In his class freshman year, I

presented a project on inequality in education, so Dr. Godfrey knows this is a topic that I have

had always had a passion for. Both of us understand why everyone deserves to have the chance

to receive an education.

B. LEARNING SKILLS

Skills I will need to enhance:

Presentation Skills
o I will be doing a short presentation at the beginning of my project to introduce my

project to the students who attend

Communication Skills

o Calling North Landing Elementary School to get permission to do my project

there

o Communicating with other students to volunteer at my project

o Planning with Ms. Phillips to allow the volunteers to obtain volunteer hours

Planning Skills

o Organizing the activities for the students to do

o Organizing the venue

Skills I will need to learn:

Marketing skills

o To help raise awareness of what my project is about and when it is

Documenting my project

o To keep track of the steps of my project

o To be able to take photos and videos as I complete my project

Publishing my book

C. MARKETING PLAN/FACILITIES/AUDIENCE

I decided to host my project at North Landing because I went to school there for six

years, and I want to be able to give back to my school. I am also still in contact with their faculty,

so it would be great venue to be able to secure. Elementary school students will be the ideal

audience for my senior project because students rarely have the opportunity to learn about issues

faced in other countries; these students are young enough that they can use my project as a
foundation to build on their knowledge about the world as they work towards their high school

diploma. Students need to become aware of issues facing students in other countries; its just as

important to be concerned with global issues as it domestic issues. The younger you are when

you learn something, the more cognizant you are of it as you progress with your learning. In

order to market my project, I plan to get permission from the administration to post flyers around

the school, post the date and time of my event on the schools website, and have the teachers tell

their students about the project and maybe provide extra credit for attending.

F. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION

My project is one that will challenge me, but will also allow me to enhance skills that I

have learned while being in the Legal Studies Academy. In order to hold my event, I will need to

communicate with the administration at North Landing Elementary School in order to organize a

date and time for my project and be able to market my event to the students. This will be the first

time I have organized an event of this size; planning this event is a skill I have to learn. Another

skill I have to learn is how to publish a book because one of the activities at my fair will be the

students reading my book in order to learn about other countries in the world. This project will

give me the opportunity to enhance my public speaking skills because I will be giving an

introduction presentation on the facts of gender inequality in education eat my event. This project

challenges me, but still allows me to research a topic I am passionate about. The topic of

education is one I have been passionate about for many years; it hurts me that some children do

not have the opportunity to get a proper education. I am doing this project to spread awareness of

how many children are unable to get the education they deserve.

G. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION
My research paper explores the legal issue of gender inequality in education through case

law and statutory law. My project will bring about awareness of gender inequality in the

educational system through comparison between the United States and other nations. At my

project, I will give a short presentation of the facts of gender inequality and why this is an issue

my audience needs to know about. After that, my audience will complete the different stations,

where they will learn about gender inequality in other nations and the effects of being

discriminated against in the educational system. The severity of gender inequality differs

depending on the country and this is something my audience will learn. Not only that, the

students who attend my topic will understand that people who are discriminated against do not

receive a proper education, and the effects this have on their careers.

H. ACADEMIC HONESTY

Academic honesty means that I can reassure my teachers that the work I turn in is my

work, I did not receive help from anyone. Plagiarism is defined as copying someone elses work

and taking credit for it.

I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will result in failure

of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.
