Day 4

Monday: 3/6/17
Objective:
Students will determine the major characteristics of the sun, moon, and earth, including
approximate size, color, age, and surface conditions. Students will start to understand
the difference between the terms rotate and revolve and the effect of each of these
phenomena on earth.
Standard (GLCE):
E.ST.04.11 Identify the sun and moon as common objects in the sky.
E.ST.04.12 Compare and contrast the characteristics of the sun, moon, and earth
including relative distances and abilities to support earth.
Materials:

T-Chart rotations vs revolution
Flashlight for simulation
Space journal
Science notebooks
Instruction: 1:00-2:30
1.
Show Earth revolution and rotation video (TES link above)
Have students write in their science notebook the difference between rotation and
revolution using the t-chart made
Discuss how the rotation and revolution of earth affect us differently as humans
on earth
Have one student come up to the room and show rotation using the globe, have
another show revolution
What would earths rotation mean for us?
What would the revolution mean for us?
Time: 20 minutes
2.
Pass out students space journals
Have them think about the question why do we have day and night
Discuss with their table groups based on what theyve learned about revolution
and rotation why they believe that there is day and night on earth
Time: 5 minutes
3.
Have students stand and do simulation of them being the earth and you as the
teacher the sun. (TES Link)
Show the rest of the TES information (picture and video) of why we have day and
night
Discuss
Use the globe and flashlight to talk do a simulation of day and night. (one person
is the sun in the middle, one person the globe. Rotate the globe and have it also
revolve)
Time: 30 minutes
4.
Have students fill out their space journals: why is their day and night?
Time: 15 minutes
