Operating Instructions

1 Introduction
These operating instructions contain all the information required for the user to operate the
FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection and extinguishing control system and to understand all the
indications given by the panel when it detects a fire, prewarning or fault condition. It also explains the
messages shown on the LCD-display and indication of the LEDs on the front in response to the
various events in the system such as fire alarm, release of the extinguishing system and faults of the
panel and the external equipment connected to the panel.
The instructions also describe the reactions to all the events that occur, and how the system user is
required to intervene in each case, to silence the internal panel buzzer, to silence the external alarm
circuits and to reset the panel. A description of all operation functions available through the user menu
is given. But other functions available only to authorised service personnel are not described in this
manual.
A general description of the components used in the FAST2000Compact/2 is given in chapter two.
The rest of the manual mainly explains how the panel is operated and how it behaves when a fire is
detected and how the extinguishing release is handled. A brief description of the different in- and
outputs available is given in chapter 2.2.
The primary function of the FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection and release panel is to detect fires
and produce the required responses, like local alarm, calling the fire brigade and initiating the release
of the extinguishing system.

Auxiliary facilities are provided and these include:

Providing fault alarms
Event logging
Automatically produce printouts of an alarm or fault event (if a printer is connected)
Status information may be listed to the LCD display or the printer (if a printer is connected)

2.2.2 Control module, CM-32C/2

The CM-32C/2 is an intelligent independent module that handles all monitoring and control of the
FAST2000Compact/2; it is the main module in the system. The CM-32/2 uses a redundant two-wire
internal communication bus to communicate with other microprocessor based modules. The
communication speed is 9600 Baud. The communication bus is used to both receive system status
telegrams and to transmit control commands to other modules. The control module handles all the
common control and monitoring functions within the panel. This module manages all signals and items
of system information, and shows them on the display unit.
The functionality of the CM-32/2 module is very complex. Various interfaces are provided to connect
other modules and termination boards.

2.2.3 Communication termination board, CM-32CTCB2

The CM-32CTCB2 is the network motherboard and is used for communication, either between panels
or interfacing to other equipment. It is designed to be highly flexible. It's two communication channels
can be independently equipped with any of four interface modules RS422/RS485, RS232, Fibre optic
or 30mA.

2.2.4 CM-32CTCM422 RS422 termination board

The CM-32CTCM422 converts the logic levels of the CM-32's serial channels to RS422/RS485 levels.
The module can by jumpers be set up in a number of different RS422/RS485 modes. The module can
also by a jumper be set up to transfer a fire condition as a break on the RS422/RS485 line. The
communication interface is galvanic isolated from the rest of the FAST2000 system. Three LED's in
series with the isolating optocouplers indicates if there are activities on the RX, TX or RTS lines of the
interface.

2.2.5 CM-32CTCM232 RS232 termination board

The CM-32CTCM232 converts the logic levels of the CM-32's serial channels to RS232 levels. The
module can by a jumper be set up to transfer a fire condition as a break on the RS232 line. The
communication interface is galvanic isolated from the rest of the FAST2000 system. Four LED's in
series with the isolating optocouplers indicates if there are activity on the Rx, Tx , RTS or CTS lines of
the interface.

2.2.6 CM-32CTCM1 30mA termination board

The CM-32CTCM1 converts the logic levels of the CM-32's serial channels to Signalco 30mA levels.
The module contains a built in 30mA driver which can be enabled/disabled with a jumper. The module
can also be set up in monitor mode for supervising the 30mA communication loop, this feature can
also be enabled /disabled by a jumper. The communication interface and the 30mA driver is

galvanically isolated from the rest of the FAST2000 system Two LED's in series with the isolating
optocouplers indicates if there are activity on the Rx and Tx lines of the interface.

2.2.7 CM-32CTOPT1 Fibre optic termination board

The CM-32CTOPT1 converts the logic levels of the CM-32's serial channels to fibre optic signals. The
module can by jumpers be set up with one of three different driver currents to adjust for varying fibre
loss. The module can also by a jumper be set up to transfer a fire condition as a break on the fibre
optic cable. Since the transfer method is light the communication interface is inherently galvanic
isolated from the rest of the FAST2000 system. Two LED's indicate if there are activity on the RX and
TX of the interface.

2.2.8 Fire brigade terminal board, CM-32F

The CM-32F is the terminal board for connecting the fire brigade panel to the FAST 2000Compact/2.
It is equipped with an output to call the fire brigade (transmission device - TD), as well as all the inputs
and outputs for a fire brigade panel according DIN 14661. It is connected to the 26-core flat cable
connection of the CM-module.

2.2.9 Loop module, LM-32C

The loop module LM-32C is the processor card used for fire detection and extinguishing control. It is
designed for connection of two detection loops with up to 198 addresses on each loop (128 according
VdS). With a termination board LM-32DT connected, the loop module controls all functions of the
detection areas of these detectors. If a termination board LM-32ET is used, the loop module executes
all controls for this extinguishing area.
The signals that are processed by this module are sent to the CM-32C control module, to be shown as
individual or collective indications on the display unit. If the LM-32C is used as an extinguishing control
module, the status information about the extinguishing system is signalled on the display unit, in the
area reserved for freely programmable individual displays.

2.2.10 Detection module terminal board, LM-32DT

The LM-32DT is the terminal board for the LM-32C that is used for detection zones. The following
connections are provided: 2 loops, 2 signal transmitter circuits, and 3 inputs for freely programmable
primary lines from contacts that are to be monitored.

2.2.11 Extinguishing zone terminal board, LM-32ET

The LM-32ET is the extinguishing zone terminal board for the LM-32C loop module. The following
connections are provided: 2 loops, 2 alarm sounder circuits, 1 output for the section valve, and 1
output for the Flooding-/CO2-Stop valve. Six digital inputs are available on the LM-32ET, which are
freely programmable. A default function can be assigned to these inputs during commissioning. Refer
to the specific documentation for the installation. The default functions are:

2.2.12 Open-Collector-Output Card IO-32C

The IO32C is a open-collector output card designed for the FAST2000Compact/2 and provides 8
outputs. These outputs can be used to control separate realys. The IO-32C is controlled by the CM or
a LM-module.

2.2.13 RS232 Interface Card IM-32

The IM-32 is providing a serial RS232 interface, used for programming the panel, as well as for
connecting graphic displays or intelligent mimic panels. The card is connected to the system bus and
transmits the internal protocol of the panel to the connected device. The RS232 connector is galvanic
isolated from the internal supply of the panel. Optical indicators are signalling traffic on Rx and Tx.

2.2.14 Motherboard GP-32/2

The motherboard GP-32/2 provides five plug-in connectors SP1 to SP5, which can be equipped with
different modules. SP1 is reserved for the CM-32 module. The following modules can be used on the
connectors:
Connector SP1: Control Module CM-32C/2
Connector SP2 to SP4: LM-32C or IO-32C*
Connector SP5: LM-32C
* the IO-32C is to be connected to the LM-32C or CM-32C/II right or left of the IO-card by
means of DIP-switches located between the connectors
The connection from the plug-in cards to the respective terminal boards is made by means of flat
cables, connected to the 10- and 26-core flat cable connectors of the plug-in place. The termination
board for plug-in place SP-5 is integrated part of the motherboard. Terminals are provided on the left
hand side of the motherboard for connection of the loops, bell circuits and inputs belonging to the LM-
32C module in plug-in place SP5.
The monitoring circuits for power supply unit, battery and earth fault is located on the motherboard.
These circuits make sure, that if the power supply unit fails the supply is switched to the battery
without interruption and a mains fault is indicated.
In normal operation the battery is connected to the charger, so that the batterys voltage is maintained.
At regular intervals the battery is checked. The batteries test signal is controlled by the CM-32C. If the
battery fails the test, a battery fault signal is indicated.

To transmit the common alarm and fault signal to other locations two relays are provided on the
motherboard. The common alarm relay is triggered with the first alarm in the system and remains
active until the panel is reset. The common fault relay is provided as a fail-safe output (active in
normal mode). If a fault occurs the relay is deactivated and remains in that state until the panel is
reset. In addition a monitored fault output is provided, checking the transmission line for open and
short circuit.

2.3 Power supply

The fire detection system is supplied via power supply unit with power from the mains system. The
second source of power consists of the built-in standby batteries. Both power sources are connected
to the main board, which incorporates the monitoring circuits for the mains and battery supply. If one
of the two supplies fails, these circuits ensure an immediate switchover to the other supply (i.e. without
interruption), and a fault signal to this effect is displayed.

2.4 Detection Loops

The detection circuits of the FAST2000Compact/2 are configured as loops. Branch lines can be
connected to the loop at any place.
The System Sensor protocol is used on the detection loops of the FAST2000Compact/2, i.e. System
Sensor loop devices of series 200 and 500 are used. There are detectors (analogue sensors) and
input / output modules available. All devices to be used on the detection loop are equipped with an
address unit. Automatic detectors (sensors) are addressed in the address range from 1 to 99; non-
automatic detectors (manual call points, input modules and control modules) are addressed in the
range from 101 to 199. The address is selected by means of rotary decade switches. The selection
represents the two last digits of the device address.
An analogue detector transmits a signal to the control panel, which is proportional to the monitored fire
parameter. On change of this parameter the output signal of the detector also changes, e.g. if the
temperature is rising, the output signal is also rising.
The FAST2000Compact/2 is checking the addresses in succession. When the address is checked
the device transmits the analogue value of the sensor to the fire panel.
An analogue sensor makes no difference between normal and fire value. The trigger level for pre-
warning, fire and fault is provided by the FAST2000Compact/2. All values transmitted from the
sensor are evaluated by the panel and result in the respective mode: normal mode, fault, pre-warning
or alarm.
Both loops of the LM-32C module can handle up to 198 addresses. According VdS only 128
addresses are allowed.

3 Display and keypad

Alongside its various monitoring functions, the fire detection system has one overriding task:
To receive and process fire alarm signals.
The occurrence of a fire alarm has top priority, regardless of whether a fault signal is being displayed
or whether any test functions have been activated. An incoming fire alarm overwrites every other
process or operation that has already started.

3.1 Display
The indicators incorporated in the display unit comprise the plain text display, in combination with the
various LED indicators for system status and the individual displays (see Illustration 1).

3.1.1 Plain text display

The display unit includes an 8 x 40-character LCD display to show all signals or messages as plain
text. The background illumination is switched on automatically when a signal arrives, or when the
keypad is operated. The next section explains the various display messages corresponding to
different operating statuses.

yellow and one red LED. If an indicator is used as a detector zone indication, the red LED indicates
an alarm of the respective detection zone, and the yellow LED indicates a fault of that zone. The
indicators can also be used for indication of status signals of the extinguishing system or any other
signal.

3.1.3 Collective indicators to show the system status

This area of the display unit contains 16 status indicators with LEDs, designated as shown in
Illustration 2.

"POWER ON" LED

3.2.1 Authorisation levels

The various functions of the FAST 2000Compact/2 fire detection system must be operated on three
different levels. These authorisation levels can be reached via the keypad, in combination with the
relevant authorisation code. A fourth authorisation level for programming can only be reached with a
special programming device. This level is exclusively reserved for the manufacturer's specialist staff
in the factory.
Authorisation level 1
This level is always available without a special code. The permitted functions (as specified in EN
54-2) can be operated without entering an authorisation. These are: Buzzer Off, Lamp test and
scrolling of the display when more than two messages.
Authorisation level 2
After a user has entered the relevant code, he or she will reach this authorisation level, which
makes it possible to select the associated functions as specified in EN 54-2. The following
chapters describe the possible operation functions.

If no entry is made within about 20 seconds, the system will automatically switch back to
authorisation level 1.
Authorisation level 3
This level is reserved for authorised staff, and it can only be reached by entering the necessary
code. This manual does not show the functions that are possible at this level. Please refer to
installation and servicing instructions.

5 Fire alarms
5.1 Basic action
If a fire alarm is signalled to the panel by an external device (such as an automatic fire detector, a
push-button alarm, or a manual activator, etc), the system will react with various switching actions and
messages/signals, depending on how it is designed and programmed:
The "ALARM" LED lights up intermittently
The internal buzzer sounds intermittently
The common alarm relay is activated
The alarm circuits are activated
You will see this message in the display:

Fire ZXXXX.V 1/1

where:
XX = number of detection zone
V = virtual detector address if assigned
Text = Address point related customer text
There is also shown the number of different alarm signals that have been recognised. If a customer-
specific text has been stored for this zone, it will also be shown in the display.
The output to the transmission device is activated. The signal from the transmission device
causes the "TD TRIGGERED" LED to light up.
If no transmission device is connected, or if the TD is switched off or faulty, the "CALL FIRE
BRIGADE" LED is activated.
As well as these basic reactions, it is also possible (for example) to activate extinguishing
systems or relay contacts, depending on the design.

5.2 More than one fire alarm

If several fire alarms are recognised, the panel's reaction depends on what entries the user made after
the first alarm was recognised.
The display shows the first and last alarm signals. The display also shows how many alarm
signals are present. The scroll keys can used to check all the fire alarms stored in the
memory. A maximum of 50 fire alarm signals can be stored in the display's memory in this
way. The next fire alarm signal would overwrite the second oldest signal.

The internal buzzer sounds intermittently for every new fire alarm that is recognised, even if it
was previously switched off with the "BUZZER OFF" key.
The signal transmitter circuits are activated for every new fire alarm that is recognised, even if
they were already switched off with the "ACOUSTIC ON/OFF" key.
Any extinguishing system control devices are activated depending on the design and
programming.

5.3 Resetting the system after a fire alarm

Only authorised staff is allowed to reset the system after a fire alarm. This procedure should be
followed in this case:
Before resetting the fire alarm make sure, that the activated alarm and valve circuits are
disconnected. This avoids another release after reset.
Make sure that all the factors, which have produced a fire alarm, have been rectified or
worked through. For example, the temperature in the monitored zones must be within the
normal range, any broken glass panes in manual alarm pushbutton and manual activators
must be replaced, alarm push-button and manual activators must be unlocked, and so on.
The authorisation code for access level 2 must be entered.
The Reset key can then be pressed, and the system will be reset.
Wait 30 seconds to check if an alarm is received again from the devices that have been in
alarm before. If no alarm is received continue, otherwise check the reason for the alarm.
Once this has been done, all the elements that have been switched off can be switched back
on again. "Resetting" the system does not mean that any switched-off devices or control
circuits are automatically switched on again.

5.4 Other signals in case of a fire alarm

The FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection system not only has a memory for alarm signals, but also a
pre-warning memory and another memory for fault signals. If a fire alarm is recognised, the display will
only show the fire alarm signal. Nevertheless, the system recognises other incoming signals and
stores them.
A message F2=More messages is shown on the display. Pressing F2 changes to the next lower
message buffert.

6 Prewarning
6.1 Basic action
The panel recognises an prewarning whenever an address point of a detection loop signals a value
which is larger than the value for the normal status but smaller than the actual alarm value. Note that
the pre-warning is hidden for detectors, which are in test mode, and that there is no pre-warning
evaluation for pushbutton alarms, manual activators, monitoring or control modules.
There are two important reasons why the pre-warning technology is used:

Version 4.05 TSM/Kli 05.03.2008 Page: 30

Copyright tyco Safety Products
FAST 2000Compact-/2
Operating Instructions

1. Contamination, which could steer the detector towards a false alarm, is recognised in good
time. The detector can be cleaned or replaced before a false alarm occurs.
2. Slowly increasing smoke densities (and the damaging fires associated with them) are
recognised earlier.
Essentially, it can be said that the prewarning feature is very useful to operators because it helps them
to 'tread the tightrope' between false alarms and late detection.
If the pre-warning is not desired, the panel can be programmed to suppress pre-warnings.
The panel's reactions to prewarnings are similar to those for a real fire alarm. The main difference is
that the output to the transmission device, the common alarm relay and the alarm circuits are not
activated. Likewise, extinguishing systems are not activated for an pre-warning alarm.
However:
The "ALARM" LED lights up intermittently.
The internal buzzer sounds intermittently.
You will see this message in the display:
Prewarning LM.A L.DD TYP MGXXXX 1/1
Text

A = LM-Module address V = virtual detector address

L = loop number X = number of the zone
D = detector address (hardware) T = detector type

Note that a pre-warning signal has lower priority than a fire alarm signal, but higher priority than a fault
signal. This means that a pre-warning signal is overwritten by a fire alarm, but a pre-warning
overwrites a fault signal.

6.2 More than one Pre-warning

If several prewarnings are recognised, the panel's reaction depends on the entries which the user
made after the first pre-waning alarm was recognised.
The display shows the first two and the last pre-warning signal that was recognised.
You can use the scroll keys to view all the prewarnings. A maximum of 50 prewarnings can be
stored and viewed.
The internal buzzer sounds intermittently every time a new pre-warning is recognised.

6.3 Resetting the system after a Pre-warning

Only authorised staff is allowed to reset the system after a pre-warning. This procedure should be
followed in this case:
You must ensure that all the pre-warning signals have been recognised and worked through.
All factors, which could result in another alarm, must be eliminated (for example, by replacing
contaminated detectors).
The authorisation code for access level 2 must be entered.
The Reset key can then be pressed, and the system will be reset.
However, "resetting" the system does not mean that any switched-off devices or control circuits are
automatically switched on again, and any parts of the system, which are in test mode, will remain in
this mode.

6.4 Other signals in case of a Pre-warning

The FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection system not only has a memory for pre-warning signals, but
also a alarm memory and another memory for fault signals. If a pre-warning is recognised, this signal
is shown in the display. All other incoming signals with lower priority are processed and stored, but not
shown in the display. Signals with higher priority will overwrite the pre-warning signal, but all other
messages can be read in the history buffer (refer to 4.4.4). If no entry on the keypad is made for about
20 seconds, the display will automatically show the last pre-warning alarm signal.

7 Fault signals
7.1 Basic action
If the FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection system has recognised a fault signal, various displays and
switching actions are activated depending on the design and programming:
The yellow "FAULT" LED on control module CM-32 lights up intermittently.
The internal buzzer sounds continuously.
The system's fault output is activated.
The display shows the fault signal as plain text and also shows how many faults the
system has recognised.

7.2 More than one fault signal

If several fault signals are recognised, the display will show the last signal that was recognised. You
can also see how many fault signals are present. A maximum of 50 faults are saved in the fault
memory. You can use the scroll keys to view all the faults. A maximum of 50 prewarnings can be
stored and viewed. If no key is pressed within about 20 seconds, the display will automatically show
the last fault signal that was recognised. The internal buzzer sounds continuously for each new fault
signal that arrives.

7.3 Resetting
Only authorised staff is allowed to reset the system after a fault signal. This procedure should be
followed in this case:
All the fault signals must have been worked through and the faults must have been rectified. If
necessary, the maintenance service of the installer of the system must be notified.
Enter the authorisation code for access level 2.
Press the Reset key and the system will be reset.
All elements or sub-zones that were in test mode or were switched off will retain this status.
Any faults that have not been rectified will be recognised by the system as new fault signals.

7.4 Description of various fault signals

For all the faults described below, the internal buzzer sounds continuously, the fault LEDs on the
relevant modules light up intermittently, the fault output is activated and a display message appears.
The display messages are described in detail below.

7.4.1 Open Circuit / Short Circuit of Inputs

An open circuit or short circuit of an input is shown in the display as follows:

Open circuit LM.X input Y 1/3

Open circuit LM.X input Y 1/3

Short circuit LM.X input Y 2/3

where: X = address of the loop module

Y = number of the input of the loop module
Similar messages appear in the display for open circuits on other monitored lines.

7.4.2 Open Circuit / Short Circuit of Outputs

A short circuit signal is shown in the display as follows:

Open circuit LM.X output no Y 1/3

Open circuit LM.X output no Y 1/3

Short circuit LM.X output no Y 2/3

where: X = address of the loop module

Y = number of the output of the loop module

7.4.3 Detector fault

If an address is missing on a loop, this message appears:
Detector FAULT LM.A L.DD TYP MGXXXX Y/ZZ
Text
A = LM-Module address
Detector FAULT LM.A L.DD TYP MGXXXX 1/ZZ
Text L = Loop number
Detector FAULT LM.A L.DD TYP MGXXXX 2/ZZ
Text D = Detector number
Text = customer
text
Where: YY = Number of the fault signal (e.g. 1 for the first fault recognised, etc.)
ZZ = Total of all fault signals

7.4.4 Short to earth

If a short to earth is recognised, the display shows this message:

Earth FAULT CM.1 1/1

No precise information is given about the short to earth signal: typically, a short to earth is caused by:
a connection between the positive or negative line of a detection loop and earth.
a connection between the activation / alarm circuits and earth.
a connection between +24 V or 0 V of the 24 V DC outputs with earth.

7.4.5 Fault on the voltage converter module, PM-32

Module PM-32 has a DC-DC converter, which reduces the internal operating voltage from 24V DC to
8V DC. If this converter fails, the display shows this message:

PM32 8V FAULT CM.1 1/1

Version 4.05 TSM/Kli 05.03.2008 Page: 3

7.4.6 Battery fault

A battery fault is present if the battery voltage falls below a pre-specified value of 24 V DC. You will
see this message in the display:

Battery FAULT CM.1 1/1

The mains/battery and fault LED's will also light up.

7.4.7 Low voltage switch-off

The FAST2000Compact/2 fire detection system has a relay which disconnects the battery from the
system if the battery voltage falls below a pre-specified value of 21 V DC. This means that the system
is completely switched off if there is a mains failure and if the battery voltage drops.
Important: From this time onwards, the entire fire protection installation, including the extinguishing
system, is no longer capable of functioning. Other suitable fire protection precautions must be set up
immediately.
After the panel has been switched off by the low voltage protection, the panel must be powered up by
trained personal or by the installers service. When powering up the connected extinguishing systems
and transmission lines must be secured.

7.4.8 Mains fault

This fault signal is recognised if the power unit is no longer supplying the required operating voltage of
24 V DC. You will see this message in the display:

Mains FAULT CM.1 1/1

The mains/battery and fault LED's will also light up.

The panel's function is automatically maintained for the pre-specified period thanks to the built-in
standby power batteries.

7.4.9 RAM, ROM, EPROM and EEPROM Checksum fault message

If the system detects a fault in the RAM area, the display shows this message:

EEPROM CHECKSUM FAULT TT.XX 1/1

where: TTTT = type of the module that is causing the fault.

XX = System address of the module
EPROM and EEPROM faults are shown in a similar way.
Each of these messages means that the data stored in the areas concerned cannot be read perfectly,
or have been destroyed.

7.4.10 Initialisation fault

During normal operation, the system is continuously checked to ensure that it is operating perfectly. If
a checking cycle reveals that a module has not been initialised, the display will show this message:

NIT NOT INITIATED TT.XX 1/1

In this case, the letters have the

same meanings as in the fault message in 7.4.8.

7.4.11 Module fault

During normal operation, the system is continuously checked to ensure that it is operating perfectly. If
a checking cycle reveals that a module address is missing, the display will show this message:

MODULE FAULT TT.XX 1/1

In this case, the letters have the same meanings as in the fault message in 7.4.8.

7.4.12 Total system failure

A total system failure means that no messages or displays can be shown. In this case, the installers
service staff must be informed immediately.

Attention: If a Stop-Button (input 5 on LM-Module) is used in

an extinguishing system the following is to be observed:

A fault (short circuit or open circuit) on the line to the stop button
(input 5 of the LM-module) prevents releasing of the extinguishing
system. This is stipulated by the regulations for gas-extinguishing
