Lesson Plan: Writing numbers 11 and 12

Repeated reasoning
Obiective: SWBAT to write teen numbers.
Student Friendly Objective: Using your pencils, write the numbers L1 and 1,2 on
your worksheets.
Assessment Assess the children as they work on their worksheets.
Key Vocabulary: eleven, twelve
Anticipatory Set: Do the freeze counting with the children.
Recall Prior Knowledge: Recall prior knowledge of the teen numbers 11 and L2.
Input/Modeling: Tell the children that we are going to start writing teen numbers
today. Pass out the papers and have them put their name at the top and put their
pencil on their nametag. Remind the children that ten numbers are made with ten
ones and some extra ones. The number 11 is ten ones and ask the children how
many extra ones. Ask the children how to write the number L1 on the board. Write
the number on the board and then ask the children to practice writing the number
11. in the air.
Have the children trace the number LL on their papers and then write the 11s using
the starting places.
Ask the children about the letter 12. It has 1-0 ones and how many more extra ones?
Ask the children how you should write it on the board. Write the number on the
board and haye the children practice writing the number XZ in the air.
Have the children trace the number l-2 on their papers and then write the 1,1s using
the starting places.
Tell children that they are now going to add and subtract sorne numbers. Tell them
that they can use their fingers or drawings to help them.
Do the first three problems with them and show them hnw to solve the problems
with their fingers and drawings. Tell the children to do the rest of the problems.
Walk around and help tirern if needed.
Check for UnderstandinglGuided Fractice: Check the children as they work on
their worksheets.
lndependent Practice: The children will practice independently as they write the
numbers l"L and 12. They will also solve the addition and subtraction problems.
Closure: Remind the children that teen numbers are numbers that have 10 ones and
some extra ones as well.
