Leadership and influencing people can only be achieved through thorough

understanding of the human nature with deep sincerity and sympathy. When
dealing with people, the fact that were creatures of emotions not logic is often
neglected, but people by nature seem to be motivated by pride and ego and I
believe the most effective way to persuade someone is by framing it in terms of
what motivates them the most.
I knew the basics and I was able to test my influencing skills during the college
years, but learned a lot of my leadership skills after graduation. Although I have
only 2 years of experience, but during these 2 years I was trusted with a lot of
responsibilities. when I was only 22 years I was assigned to lead and supervise
my shift during our new ethylene plant start-up and commissioning back when I
was working for TCI sanmar. I had to daily assign the shift tasks to my shift co-
workers, make sure assigned tasks are accomplished and report any problems
that I couldnt solve. in summary, I was responsible for our shift in front of the
general manager. It was a heavy responsibility that I knew only senior engineers
would be assigned for, although all of us in the shift didnt have any previous
work experience I was the youngest and it could be quite difficult to supervise
older co-workers and asking them to follow the tough orders of the
commissioning phase. I was very motivated, genuinely interested in my co-
workers and frequently organized outings outside work. I was carful when I
criticize I kept a positive tune and made sure that work always seemed problem-
solving games, a competition with other shifts and our work is actually a work of
creation by bringing our unit to life. It took 5 months for the successful start-up
and it was one of our proudest career moments.
Recently, my position as a R&D engineer in my refinery complex (Amerrya
petroleum refining company) is all about the power of knowledge and decision-
making skills. Our department enabled me be to interact with a lot of high-profile
licensing and consultant companies such as Bechtel, UOP, ENNPI, EPROM, etc. to
improve our existing process systems and participate with data and reports for
the new technologies. Our department is responsible for process-wise decision
making which includes but not limited to: whether we construct a certain unit or
not, whether we buy new process equipment or not and even the specifications
for this equipment, regular meetings with the Egyptian general petroleum
cooperation to discuss and improve our units performance.
