Big Books (ELA)

Objective: To identify the front, back, author,


illustrator, words and pictures in a book.
Goal: To understand the organization of print
and the lay out of books.
(K.RF.1)Demonstrate understanding of the organization and
basic features of print.
a. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page
by page.
b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written
language by specific sequences of letters.
c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in
print.
Instructional input: Teacher will read a big
book and have students identify the front
cover, back cover, author, illustrator, words
and pictures in a book. Teacher will continue to
read and show students that we read from left
to right, each word has a space in between,
and if there is more than one line we go back
to the left to start over.
Materials: Big book.
Checking for understanding: Does each
correctly point to the front, back, words,
pictures, and author/illustrator?
Differentiation: Depending on student,
asking for only one specific thing to identify.
