Factory Design Suite 2012

This session covers the workflow and benefits of Autodesk Factory Design Suite 2012.

Analyze Factory Material Flow

Demonstration Guidelines

Analyze Factory Material Flow

In this demonstration, you use factory specific functionality added to AutoCAD to optimize a current 2D layout to improve
how material flows through the machining and assembly line.

1. In AutoCAD Architecture, open 2. Ensure the Material Flow Browser and Factory Object
\ACAD\1_2012_FDS_Demo_ACAD_Material_Flow_Analysis. Properties palettes are displayed. If they are not, then on the
Factory tab, Tools panel:

Click Palettes > Material Flow.

Click Palettes > Properties.
3. In the Material Flow Browser palette: 6. Review the total time and distance for the current
configuration.
Click the Routings tab.
Select Job: 2.0 L head.

7. In canvas, use the cursor as a visual pointer and trace the

arrows from the start to the end. Notice how the flow
reverses direction in a couple areas.
8. Improve the material flow by moving the location of the final
storage racks. To do this, do the following:

Start the Move command.

Use window selection to select the geometry in the
last operation station.
Move the selected geometry to the approximate
location as shown.

4. In the Factory Object Properties palette, under Properties,

review the current manufacturing values for Part Quantity
and Batch Size for this production line.

9. Review the total time and distance for the current

configuration. Note: Because the move of the storage was an
approximate location, your total time and travel distance will
very slightly from what is shown here.

5. On the Factory tab, Analysis panel, click Transportation.

10. Begin to move the leak testing station from the top right to 14. In the Factory Object Properties palette, under Properties, in
the location where the storage racks where just moved from: the Part Quantity field, enter 300.

Start the Move command.

Use window selection to select the geometry that
has the number 2 balloon pointing to it.

15. In the Material Flow Browser palette, select Operation :

storage in.
11. Move the selected geometry to create the approximate
results as shown.

16. In the Factory Object Properties palette, under Operation

Connection, in the Transportation Type list, select Conveyor.

12. Review the total time and distance for the current
configuration.

13. In canvas, use the cursor as a visual pointer and trace the
arrows from the start to the end.
17. Repeat the process to set the transportation types as follows: 22. To update the processing time for this machine, in the
Factory Object Properties palette, under Properties, in the
Processing Time field, enter 3.
Operation : Head Rough Machining = Conveyor
Operation : Valve Seat Machining = ForkTruck
Operation : Exhaust / intake machining = Conveyor
Operation : Valve Seat Machining = Conveyor
Operation : Clean = Conveyor
Operation : Coating application = ForkTruck
Operation : leak testing = Conveyor
Operation : assemble 4 CYL = Conveyor

18. Review the total time and distance for the current
configuration.

23. Review the results of the change. Notice the percentage of

use value on the dashboard decreased and the callout for
this operation turned from red to green.
19. On the Factory tab, Analysis panel, click Machine.
20. To add a meter to the dashboard for specific operations, in
canvas:

Right-click callout 2. Click Optimization > Add

Meter to Dashboard.
Right-click callout 1. Click Optimization > Add
Meter to Dashboard. 24. To update the processing time for assembly:

In the Material Flow Browser palette, select

Operation : assemble 4 CYL.
In the Factory Object Properties palette, under
Properties, in the Processing Time field, enter 4.

21. In the Material Flow Browser palette, select the second listed
Operation : Valve Seat Machining as shown.
25. Review the results of the change. Notice the percentage of
use value on the dashboard decreased and the callout for
this operation turned from red to green.

26. The operations for material transportation, processing, and

testing are now optimized.
2D Factory Layout

2D Factory Layout
In this demonstration, you modify the existing factory floor layout by replacing the storage equipment and the equipment
in a CNC machining area. You also send the 2D layout to Autodesk Inventor in preparation of creating the layout in 3D.

2D Factory Layout
1. Open .\ACAD\2_2012_FDS_ACAD_Factory_Layout.dwg. 3. To review saved layer states and set up for placing new
equipment, on the Home tab, Layers panel, Layer States
list:

Select 2 Remove Machines. Review the

drawing.
Select 3 New Machines. Review the drawing.
Select 4 Inventor Layout.

2. Ensure the Asset Browser palette is displayed. If it is not,

then on the Factory tab, Tools panel, click Palettes >
Asset Browser.
4. In the Asset Browser palette search field, enter rack. 6. To begin to add a custom machining center to the
drawing:

In the Asset Browser palette, click Folder Up.

Double-click the folder User Assets.

On the Suite Workflow panel, click Send To
Inventor.
Note: Be prepared to discuss how during this
import, multiple things are occurring to make it
more efficient for them to create the 3D layout
of their design.

10. Now that the 2D layout is in Autodesk Inventor, you are

ready to create the assembly in 3D using the factory tools
inside Inventor.
