Name: Katie Jones
Grade Level: 7th-10th grade
Content Area: Mean, Median, Mode, standard deviation for a set of data.
Basic Productivity Tool Used: Excel
Standards Addressed:
MGSE8.SP.1. Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to
investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as
clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear
association.
MGSE7.SP.1 Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a
population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a
population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that
population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative
samples and support valid inferences.
MGSE7.SP.2 Use data from a random sample to draw inferences about a population
with an unknown characteristic of interest. Generate multiple samples (or simulated
samples) of the same size to gauge the variation in estimates or predictions. For
example, estimate the mean word length in a book by randomly sampling words from
the book; predict the winner of a school election based on randomly sampled survey
data. Gauge how far off the estimate or prediction might be.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:
Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating
Creating
Description of how to implement in the class: Students will go online to the
URL www.footprintcalculator.org/ or www.mec.ca/Apps/ecoCalc/ecoCalc.jsp. There are other
sites that calculate an ecological footprint; you can do a Google search to find others. This
site has 13 questions that students are to answer. From their answers, the site calculates the
number of acres needed to sustain that persons choices. The site also converts the acres
into the number of Earths needed to sustain the planets population if everyone lived in the
same manner. Then we will collect a class set of data and evaluate the mean median and
mode and standard deviation for the data. We will also calculate how much land it will take to
sustain the class and how many Earths it will take to sustain the world population if the class
is a good sample size for global carbon foot prints. Then for home work the students will
create an excel worksheet after collecting data from their home for a week for their
households carbon foot print. The excel sheet will graph and find the mean median and
mode of the data that they collect.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): Loti Level 3. The lesson asks
students to create and analyze their own data and it uses advanced tools in excel.
There is an element of BYOT to complete the online questionnaire in class. There is a
level of global awareness about resource problems that face us all but the
information does not leave the class room.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided: The Excel
sheet they will see attached is an example of the excel sheet they will collect data for
and create based on the usage of resources of the members of their household. It will
include the data, graph and statistical information.
