Cell membranes are selective permeable.

Their function is to control the

substances to pass through in or out of the membrane. When it has something that
passes through the membrane, this process is called membrane transport (Open Stax
College, 2000). The membrane transport has two types which are active transport and
passive transport. The active transport can not work without the energy and across the
membrane from low to high concentration gradient. On the other hands, passive
transport can work without the energy and across the membrane from high to low
concentration gradient. The passive transport has three types which are diffusion,
facilitated diffusion and osmosis. All of the have the same job to move until the two
solutions are having the equal concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water across
the membrane. Moreover, this process can move to the side with the higher solute
(Diffen LLC, n.d.). If the substance is Hypertonic (higher concentration gradient), then
the water will move into the substance and make them swell but if the substance is
hypotonic (lower concentration gradient), then the water will move out of the
substance and it will be shrunk.

In this experiment, we will soak the jelly and potato in the distilled water and
concentrated salt solution to find which one is hypertonic and hypotonic to the
solution. Also, put both of them in the empty beaker which is the control beaker. Mass
the volume of them to see the difference amount of number after one hour soaking it.
Then record the data and find the percentages change. This experiment will relate with
the osmosis which can make us more understand how this process works and know
the solution after putting the difference solute into difference solvent.
