Mythen und Helden

Einfhrung :

Artikel A Frankfurt begrsst die Heroes de
Janeiro
Profisportler sind Vorblider : Piotr Malachowski. Ein Polnischer Diskuswerfer wie hat ein
Silbermedaille gewinnen.
Extremsportler.

Also, sind Profisportler Helden ?

Places and forms of power

Introduction :
I am going to talk about the notion of places and forms of power. First, I would like to give a
definition of power. Power is is the ability to control others and that is could be political power. To
illustrate this notion, I have chosen to focus on South African places and forms of power. How can
people from different cultures live together in harmony ? First I will show how apartheid was put in
place and I talk about the opposition of this forms of power.
Finally I will talk about the present in South Africa, if things have evolved or if there are still traces
of the Apartheid.

Part One : The past

- Past opression : etablishment of colonies (Afrikaans spoken by a group of white people with
Dutch origins). Apartheid it was the political system wich seperated black and white people in
control. This is segregation, discrimination and racism. We seen a photo where we can see a bench
with the words Blankes, europeans that show the discrimination. There is repression of non-
whites, with the passbooks, it is a pass to have access to white areas and to work here. This is a
racil identity card. Black people lived in Township.
- Resistance : the ANC, African Nationnal Congress its a political party. Some White people were
for the equality, like Breytonbach, its an intellectuel, a poet. He struggled against Apartheid.
Nelson Mandela was in prison to struggled against the Appartheid, he was the leader of ANC.
There is a key event in Soweto, black people demonstrate against the afrikaans in school for the
younger. The demonstration is tranformated in a riot and that was a bloodshed. There was 600
people dead.

Part Two :

- Reconciliation and power-sharing : There is a new constitution and a black president, Nelson
Mandela was president since 1994 and 1999. The black peoples right are recognated. And there is
an emergence of a blakc middle-class. But is not everywhere the case, in Soweto there is still a
township because of the unemployement and the majority of the population is black.
- There is still inequality, there is still a gap between whites and blacks people. This is in terms of
prospects, income, employement rate and living conditions. In the township of Soweto there is no
water and no electricity for everyone, but in other district of Johannesburg there is the black and
white bourgeoisie with big houses with pool. In South Africa university sutdent protesters have won
the right to be taught in English. That was in 2015. For the student Afrikaans is the langage of
oppression and its use as the teaching medium disavantaged black people. We read an article about
this.

Conclusion

To conclude, people from different cultures can live together in harmony thanks to a long and
painful fight for equality leading by persons like Nelson Mandelo. It is true that there have been
major political and social advances in South Africa but there is still problems. Furthermore
economic power is still unequally distributed, it still exists a gap between the rich and the poor as
we could see in Johannesburg with Soweto township.
Spaces and exchanges in Ireland

Introduction :
I'm going to talk about the notion Places and Exchanges in Ireland. This notion can show the links
between one space and the different exchanges. The exchanges is about the immigration and the
emigration. The history of Ireland is composed of waves of immigration because of political and
economic motives. Irish immigration is one of the most famous immigration.

I- From recession to boom :

1845---> The great famine : huge waves of immigration to England, USA and Australia. Over one
million people died and more one people emigrated. There is a Famine memorial in Dublin. There
is statue of people. There are skinny and they look poor. This is a gloomy representation.

Ireland suffered from poverty, chronic unemployement and emigration until 1990s.
Emigrant Journey painted by Bernard Canavan : On the first panel we can see people who are
praying, they must want better living conditions. On the second panel, we notice people fleeing the
country. They're going to England.
Before the boom the life was hard and the Irish immigrate to England to practice manual jobs.

In the 1990s it was the begining of the Boom. In Ireland there is a young educated workforce. This
workforce talk english. Ireland is in the European Union. There is foreign investement and tax breks
for the buisness. Big internationnal compagny came in Ireland like Apple.

II- From Boom to bust

1995 -- The Celtic Tiger was born. There was full employment and a growing economy. A lot of
house was build to welcome new people.
There is mass migration. The return of Irish emigrants and arrival of foreign immigrants. We listen
some memories about the Celtic Tiger. Many people call their family to go back in Ireland.

However the dream was short-lived. The 2008 economic bust resulted of a American financial
crisis. There was a global recession. Many people was in negative equity. People bought a house
and they borrowed. But with the crisis their property have less value than their borrow. So there is
ghost estates, its abandonned tract. We listen a a testimony that said it had to be good for the
population, the children, with shopping centers, it had to be very alive.
The unemployment grow up.
Now the economic situation has improved but the net migration is still negative. The Celtic Tiger
become The Celtic Phoenix.

The Irish diaspora, with the differents waves of emigration, has grow to the extent that in 2011 an
estimated 70 million people are Irish descent. Its more than 15 times the population in Ireland
today. The Irish community is without borders, the Irish cultural heritage is still alive.

Conclusion :
Since 1845, the irish economy caused many exchanges (Irish emigration or immigration), with
boom and bust and with many crises. The Irish diaspora, with the differents waves of emigration
cause of the crises, has grow to the extent that in 2011 an estimated 70 million people are Irish
descent. Its more than 15 times the population in Ireland today. The Irish community is without
borders, the Irish cultural heritage is still alive.
