The Department of Computer Science and Engineering @ Sri Ramakrishna Ins tute of
Technology (SRIT), Coimbatore, has launched a new series of Faculty Development Programs
namely Professional Development Series on Wednesday, November 16, 2016. The central
theme of this series is "Transforming the Teaching Landscape".
The name is derived from the core Tamil term which in its original meaning
stands for a repository of water. We believe that, as water takes the shape of container in
which it is contained and delivers output based on how it is put to use, knowledge can a ain
dierent levels of visibility, clarity and outcome depending on the person who consumes and
redelivers it and achieves outcome depending on how it is put to use. So we decided to create
a repository of the most vola le knowledge for sharing and making it more meaningful, as the
name suggests. This mo va on leads us to ini ate this endeavour.

TEK-ARTICLES
A.VISUAL CRPTOGRAPHY
64
Each pixel of the images is divided into smaller blocks. There are always the same number
white (transparent) and black blocks. If a pixel is divided into two parts, there are one white
and one black block. If the pixel is divided into four equal parts, there are two white and two
black blocks. The example images from above uses pixels that are divided into four parts.
In the table on the right we can see that a pixel, divided into four parts, can have six dierent
states. If a pixel on layer 1 has a given state, the pixel on layer 2 may have one of two states:
iden cal or inverted to the pixel of layer 1. If the pixel of layer 2 is iden cal to layer 1, the
overlaid pixel will be half black and half white. Such overlaid pixel is called grey or empty. If t he
pixels of layer 1 and 2 are inverted or opposite, the overlaid version will be completely black.
This is an informa on pixel. We can now create the two layers. One transparent image, layer 1,
has pixels which all have a random state, one of the six poss ible states. Layer 2 is iden cal to
layer 1, except for the pixels that should be black (contain informa on) when overlaid. These
pixels have a state that is opposite to the same pixel in layer 1. If both images are overlaid, the
areas with iden cal states will look grey, and the areas with opposite states will be black.
The system of pixel can be applied in dierent ways. In our example, each pixel is divided into
four blocks. However, you can also use pixels, divided into two rectangle blocks, or eve n
divided circles. Also, it doesn't ma er if the pixel is divided horizontally or ver cally. There are
many dierent pixel systems, some with be er contrast, higher resolu on or even with color
pixels. If the pixel states of layer 1 are truly (crypto secure) random, both empty and
informa on pixels of layer 2 will also have completely random states. One cannot know if a
pixel in layer 2 is used to create a grey or black pixel, since we need the state of that pixel in
layer 1 (which is random) to know the overlay result. If all requirements for true randomness
are fullled, Visual Cryptography oers absolute secrecy according to the Informa on Theory.
If Visual Cryptography is used for secure communica ons, the sender will distribute one or
more random layers 1 in advance to the receiver. If the sender has a message, he creates a
layer 2 for a par cular distributed layer 1 and sends it to the receiver. The receiver aligns the
two layers and the secret informa on is revealed, this without the need f or an encryp on
device, a computer or performing calcula ons by hand. The system is unbreakable, as long as
both layers don't fall in the wrong hands. When one of both layers is intercepted it's
impossible to retrieve the encrypted informa on.

B.RASPBERRY PI
INTRODUCTION
The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor
or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable li le device that enables
people of all ages to explore compu ng, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch
and Python. Its capable of doing everything youd expect a desktop computer to do, from
browsing the internet and playing high-deni on video, to making spreadsheets, word-
processing, and playing games.
HISTORY
It was developed in England,United Kingdom by the Rasperry Fi founda on with the intent to
promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries. The
original Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi 2 are manufactured in several board congura ons
through licensed manufacturing agreements with Newark element14 (Premier Farnell), RS
Components and Egoman. The hardware is the same across all manufacturers.
So ware
Opera ng system:
The Raspberry Pi primarily uses Linux kernell based opera ng systems. The ARM11 chip at the
heart of the Pi (rst genera on models) is based on version 6 of the ARM. The current release
of Ubuntu supports the Raspberry Pi 2. while Ubuntu, and several popular versions of Linux,
do not support the older Raspberry Pi 1 that runs on the ARM11. Raspberry Pi 2 can also run
the Windows 10 IoT core opera ng system, while no version of the Pi can run tradi onal
Windows. The Raspberry Pi 2 currently also supports Raspbian, OpenELEC and RISC OS

C.EYE TRIBE
Eye tracking has been ac vely discussed by technology enthusiasts throughout these years,
but its really challenging to implement. But Eye Tribe actually did this. They successfully
created the technology to allow you to control your tablet, play ight simulator, and even slice
fruits in Fruit Ninja only with your eye movements. (Image Source: Eye Tribe) Its basically
taking the common eye-tracking technology and combining it with a front-facing camera plus
some serious computer-vision algorithm, and voila, fruit slicing done with the eyes! A live
demo was done in LeWeb this year and we may actually be able to see it in in ac on in mobile
devices in 2013. Currently the company is s ll seeking partnership to bring this sci- tech into
the consumer market but you and I know that this product is simply too awesome to fail.

D.STUDENTS VULNERABLE TO CYBER CRIME
Researching for school and project work, socialnetworking, downloading music and movies
rank highest in the list of online ac vi es of children.NEW DELHI: About one-third of school
going children surveyed in some states of India have experience cybercrime including
cyberstalking, defama on, hacking and cyberbullying, as per a study by telecom operator
Uninor.
"A survey done by Uninor in schools across seven states in India indicates that 30% of Indian
children accessing internet have experienced some kind of cyberharm. This includes
cyberbullying, cyberstalking, hacking and defama on," the Uninor report said.
Earlier in 2013, A Telenor Group-Boston Consul ng Group study had said that 134 million
Indian children would be ac ve on the internet by 2017, up from 39.5 million in 2012.This
study was done in 12 countries and had showed that Indian children face the worst risk
combina on of high access and low resilience.
"The survey is an eye opener on the vulnerability of our children while they are using the
internet. One learning is to avoid discouraging the child from using phone but to monitor their
ac vity and have rules that keep their use in limits and create awarness on principles of online
ac vity like safe passwords or not to provide personal informa on to anyone," Uninor
corporate responsibility head Pooja Thakran said.
Uninor has set target to train 35,000 children under its 'WebWise' programme to build
resilience among children against internet-related risks."WebWise is an ini a ve with an
objec ve to equip children with knowledge and tools to protect themselves online.Since
March, 15000 children have been covered under this programme. The company has plans to
extend it further and cover addi onal 20,000 children by January next year.

E.BIG DATA
Big Data History and Current Considera onsWhile the term big data is rela vely new,
the act of gathering and storing large amounts of informa on for eventual analysis is ages old.
The concept gained momentum in the early 2000s when industry analyst Doug Laney
ar culated the now-mainstream deni on of big data as the threeVs:Volume.Organiza ons
collect data from a variety of sources, including business transac ons, social media and
informa on from sensor or machine-to-machine data.
In the past, storing it wouldve been a problem but new technologies (such as Hadoop) have
eased the burden.Velocity.Data streams in at an unprecedented speed and must be dealt with
in a mely manner. RFID tags, sensors and smart metering are driving the need to deal wit h
torrents of data in near-real me.Variety.Data comes in all types of formats from structured,
numeric data in tradi onal databases tounstructured text documents, email, video, audio,
stock cker data and nancial transac ons.
At SAS, we consider two addi onal dimensions when it comes to big data:Variability. In
addi on to the increasing veloci es and varie es of data, data ows can be highly inconsistent
with periodic peaks. Is something trending in social media? Daily, seasonal and event -triggered
peak data loads can be challengingto manage. Even more so with unstructured
data.Complexity.
Today's data comes from mul ple sources, which makes it dicult to link, match, cleanse and
transform data across systems. However, its necessary to con nect and correlate rela onships,
hierarchies and mul ple data linkages or your data can quickly spiral out of control.

F.TURING TEST IN ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE
TURING:
In Ar cial intelligence, the turing test is a method for determining whether or not a
computer is capable of thinking like a human. The test is named a er Alan Turing,an english
mathema cian who pioneered ar cilal intelligence during the 1940's and 1950's.
TURING TEST:
In basic turing test, there are three terminals. Two are operated by humans and third
terminal is by computer. Each terminal is physically separated from the other two
terminals.one human is designated as the ques oner. The other human a nd the computer are
designated as the respondents. There are extreme dicul es in devising any objec ve
criterion for dis nguishing original.Turing suggested the imita on game, now known as
the Turing test: a remote human interrogator, within a xed me frame, must dis nguish
between a computer and a human subject based on their replies to various ques ons posed
by the interrogator. By means of a series of such tests, a computers success at thinking can
be measured by its probability of being misiden ed as the human subject.
During the compe on, each of four judges will type a conversa on with one of us for ve
minutes, then the other, and then will have 10 minutes to reect and decide which one is the
human. Judges will also rank all the contestantsthis is used in part as a ebreaking measure.
The computer program receiving the most votes and highest ranking from the judges
(regardless of whether it passes the Turing Test by fooling 30 percent of them) is awarded the
tle of the Most Human Computer. It is this tle that the research teams are all gunning for,
the one with the cash prize (usually $3,000), the one with which most everyone involved in the
contest is principally concerned. But there is also, intriguingly, another t le, one given to the
confederate who is most convincing: the Most Human Human award.
One of the rst winners, in 1994, was the journalist and science-c on writer Charles Pla .

G.THE LATEST IN DIGITAL PUBLISHING: NEW APPS TO LOOK FOR
With Neuland 2.0, a "Startup Village for Digital Na ves" returning to the Leipzig Book
Fair in Germany later this year (March 23-26, 2017), we take a look at some of the most
promising digital apps and programs in the publishing industry.
These apps have all been selected by a jury to exhibit at the Leipzig Book Fair. Here's what sets
them apart, and why you might be hearing more about them in the coming year.
Wavefont by Silicon Surfer aims to unite speech and text by using dierent -shaped fonts to
visually explain pronuncia on. This has huge poten al in language learning, as well as reading
for the hearing impaired.

H.OCULUS RIFT
The Oculus Ri is a virtual reality headset developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a
division of Facebook Inc., released on March 28, 2016. It was developed by a team of industry
veterans passionate about changing the way people experience
video games forever. The ul mate aim of the team was to
provide Step inside your favorite game. The team had
dierent types of games and the Ri was designed for gamers,
by gamers.Oculus Ri is designed specically for video games
that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With
an incredibly wide eld of view, high resolu on display, and
ultra-low latency head tracking, the Ri provides a truly
immersive experience that allows you to step inside your
favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.
The Ri takes 3D gaming to the next level. There are a number of VR headsets out there,
but none that deliver a truly immersive gaming experience. Most products either lack the
technical features required for believable immersion or sit at a very high price-point ($20,000+)
reserved for the military or scien c community. The team set out to change all that with the Ri ,
which is designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone
can aord.
The Oculus Ri headset uses an OLED panel for each eye, each having a resolu on of
10801200. These panels have a refresh rate of 90 Hz and globally refresh, rather than scanning
out in lines. They also use low persistence, meaning that they only display an image for 2
milliseconds of each frame. This combina on of the high refresh rate, global refresh and low
persistence means that the user experiences none of the mo on blurring or judder that is
experienced on a regular monitor. It uses lenses that allow for a wide eld of view. The separa on
of the lenses is adjustable by a dial on the bo om of the device, in order to accommodate a wide
range of interpupillary distances. The same pair of lenses are used for all users, however there are
mul ple facial interfaces so that the user's eyes can be posi oned at a dierent distance.
Headphones are integrated, which provide real me 3D audio eects. The Ri has full 6 degree of
freedom rota onal and posi onal tracking. This tracking is performed by Oculus's Constella on
tracking system, and is precise, low-latency, and sub-millimeter accurate.
When the user puts on the Ri and no other content is being output to the headset, they are
presented with Oculus Home. This is the default environment of the Ri , allowing the user to
launch VR applica ons they own, see if their friends are using the Ri , and purchase virtual reality
content on the Oculus Home store from the headset.Oculus Home's store is curated to only allow
applica ons that run smoothly on the recommended hardware, and experiences are given ra ngs
for their comfort. Oculus Home is en rely op onal.
The main applica ons of Ri are Gaming ac vites and Non-Gaming ac vites such as
Media,Social,Industrial,Professional,Television and Sports.
