End of Course Exams (EOCs)

are coming soon! Those students who are taking an EOC will receive an email in
mid-late March with your testing schedule. Dont confuse EOCs and final ex-
ams! EOCs are taken in-person and are only for students taking English 1, Alge-
bra 1, Continuing Algebra, Biology, and US History. If you are not taking any of
these courses, you do not have an EOC. Final Exams are taken online the last
week of school. If you have any questions about final exams, contact the
teacher for that class.
If you are taking an EOC course and have not yet completed our survey to se-
lect your preferred testing location, please do so by going to
http://tinyurl.com/2017EOCSurvey. The survey will close on Friday, March 17th.
Club dates can be found on the school calendar on the school home page.

SCVCS Student Spotlight: Carter Kirkland
Carter Kirkland has been playing basketball for years. He loves the game and has played at
several different levels. However, it doesnt stop there. He wants to become a college basketball
player like his dad was. Carter said, I have been playing basketball for 11 years. I have played
rec leagues, AAU, and in school. My dad played collegiate basketball and was a high school
and AAU coach for 17 years. My twin brother and I have played basketball for as long as I can
remember because we want to follow in his footsteps and play in college.
Carter went on to mention the pros and cons of basketball. Like most athletes, the pros far out
-weigh the cons. He said, The cons of playing basketball are the tiresome hours of working on all
aspects of your game. Also, there are going to be games where you are off or lose in a heart-
breaking last second shot. The pros are seeing your hard work pay off and being honored by
awards and championships. I cant imagine my life without basketball. I was a typical gym rat
with my dad always being the last person to leave the gym. I grew up knowing that basketball
would have a defining place in my life. The spirit of competition and the friends that I have made
on the teams that I have played on are irreplaceable facets of the game that I love. Carter is a
hard worker and enjoys practicing the game he loves, which makes it easier for him to be suc-
cessful on the court.
Since basketball is a team sport, we know that each player has their own role on the team. It is
important to know that team sports are won and lost by the team and each member must ac-
cept their role. Carter addressed this by saying, Playing point guard, I have to be the coach on
the court. I try to be the best encourager that I can be to my teammates. My advice to teens
that want to get involved in basketball is GO FOR IT! It is a team sport, it is important to know that
as a member of a team, you wont have to face adversities and the competition alone. You
have to accept the role that you have on the team. When you work as a team together, great
things can be accomplished. If you are willing to make sacrifices and work together through the
trenches, great things will come.
In closing, Carter gave five tips for students aspiring to play basketball. He said, (1) Practice.
Repetitive practice is something that is required for anything that you want to excel in. When you
think you have practiced enough, practice more. (2)Try to improve your overall game. Dont just
work on shooting. Work on all aspects of your game Remember that offense wins games, but
defense wins championships. (3) Your character means more than you know. Being coachable,
teachable, and a pleasure to work with on and off the court is ultimately what will put you and
your team on top of the game. (4) Know your role and adjust when necessary. There are games
that you will score 20. There are games that you just cant seem to hit the broad side of a barn.
You have to be aware enough and mature
enough to know that you might not be the spark
plug in shooting every game, but you can be in
another aspect. If the rock isnt falling for you,
find the one who it is falling for and get the assist.
(5)NEVER GIVE UP! Every athlete has slumps. A
night of misses could turn into a week a
month.... An injury could happen that causes an
unforeseen setback. Keep practicing and keep
your head up. The only way to fail something is to
quit. Remember that how you do one thing is
how you do everythingso NEVER QUIT.

Thank you for sharing your talents and insight with

us, Carter!
SCVCS Teacher Spotlight: Cindy Reed
My name is , and I am a

Mathematics instructor at SCVCS. Its hard

to believe that this is my 18th year teaching.
Wow How time flies when youre having
fun! I have been teaching for SCVCS for the
last seven years. I enjoy getting to know stu-
dents outside of the classroom too, so I help
sponsor the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society,
Beta Club, and the SMASH Club. I live in
Greenwood, SC and have lived here for
over 25 years.

After graduating from Clemson University in 1990, I went back to school and earned
my Masters of Education Degree from Lander University. I became a National Board
Certified Teacher in 2001, renewing the certificate in 2011. Learning never stops for
anyone! I believe that learning is a life-long process, and I can always learn some-
thing new to be better than I was the day before.

Spending time with my family is what I like to do most. My husband is a math teach-
er at a local high school, and we have two children Caroline (11) and Leland (8).
Since they are involved in sports, I spend a lot of time outside at practices, games, or
just playing in the yard. It is never a dull moment. Traveling is another activity I like

to do. Anyone that knows me well, understands that the beach is my happy place,
and I cant wait to get back there for Spring Break!

Teaching for SCVCS is the best job Ive ever had. The teachers, staff, and administra-
tion are phenomenal. Teaching is my passion, and I look forward to live Class Con-
nects and interacting with students. I am truly blessed to have this job and am
thankful every day for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our stu-
dents at SCVCS.

Thank you, Mrs. Reed. We appreciate all that you do for the students and staff at
South Carolina Virtual Charter School!
