Concept 1: Research skills for History

PO 2. Place historical events from content studied in chronological


order on a timeline.

PO 4. Use primary source materials (e.g., photos, artifacts, interviews,


documents, maps) and secondary source materials (e.g.,
encyclopedias, biographies) to study people and events from the past.

Concept 4: Revolution and New Nation

PO 4. Discuss contributions of key people (e.g., George Washington,


Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin) in gaining independence during
the Revolutionary War.

Requisite knowledge: Students should know that the first American


settlers came from England. They should know that England taxed the
colonists, which made the colonists unhappy.

Knowledge gained from the unit:


-Students will learn about the Declaration of Independence
-Students will be able to use biographies to research events and
people.
-Students will be able to place events in chronological order on a
timeline.

Overall description of what you want students to know,


understand, and be able to do by the end of the unit:

Students will use books and videos to identify the main contributions of
George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson during
the Revolutionary War. They will create an accurate timeline of the
events of the Revolutionary War. They will recognize the connections
between pictures and the text.

Objectives for each lesson:

1. SWBAT recall information about Englands taxation of the


colonists.
2. SWBAT discuss key events leading up to the Revolutionary War.
3. SWBAT name three key people during the Revolutionary War.
4. SWBAT identify main contributions of George Washington during
the Revolutionary War.
5. SWBAT identify the main contributions of Benjamin Franklin
during the Revolutionary War.
6. SWBAT identify main contributions of Thomas Jefferson during
the Revolutionary War.
7. SWBAT create a PowerPoint on the contributions of Thomas
Jefferson, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin.
8. SWBAT plan their timeline.
9. SWBAT organize information in a rough draft of their timeline.
10. SWBAT construct the final draft of their timeline of the
American Revolution.
