Level Educational Summit 2011 on
the theme Educational Reformation
in Schools Today for Better
Tomorrow. It was organized and
hosted by St. Johns International
Residential School, Chennai in
commemoration of Teachers Day
Celebration. The morning air was
filled with galaxy of special invitees,
thronged to feed their minds with
educational thoughts. The function
started on a traditional note with
Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by Dr.
R. Kishore Kumar, who elaborated on
the very intention of the occasion.
A prayer song was rendered by

sense that we are the instruments
in the hands of our master creator.

a theme Schooling is Divine. This annual report is a mirror of the past And a
vision for the future. A reminder of things past of success, hopes and dreams

It was an exciting journey 2011 with an amorphous activities round the year.
Exuberant guest lectures, club activities, seminars workshops made us to
realize the potentials of our students. Providing a connected and forward
looking curriculum to devlop competence helped for value added outcomes.
Teachers also made extra effort in the classroom experience.
As we continue our journey towards excellence, it is my hope and desire

SJIRS staff choir in full enthusiasm presented

on June 10, 1968 when the first bell of St. Johns
was rung by Rev. Miller in a thatched building at
Mandaveli. From time to time, St. Johns has been
leaping to greater heights.
a special song that melodiously told the legendary
story of Bell day following which the SJA staff
presented a skit titled Genesis that took us back
in time depicting how the vision about St. Johns
was conceived in the mind of our founder.
Dr. Sampath Samraj led us into a time of praise
and worship followed by a simple but powerful
message highlighting the importance of education
with a Biblical touch and the qualities of our
founder. He fondly recollected his association with
our founder, Dr.G.Rajkumar and his explicit humble
attitude. He said, Dr. Rajkumar was moved by
compassion and love and rendered a helping
hand to those in need just as Jesus was moved
with compassion when he saw the huge crowd
of people. The program was indeed wholesome
giving the right lead for the new academic year.
It not just reminded us about the past but it
did drive hard within us the long sighted vision of

A tag of importance is attached to the
Bell Day. It marks the commencement of a
golden era in the domain of school education.
Giving heed to the divine calling, a step of
faith taken by our beloved founder, Bishop
Rajkumar has planted a deep rooted and
flourishing dynasty of St.Johns. It all started

SJIRS gathered at Zion Auditorium for a meaningful
observance of Bell day. Dr. Sampath Samraj, Vice
Principal of Pachayappas College was the Chief
Guest for the afternoon. Attaching all reverence,
the program started off with a prayer song that
was rendered by the SJIRS staff choir. Our Senior
Principal, Dr. R. Kishore Kumar welcomed the
gathering and shared the significance of Bell day.
He said, Bell day is not a calendar day to observe,
not a celebration nor a concept. It is a feeling that
can only be felt,

Prof. S. Sathish, former Vice-
chancellor of University of Madras,
elaborated the gathering on the
topic, Quality Emphasis and Quality
Control in School Education. He
called Quality education as life itself,
if an education could make a positive
change in a students life, then that
education is a quality education,
which will develop confidence to face
the world or the society. According
to him, quality education is not
just merely academics alone; it is
measuring co-scholastic areas too.
He also remained us that failure is
the stepping-stone to success.
In his presidential address Dr. R.

Force and Rescue Services sowed
the seeds for the healthy educational
life style. He said Guru (teachers)
are the one who leads children from
darkness to light and have to be
respected above all. In addition, he
exhorted the gathering to inculcate
the teacher community to give the
right kind of inputs, like true values
and guidance to the children. He
highlighted the fact that the time is
a finite source and has to be used
resourcefully. He went to the extent
of saying that the cost of a bad
teacher is more than the cost of a
good teacher. Teachers should always
be looked after well. He added that
corruption is like two-way traffic. in
the same way no society can progress
without good education. At the same
time, education has to take up the
lead to bring remarkable changes in
the society, which may lead to the
progress and welfare of the society.
Time came for the Madras high
court justice D. Jothimani, Honble
judge, not to offer his judgement
but to deliver his Teachers Day
message. He looks so unassuming
but after listening to him for a few
minutes, we were fully convinced
why judges are so. What touched
most teachers was when he said that
the teachers community should be
respected and predicted that India
will become a super power in near
future. He also said that man is
made as a criminal, but he never was
born as a criminal. Though he never
canvassed the prospects of law, he
enabled the gathering to look at it as
a profession.
Mr. Ashish Rajpal, Co-Founder and

quality in education is very important.
Education should have an impact
on society but it works vice versa in

Leaders SJIRS STUDENT COUNCIL
T he solemn occasion, wherein
students were awarded their
prestigious portfolios, the Student
Council inauguration of St.Johns
International Residential School was
held on 24.06.2011 at the Zion
Auditorium. The occasion was held
in the afternoon and was presided
by Mr. P. Michael Vedha Sironmony,
IAS as the Chief Guest and Rev.
Dr. T. Devaputhiran as the Guest of
Honour who graced the occasion and
encouraged the students to take up
their responsibility seriously.
The audience comprised all
the students of Class XI and XII,
teachers and supervisory heads. The
Class XI students were permitted to
witness this occasion in an attempt
to instill the will and determination
of becoming the next generation
council members.

is a product of education. He gave
a new dimension to the Teaching
pedagogy by suggesting agriculture
in the curriculum and weighing
scholastic and co-scholastic activities
of the students Dont teach them
to draw, but teach them to identity

The thrilling ambience spread

council members were then called
to receive their badges according to
their portfolios and certificates were

a medal, silk shawl, memento,
citation and a jewel case containing
cash award. Their smiles mean a
lot when they received the prize.

work at school. All sessions were
very encouraging, motivating and
inspirational overall education was
promoted through this program.
Thus, the entire program was very
absorbing and encouraging to all
the participants. The curtains were
rolled down after Dr. Mirasu David,
Principal of SJA rendered the vote of
thanks, which was followed by the
sumptuous lunch and was served
with warmth. The day ended with a
ray of hope and happiness having
bloomed in every heart to celebrate
the teachers day in true spirit.

MATHS LABORATORY
Mathematics Lab at SJIRS is an
extension of skills and also helps to
involve young minds to understand
the concepts in a better way. This
lab is a major factor in improving our
success rates and more important,
improving student learning. It was
ideated to reduce anxiety that students
have towards the subject. This is one
of the efforts to change the classroom
atmosphere and make it more child
friendly by introducing educational
aids. When students handle the kits
and learn by doing, it helps them
understand the concepts easier and
makes learning math enjoyable. It also
helps to reduce the aversion to the
subject.
The laboratory approach allows pupils
to setup Mathematical experiments,
for the purpose of discovering some
mathematical principle, pattern or
received by one and all. The guest
of honour, Rev. Dr. T. Devaputhiran
was requested to pray over the newly
elected council members and this
inspired the council members to put
in their best efforts.
Finally, we had our ever dynamic
Senior Principal, Dr. Kishore Kumar
who threw light into the seriousness
of the occasion and the key to
development of a dynamic leader. He
pointed out that the student council
is an initiative to develop the leader
within starting at the grass root level.
The council members were seated
with a mixed feeling of pride and the
thoughts of the promises to keep and
the task ahead. Thus, the Inaugural

Education has mainly two aspects, the cultured
aspect which makes a person grow and the
productive aspect which makes a person to do
things. So both are essential.
Activity
The Commerce club of SJIRS had conducted
its first club activity on 25th November 2011 for
the Students of Group A belonging to Classes XI
The inter house competition was conducted
in the form of a debate on the topic Women
Entrepreneurs are more enterprising than
their male counterparts.
Each house was represented by two students
for which one student spoke for the topic and
another spoke against the topic. Each student
was given 5-10 minutes to present and give
their views related to their respective topic.
Students were highly informative and convincing.
Their rhetoric was impressive. Rebuttal session was
the most interesting part of the debate. Modulation

The school library fulfils these functions by
developing policies and services, selecting and
acquiring resources, providing physical and

biographies and history books.
Our library is situated in the center of our
School, and has a seating capacity of approximately
56 students and caters to the needs of students
from classes VI to XII. Each class and section has
a library period once a week, where they come
and experience a brief respite from the stress of
concentrating and listening to lectures on various
academic subjects. During week, class 11 and 12
has access to the Library and many students take
reference books for their different subjects.
Magazines and periodicals on politics, sports,
and world events are all available in the library,
which help the students to expand their knowledge
on current events. Books are lent to boys for a period
of one week. Our teachers too have access to the
library and are allowed to use books for reference,
ranging from encyclopedias to books on specialized
subjects and topics.
In Conclusion, librarians would like to pay a
gratitude to the creativity and dedication of our
School Senior principal Dr. R.Kishore Kumar who has
a vision to take SJIRS to even greater heights, and
one day SJIRS Library will be further equipped so as
to take a leading role in helping students of the 21st
century to quench their thirst for knowledge and

Asset Workshop which was held on 17.09.2011.
It was very useful for primary level students. It was
like a comprehensive program for primary schools
that builds a strong foundation of concepts. It
uses experimental and research based methods
to ensure that all children understand all concepts
at school with a sound understanding of concepts,
an ability to express the views.
As part of the Mindspark program, the team
trains teachers and tutors on innovative teaching
methods. Mindspark also provides them with
practical tools and research based materials to
teach each topic. The coverage of topics in the
program is inline with the requirements of the
National Curriculum frame work. This tool is not
an additional program or syllabus that needs to
be implemented beyond class hours. It is way of
teaching that blends with the day to day teaching
as part of the academic plan of the school. It can
be of help to strengthen concepts by connections
to real life situations and experiences, develops
problem solving abilities and creates love far
mathematics.

day when children all over the country
are pampered with goodies. From the
childs point of view, the best thing
perhaps is that it is a special day at
school - But what is that the school
offers to these future makers on the
Childrens Day.
Most schools have cultural
programs on this day, with the
students managing the entire
proceedings for the day. All over the
country, various cultural, social, and
even corporate, institutions conduct
competitions for children. There are
also community activities with stress
on childrens involvement but the Art
Education Department of SJIRS had a
meaningful and a thought provoking
childrens day celebration at SJIRS
campus.

What an esoteric and thrilling idea urging you to say I have been to
India especially the surreal experience with the glorious sunrises
and sunsets, sun drenched days and frosty nights metamorphosing an
ordinary day into an unforgettable time. It was a perfect time to explore
the slopes and resorts of our undulating land that you are best rewarded
with its impressive tourism.
During its Marathon trip during the academic year 2011-2012 at SJIRS,
The Department of Social Science sampled the delights of India through
its Group B Club Activity titled Incredible India. All the four houses
conveyed a hearty scrumptious presentation by presenting a thrilling as
well as breath taking performance. The Green House emerged as the
winners. Followed by the Red House as Second, Blue House as Third
and. Yellow House as Fourth.
All the four houses unraveled the strangest mysteries of India and also
its unique geological wonders which helped all of us to experience the
magic of nature and also the resplendent beauty of India. The flavorsome
performances at the Hebron Hall ended in the most rewarding way by
highlighting the immense beauty of India.
8th SEPTEMBER 2011 - International Literacy Day - This very important
day was observed by the Language Department of SJIRS.
September 8th was proclaimed, International Literacy Day by UNESCO on
November 17th 1965. It was celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the
importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international
community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations
take place around the world. Some 776 million adults lack minimum literacy
skills; one in five adults is still not literate and 2/3 of them are women;
75 million children are out - of - school and many more attend irregularly
or drop out. To raise public awareness of the extraordinary value of the
written word and of the necessity to promote a literate society, some very
prominent writers are supporting UNESCO through the writers for Literacy
Initiative. Next to writers engagement, there are various companies and
charity organizations that support the fight against illiteracy. International
Literacy Day also signifies the recognition of the country to strive towards
total and complete literacy for the nation.

and hence the quality of our lives. Science
has revolutionized changes in health, nutrition,
communication, etc. The role of science promises
to be still greater in the future.
On the other side, humanity is confronted with
global issues and concern climate change and
environmental degradation. All these are provoked
by the mismanagement of natural resources
or unsustainable production and consumption
patterns. We cannot resolve these problems
without the correct and timely use of science in
the future.
In this line of thought, we at SJIRS try to provide
an exposure to the leaders of tomorrow to aquire
scientific temper and hence have scientific bent of
mind to solve the global problems through science.
This is initiated through our SJIRS Science Club.

technological advancements, the question that
arises is how eco-friendly these technologies are.
The topic chosen for the model making competition
was a very apt and relevant one. Students from
each house did extensive preparation for making
the model. All the four houses proudly displayed
in their models in the Physics laboratory students
brought into light various innovative technologies
through their model like the twilight system and
various green technologies. All the participants
had really put in their efforts in making the model
making competition a highly competitive one.

eruption of volcanoes, tsunamis remit us about the
power of nature. We do not have a direct controlling
hand over them.
Miming is basically like a sandwitch between
knowledge and creativity. An increased awareness
about these natural disasters will atleast make us
prepared to face it. Students performed mime on
various natural diasters like earthquake, tsunami,
flood and drought. They conveyed a very strong
message that human intervention with nature
should be minimized to reduce the wealth that
nature brings in and to make the world a lovely
place to live.

of gaints. The Quiz was dedicated to some of
those gaints who shaped world history not by brutal
force, but by sheer genium. The Quiz also covered
environment related issues. A growing awareness
about our environment and environment related
issues is the need of the hour. Specially it is
important that young students are aware of the
environment we live in and a sense of responsibility
to protect the environment has to be instilled as
they are the young guardians of mother earth.
At SJIRS, we believe that bookish knowledge
alone will not take students to great heights. It is
how much one knows out of the textbook and the
knowledge that one aquires through reading other
books, magazines and other informative sources
will give the individual a cutting edge over others.
The motive behind conducting the quiz for our young
students was met. The participants enthusiastically
took part and answered spontaneously which
showed their will preparedness and the extra
efforts they had put into it.
To learn science is to do science, there is no
other way of learning science said Dr. D.S.Kothari,
so whatever information or ideas we import through
regular classroom teaching, science cannot be
restricted to that alone. To foster creativity in young
minds, we have gone one step ahead and have
provided such learning platforms through science
club activities.

I mmense Founders Day celebration started with
a prayer song Shout to the North and south by
SJIRS choir at 10:40 am followed by Bible reading
by Mr. Laly Christopher, St.Johns Matriculation
School, Mandaveli. The programme continued with
a powerful and deep prayer by Ms. Rose Christine of
English Dept, SJIRS.
The programme was not just celebration of
the founders day but also shared the special
glory of inauguration of the St.Johns Rajkumars
Foundation.
At 10:55 a.m. our Senior Principal
extended his warm welcome to the Principals,
Supervisory heads, teachers and counsel
members and on and all present attended
the celebration also extended his special
welcome to our honorable Chief Guest
Dr.John Solomon and Mrs. Shanthi John
Solomon with a standing ovation from the
crowd. Senior Principal Dr. Kishore Kumar also
added that Dr. Rajkumar was a successful
man; success for him was an achievement
and not mere luck, achievement through his
positive attitude.

Foundation was introduced
by our Senior Principal. Aim of the
foundation was to establish small schools in all
rural villages of Tamilnadu and to ensure quality
education in villages. St.Rajkumars foundation
is first going to initiate his first step of school at
Dr. Rajkumars native sooner. Senior principal
also expressed one of his dreams as making
St.Johns Foundation as the best institution for
spreading education.

namely SJA, SJA Annex, SJIRS, St.Johns

SJIRS Cricket Stadium on 26th January,
2012 from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. Thanks to

The events were so planned that every student
of Std. IV to VI could participate with ease and
enthusiasm. There was the spirit of joy more than

and ended with the National Anthem sung by the
Junior Choir students. The welcome address, the
hoisting of the flag, the compere, announcements,

the tug gave in to the stress and broke in two

that brought tumultuous cheers to the ground! Not
many will forget this scene soon.

year 2011-2012 took place on
29.07.2011. This inter house club

event started off with the prayer song

On 13th August 2011, the
department of Mathematics was
highly commended and appreciated
for its excellence in enriching the
young minds in Mathematics and
developing interest in various field
of Mathematics.
The program began with a
welcome address by Mr. Jagadesan
Secretary, Ramanujam Academy of
Maths Talent. It was then followed
by keynote address from Mr.
P.S. Raghavan, a retired IAS
officer. In his keynote address
he emphasized the importance
of seven golden qualities:
1) Sensitivity 2) Empathy
3) Responsiveness 4) Value
5) Initiative 6) Commitment
7) Efficiency. He abbreviated the
word SERVICE with the above
seven qualities, which was his
importance throughout the
speech.

GROUP - C
The Mathematics club activity
for Group - C (classes VII & VIII) was
conducted on 18th January 2012.
Though it was the last club activity
by our club it was not the least. The
activity was a debate on the topic
ROLE OF LABORATORY IN LEARNING
MATHEMATICS and it was very
memorable. In the beginning everyone
had a dilemma whether the students
of class (VII& VIII) could debate.,but
after the proqrarnme the confusion
was broken and the audience had
a nice time. Two houses spoke on
merits of laboratory and two houses
spoke on demerits of laboratory in
learning mathematics.
The speakers were very strong
in their arguments irrespective
of merits or demerits they spoke.
Each participant spoke for 5
minutes in the first round, where
they shared their individual
points with practical examples
in their own perspectives. It is very
usual that always in a debate the
speakers will have enough points
when they speak for the topic, but
astonishingly the speakers who spoke

the opponents. The debate came
to an end when one of the speaker
proved the importance of laboratoryu
by saying that St.johns would not
construct anything which is of no
use.
The results were announced by
the Vice Principal (Executive), Mrs.
Elizebeth Manonmani Edwin after
her presidential address, where she
commented about the awesome
performance of the vibrant speakers
of class VII & VIII.

On 4.11.2011 the Maths Club
activity for Group- D took place in

Workshop for
SocialScience
Teachers
Chennai Sahodaya school arranged
a one day workshop for primary
and middle school social science
teachers, on 18.11.2011 at Hindu
Senior Secondary school, Triplicane,
Chennai.
Mrs. Celin Josephin and Ms. Muthu-
kumari of Social Science department
attended the one day workshop. It was
a very useful session to clarity doubts
about CCE. It was a very informative
session.
Mrs. Padmini Sriraman, Principal of
Hindu Senior Secondary school was a
resource person who explained about
CCE in CBSE schools. She explained
that how would CCE helps to reduce
stress and anxiety among children.
The explanation of how to judge
the children in all their aspects, she
advised the teachers to give a check
list to the children of how they are
evaluated.
She focused mainly about how to
produce a high-quality project. She
clearly described the basic qualities
for a good project such as: Backward
Design process, Plan the assessment,
Map the project, Managing the
process and Skill based project
She inculcated about the role of
teachers and the importance of being
the best teacher. She quoted as: If
our boss makes a mistake, It is a new
idea. If a teacher makes a mistake, It
is just a mistake.
She expressed that teachers cannot do
a good judgement, so don't label the
child and frame a mindset. Teacher
should not control the children but
should manage the children, and
motivate to cultivate a good attitude
towards learning to become all
rounder.
The five points, Mrs. Padmini Sriraman
touched upon are: Communication
Skill, Inter personal skill, Creative
thinking, SelfAwareness and
Problem solving skill. This session
ended at 1.30 p.m.

SJIRS CITY OUT
TRIP TO
It was a beautiful evening as we landed
at Houston on May 18th 2011 to start our
journey of educational tour. Checked in the
hotel and finished our Dinner.
The hotel stay was well arranged. Children
were happy to think of their experience of
going to space centers and other notable
places in Houston.
We had a slight change in our 2 day
schedule due to the non availability of the
divers for the neutro buoyancy lab. We
did shopping at some of the outlets in the
morning, had a Mexican lunch and headed
towards the NASA space centre.
There were two sessions. First session
children were made to do solar robots with
given low cost aids within a specific budget,
followed by detail session of the fire breakouts
problems in space shuttles and methods to
handle them. We had homemade Indian
cuisine for dinner.
Next day was wonderful with lot of
activities. We started the day by visiting Neutro
Buoyancy Lab a place where Astronauts
are trained for zero gravity situations under
water. It is the worlds largest swimming pool
and we saw the astronauts live in the training
session. From the neutron buoyancy lab we
made a trip to the museum of NATURAL
SCIENCES. A wonderful educative place with
a lot of models and science projects. A visit
worth it all.
After the lunch at the MC Donalnds
children attended the challenger crew
session. Here children were split into groups
of launch team and control room team. Mock
situations with simulations of moon and stars
landing were done.
Children thoroughly involved and enjoyed this
session. Evening again we visited famous Bay brook
mall had our dinner and came back to our rooms.
We packed the night itself as we had to lave after

We left the school campus
at around 9.15 am and reached
the Anna Centenary Library at
10.30 am. The students visited
all the floors one by one. Each
floor had different collection of
books. The first floor was filled
with video games and story
books for kids. The second, third
and fourth floors had a variety
of books related to literature
and political science. The fifth,
sixth and seventh floor had
enormous collection of books
on science and medicine and
business management and
geography. The students were
given enough time to refer
the books according to their
interest. They interacted with
the librarians, clarified their
doubts and came to know that

We visited Disney Land, children

Magic Kingdom. Children did enjoy

Prime outlets. A tiring but a fun filled
day. Next day at Universal studios was
awesome experience. Rendezvous
with all the animated characters was
interesting.
From Universal Kingdom we
packed and left to New Jersey and
then headed towards Niagara Gods
amazing creation.
The huge Niagara fall is a sight to
watch. Water just gushes and flows
through. The place where you see the
boundaries of America and Canada.
The Boat ride Maid of Mist is
definitely a life time experience. After
the wonderful visit to Niagara, we
travelled back to the world : popular
city New York. The tall sky scrappers
and the busy life around is an amazing
experience.
The places of visit EMPIRE
State Building, UN Building, Statue
of Liberty has a beautiful history of
its own. After two days of visiting we
headed towards the airport to leave to India.
Though with a sad note, yet still the memories
of NASA and other wonderful places of visit at the
United States are perfect memories to cherish.

We reached Semmozhi Poonga at around 11.50
a.m. There the students saw different kinds of
plants of various ages which were imported from
China. They enjoyed seeing different kinds of roses,
flowers and plants. The students also loved the
water fountains. We then went to Egmore museum,
and at around 1.00 pm, the students were provided
with lunch. They saw the various sculptures and
memorial stones. They enjoyed seeing the Art,
Bronze, Mammal and Bird galleries. The students
understood the importance of the ancient
monuments and the life cycle of birds and animals.
We reached our last visiting place, the Birla
planetarium at around 3.20 p.m. The students saw
the 30 minutes a video film on Solar System. They
had a virtual experience
of space, the planets and the satellites. We visited
the science exhibition. The students
learnt about the rain water harvesting, sewage and
slum improvement system. They also learnt sound
and light, disease agents and recycling of waste.
They were overwhelmed by watching a video film
with three dimensional effects.
The students were provided with refreshments
in-between. Finally we reached our school campus
at around 6.15 pm. The entire trip was well
organized and conducted in a smooth manner.
It was a very informative and enjoyable trip for the
students.

W hat books and labs cannot impart, can be
imparted through field trips. Keeping this
in mind, the Field Trip for class X was organized on
18th June, 2011 by our school. The places of visit
were Semmozhi Poonga, and The Anna Centenary
Library . The students were captured by the beauty
and serene of every place.
The Anna Centenary Library
The students considered themselves blessed
as they walked into the 9-storeyed library. They
visited the newly established state library of Indian
State of Tamil Nadu which is said to be the largest
library in South Asia. Later as they were taken
into the main dedicated childrens section they
were enthralled at the style in which the floor was
arranged with fun filled theme-based reading area
with multimedia kits and storybooks.
They never failed to realize that in the library they
had a high-tech Braille section with talking books
and Braille display. Hence it was felt that Norman
Cousins words have come true A library is the
delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where
history comes to life.
Semmozhi Poonga
The Botanist in every student was awakened
as we visited the Semmozhi Poonga. They were
startled to see the twenty-five thematic gardens,
including herbal, aromatic, maze and cascade
adorn every corner of the park. The students
also witnessed the micro-tube irrigation which
has been arranged for watering the plants. The
students bubbling with enthusiasm raised a
number of questions on the various plants.The
students were highly amused as they witnessed
the Bonsai garden dotted with trees. Specially, it
was a real treat to the students, as they watched
with awe the various specimens of rare varieties
of ficus, microcarpa and ficus ginseng. Thus it was
a dream come true for students as they watched
with disbelief the trees with more than 100 years
old.
Thus the field trip was thoroughly enjoyed by
the students as it had with it every aspect that
would fascinate a student.

The students from class VII & VIII
joined together and visited HDFC bank at
Kanchipuram on 13th December 2011. The
Trip was an informative and interactive one.
When we reached the bank, the bank Branch
Manager Mr. Meiyappan Shanmugam came to
the entrance and welcomed our children. Children
gave a nice greeting card to the branch manager
to show their regards.
Then the Branch Manger took all the children
inside and introduced his staff members and
gave nice refreshment. Then he started to
speak with the children about banking and all
its transactions. He began with what is bank?,
then he explained about KYC (Know Your
Customer), and the types of services in the bank

Park at Vandalur. Most of the students had not
visited the zoological park before and they were
excited to step in.

animals from various country brought together
under one roof in the zoological park.

and credit was explained well by Mr. Meiyappan.
He asked the children who monitors all the
bank transactions. The children came with various
answers. Then he appreciated all the students and
said the Reserve Bank of India is monitoring all the
transactions of the bank.
He took all the children to the safe locker
room and showed the lockers and he explained
how the security is given to the lockers. He also
stated that one key of the locker will be with
the customer and the other key will be with the
bank and both the keys should be inserted to
open a particular locker. He gave a questionnaire
to test the students observation skill.
Finally, he collected all the students group
wise and gave a demo of operating ATM machine.
The bank staff members have explained all the
transactions through ATM including balance enquiry,
mini statement, money transfer, pin change and
the withdrawal of money, etc.
Then we thanked all the staff members of
the HDFC bank and boarded the vehicle and
reached the school campus safely. Thanks to our
Senior Principal for giving this opportunity to the
students to develop their knowledge by learning
new things.

and resolved to take it up as their
hobby. They were inquisitive and very
eager to learn about their habitat, feeding

This trip served as a starting point to stir
the interest in Ethology. They were keen to
observe the similarities and in differences
in behavioural pattern of different animals.

We could see animals like Chimpanzee, Lion,
Bison especially Tigers at close vicinity.
We were fortunate to spot lion and lioness during
lion safari. Students were thrilled and excited to
see the lions very closer. Students were eager to
record the extinct species displayed on the zoo info
boards and the year of extinction. They were also
excited in recording few amazing animal facts.
Sir, we as teachers of classes IV, V & VI thank
you for the excellent opportunity given to our tiny
tots to have a wonderful live experience of found

ACTUARIES
The Department of Mathematics
conducted a guest lecture based on
the topic. Actuarial Mathematics
on 28th June 2011. Being the first
guest lecture of the academic year
2011-2012, the programme started
off with an auspicious moment of
lighting of the lamp which was
followed by a beautiful prayer
song by the senior girls choir. The
welcome address was given by the
creatively, work collaboratively, use
the Internet to do research, and
communicate clearly and effectively.
Students also need to be responsible
and accountable, to be up on the news,
and to have a workable knowledge of
economics and business.
To promote that the task force
recommends revising teacher training
and recruitment, weaving those skills
into curricula and assessments, and
holding schools accountable for
delivering that kind of education.

With this motto, our ever dynamic Senior
Principal Organized this informative City Level
workshop on 9th July 2011 for the students
of class XI and XII (Computer Science) .This
workshop was focused on the topic CREATIVITY
AND PROBLEM SOLVING. About twenty seven
schools participated to equip themselves with the
power of creativity and problem solving.
Head of the department of Mathematics which was
followed by a presentation put up by the 12th grade
boys, Bharath, Husnul and Dieon.
The speaker, Prof. Sivaraman, Ph.D, Vaishnan
College was introduced by our Vice Principal
Executive after which he took the stage and
introduced the topic to all our fellow Johnians. He
gave a detailed lecture on the displiners of actuarial
science, becoming and actuarial resource person,
various scopes offered in this branch
of mathematics and application of
actuarial in different fields.
Following the lecture, our beloved
Senior Principal gave the presidential
address and inspired all of us to learn
more. The programme came to an
end with the vote of thanks proposed
by Mast. Dieon Roger. Maths club
secretary.
The main focus was on

The key to success of this initiative has been
establishing a wide network and fostering the

participants. The results achieved through this
workshop/orientation will contribute to the effective
expression of these skills in those who participated
in this programme.
CLUB ACTIVITIES
The Computer club in SJIRS conducted the
following activities for the different groups to create
awareness of computers by bringing an element
of challenge and competition and to test their
aptitude.
For the Group-A students, the activity Techno
specialist was conducted on 15.09.11, The idea
is to design any multimedia presentation using
techniques like scripting and animation on the
topics given. Each student played the role of an IT
Specialist, having to understand and explain the
function of computer terminology and the features
of an efficient computer. The students attained
knowledge of technology and its processes to
create awareness of computers by bringing an
element of challenge and competition and to test
their aptitude.
Group - B students were involved in Web
designing on 30.08.2011, Teamwork skills are
strengthened when students must work together
toward a common goal or product. Students are
motivated by the freedom to pursue topics of
personal interest. Think Quest opens the learning
community far beyond the classroom to create
effective Web Quest communication products that
provide students with opportunities to analyze,
synthesize, and evaluate information and alternative
Perspectives.
Techno-Ezine was an activity conducted for
Group - C students on 19.11.2011. No matter how
much kids may say they love their science class,
fun science facts still fascinate them. Science facts
are about animals, humans, nature, the weather,
technology and so on were designed as web pages
and presented to all the students.
Welcome to cool science - a multimedia
presentation was done by group -D students on
03.02.2012 to explore the many cool feature
of Science. Students discover the meaning of
what they learn by working together to develop
presentations, rather than being taught facts from
books.
Guest Lecture
Lectures are probably the best teaching
method in many circumstances and for many
students; especially for communicating conceptual
knowledge, and where there is a significant
knowledge gap between lecturer and audience.
But lectures are effective because they exploit the
spontaneous human aptitude for spoken (rather
than written) communications and because they
are reel-time. human-presence social events
(rather than electronic media).Our Senior Principal
Dr.R. Kishore Kumar, had given a chance to arrange
the Guest Lecture on 17th November 2011, to
elaborate on how software is developed.

Group Leader (systems) delivered in detail about
the concept of Multimedia in ubiquitous technology.
Unlike traditional multimedia computing, ubiquitous
multimedia computing aims to be thoroughly
integrated into everyday objects and activities.
The new possibilities of ubiquitous multimedia
computing pose new challenges across many areas
in computer science: wireless and mobile networks,
multimedia processing, multimedia systems and
applications, operating systems, middleware,
and user devices. He motivated the students by
illustrating the career opportunities in the current
software field.

The
Republic day
celebrations in the portals of
SJIRS started with a bang, with the band at the
back drop playing a patriotic melody and the NCC
leading the way with the four V.Ps parading towards
the flag. Our national flag fluttered in the breeze as
our V.P. Executive hoisted the flag and our anthem
was in the air.
The celebrations ignited at the Hebron Hall with
a prayer song echoing the praises of our awesome.
God invoking his presence for the days celebration.
Our V.P. Admin, Mr. Michael Sebastian gave the
welcome address thundering the words of Tagore,
Let my country awake!, which was followed by
a Tamil song, which echoed, Be proud to called
an Indian.
United we stand, so goes a saying proving
those wise words, the collaborative efforts of all
the departments were put on show successfully.

Workshop on
Interpersonal
Excellence
On 24th November 2011 Thursday, Ratna Sagar
Pvt.Ltd, conducted a workshop on Interpersonal
Excellence at Sind hi Model Senior Secondary
School Kelly's Chennai.
It began with welcome address by the Principal of
the school.
The resource person for the day was Mr. Surya
Narain Bahadhur, who is a Course leader from
Confluence Training and Development Corporation.
He started his speech with a positive and right note,
by quoting the words I can. I am healthy; there
is nothing we cannot do. He also said that this
conviction is the first step for progressing to be a
leader. His speech then proceeded with the help of
power point presentation about Kiran Bedi thereby
explained various complex phenomenon of life.

of the day. The really mesmerized our
hearts and minds with the spirit of patriotism.
Next on stage was a quiz programme, which
was very informative. It contained facts
about our anthem, our famous freedom fighters,
their inspiring slogans, our constitution, etc. It was
an eye opener for the pupils and made them aware
of the essential facts about our country.
This programme was organized by the social
sciences and library department. This was followed
by a fiery Hindi Song and a skit, which was staged
by the department of English which echoed the
theme of the day in a practical manner.
Next the stage was taken by the department
of science, who showcased choreography, which
was a treat for the eye, mingled with the patriotic
emotion of the day. Commemorating the 150th Birth
Anniversary of Tagore, the father of our National
Anthem, a thought provoking documentary titled
Timeless Tagore was presented to the pupils
by the department of computer science. The
celebrations ended on a greateful note with our
Vice Principal (Executive) Mrs. Elizabeth Proposing
the vote of thanks. The day was observed with all
its reverence. Glory to God.
If 100 things happen 10% are because of
others 90% of them are our own doing. We
are in control of our life and we are solely
either to bring a positive change or a negative
change.
He then said that The best profession in the world
are Teacher and Doctor and he also emphasized
that the importance of being proud of our profession.

problems which are not voiced otherwise. I take
immense pleasure in thanking our Senior Principal
for providing us such an exposure and a great
opportunity.

Unity & Discipline
Ncc is not an ordinary word. It is an
extraordinary power. This type of
power only can handle by the youth thats why
this practice & preference only giving to school
and college students. So that whatever it may be
we have start with extraordinary power through
NCC motto. The main motto of NCC UNITY AND
DISCIPLINE without unity we cannot do anything
and without discipline we cannot make unity.
In our school maintaining NCC AIR wing
discipline some Air wing activities entirely different
from navy and army wing activities for eg. Salute
and halt etc., This academic year 2011-2012 are
enrolled 54 students and old statement (IInd year)
46 totally 100 cadets of our school practicing the
NCC parade. This year we conducted special paide
for sports day, independence day and republic day
me motivated, and trained with right way and right
thoughts.
We celebrated 67th Independence day in our
school complete. The flag hoisted by our school
General Manger. Mr. Christo Packiadurai and are
celebrated 63rd Republic Day parade with grand
manner. So that our whole school participated

Debate Competition
The two day debate competition was conducted
by the verbattle south, Bangalore headed by Mr.
Deepak Thimmaiah, a media person on 24th
and 25th of January 20l2. 0ur children Mast.
Reju Rohan and Mast. Nitin Reddy from class
VIII actively participated and scored 62 points. It
was very interesting and innovative competition
where the children were able to share their own
views and developing their self confidence and
communication skills. Children delivered their
ideas and information related to the topic and gave
a very tough competition to other contestants. They
lost their semifinals in one point. Though they failed
to enter the semi finals, they learnt all the technical
aspects of a good debate session. Over all, the two
day session was very informative and was useful
one for our children. I thank you sir, for given this
opportunity for our children in developing their
skills on good debate.

Our first guest lecture on Business Studies was
held on 29th June 2011 which took place at the Zion
Auditorium and our resource person was Mr. Arun
Mohan the Vice President of HSBC Bank Chennai.
He gave a lecture on the topic ROLE OF BANKING
IN SOCIO ECONOMIC LIFE which was highly
educative.
The gathering was welcomed by Mr. J.L.
Gerard Head of the Department Commerce and
Mrs. Elizabeth Edwin, our Executive Principal
introduced our guest speaker. It was followed by
the Power Point presentation by Mast. Saswat and
Miss Prakriti of class XII-C which was an interesting
and interactive session on the topic ROLE OF
BANKING which gave us an insight into banking.
Next, our guest speaker took over the session
giving us the true essence of banking in a lucid
manner.
Our guest speaker started his session by
defining the foremost thing, what a bank is and by
enlightening us about the history of banking A
Financial Institution that accepts deposits and
channels the money into lending activities. The
origination of banking was in Italy in the year
1406.
He showed us the various job availabilities in
the banking sector for example customer service,
equity research, accountant, sales executive,
portfolio, management etc.
He explained us how banking makes money
in a very interesting manner and cleared our
doubts regarding that topic explaining that the
banks make money using the net interest income,
which is the difference between revenues generated
by interest-bearing assets and the cost of servicing
liability.

and consequences of inflation. This was
followed by an educative but lively quiz by Mast.

of our economics department. So for the
guest lecture Economics Department released
badges and booklet containing information on
inflation so that this would simplify the
causes and consequences of inflation to the
students.
Then the podium was given to our resource
person Dr. Sukanya Das. She first began by
giving us the outline of inflation. She defined
inflation as the increase in average level of
prices of goods and services. She explained to
us that all the consumers have their economic
frontiers which we cannot push further.

He explained to us what net fee income is which
the income is that is generated from products such as
nsf or overdrafts etc.
He introduced us the different kinds of banks:
Central Bank, Commercial Bank, Savings Bank,
Postal Savings Bank, Off-shore Bank, Credit Union,
Ethical Banks and Direct or Internet only bank.
And also the types of banking: Business Banking,
Corporate Banking, Retail Banking, Investment
Banking and Merchant Banking
Different channels of banking are: Automatic
Teller Machine, Retail location, Call Centre, Mail,
Mobile banking, Online banking, Private online

She further classified inflation as

She gave us the various ways how inflation
is calculated and highlighted the index numbers
as the most prominent one. She also explained
various policies which government uses as tools
to control inflation.
On that note she ended her presentation
which marked the beginning of the interactive
session where our students asked many
insightful questions like if inflation would defy the
law of demand.
However as all good things come to an end,
the guest lecture came to a conclusion with the
vote of thanks by Miss. P. Aneesha, Student Club
Secretary - Commerce. Such guest lectures benefit
us by relating various concepts of economics with
real life phenomenon which make the subject all
the more interesting and informative.
BUSINESS STUDIES
OF INDIA whenever the banks have any shortage of

INDIA. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks
to get money.
Rural banking was also explained in
simple words. It is the process of conducting
banking transactions of money even in rural
areas.
He also explained about foreign exchange which
is in the conversion of one country currency into
that of another.

informative and educative. Such guest lectures
develop the students interest towards field of
commerce and make us more goal oriented .AII

Chemistry in
Day-To-Day Life
The Chemistry Guest Lecture was based on
the topic Chemistry in day to day life. The chief
guest was Asst. Prof T. Sivaramakrishnan from
Vivekananda College, Mylapore.
The program started with a prayer song by the
senior girls choir followed by welcome and guest
introduction address. The students were provided
with a quiz paper where they were asked to answer
the quiz by listening to the guest lecture.
In first session demo quiz was arranged, which
consist of two parts. First part XII standard student
performed demo practical and asked questions
based on the performed practical. In second part
pictures of various scientists were shown in parts
along with clue, where students have to identify
the scientist name.
The second session consists of power point

The Biology guest lecture on the Topic Oncology
in Todays World started with the prayer song by
our Senior Girls choir, which invoked the presence
of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Ms. Jeslin Snekha Premila, the Head of the
Biology Department welcomed the Guest Speaker,
Mrs. Saritha, Oncologist, V.Ps, and the colleagues
and students. Then Vice Principal (Executive) Mrs.
Elizabeth Edwin introduced the guest speaker Dr.
Saritha to the audience. Which was followed by a
PowerPoint presentation on Oncology by Mast. Kim
Jin Woo and Miss. Shirley of XII B. The presentation
gave an insight on what is cancer, types of cancer
& Treatment for cancer. The ppt presentation was
appreciated by the Guest Speaker.
Later, Dr. Saritha Spoke about Cancer
symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment in detail. She
covered a vast and fascinating details on Cancer,
which was followed by a questioning session, which
made most of the students clarify their fear and
doubts on cancer.
The guest Lecture ended with on
official vote of thanks by Ms. Phindariaki of
XII B. To add to this guest lecture. We felt the guest
lecture moved the minds of the students. Few
students promised they will quit smoking. Which
made us feel, the purpose of the guest lecture was
achieved.

used as smelling salts where ammonia smell
wake up reflex action of breathing organ so that
breathing muscles work faster.
5. Zeolites:- They are the molecular sieves
and also act as ion exchange agents which
can be used to purify water and many other type
of colloidal solution.
Along with above topics many other topics were
included like role of chemistry in - superconductors,
medicine, deep sea diving, fire work, purification of
metals, artificial grass, cooking with acid and base
and many more. In the guest lecture many topics were
related to XI and XII standard topics which can be
used for better and higher order of thinking among
the students. It was also observed that students
were taking notes on some of the important topics
like zeolites. Even majority of students were able
to answer quiz answer sheet provided to them
and winner was decided by chemistry department
based on best performance in quiz.
As soon as the guest completed the
lecture there was an interactive session where
many students asked questions on various
application of chemistry and guest was able
to explain all the questions of the students.
Finally vote of thanks was given by science club
student secretary. Later feedback forms were
distributed to the students in order to check the
effectiveness of the guest lecture and feedback
was very positive and motivating. The credit
of effectiveness of program goes to our senior
principal for his guidance and extended support
for all activities. All vice principal for arrangement
and implementation of tasks and to the students
of SJIRS.
Developing AUGUST
CollabCad 24-26
The three day Orientation Program was on the
usage of CAD program (CollabCad) for the partial
fulfillment of Engineering Graphics Practicals
(10 marks) as per the Senior School Curriculum
2012. The program on the first day started with the
lighting of the lamp by Mr. E. Daniel Raju, Assistant
Education officer, CBSE followed by Mrs. Geetha
Balachandran, Principal DAVSCHAR and officer
from NIC (Develop of CollabCad) in presence of the
11 participants, who came from different parts of the
country. This was followed by brief introduction on
the objectivity and needs of this type of orientation
program.
This was followed by introduction of the new software
to the new and old participants and guiding them of
loading procedure into the system. The basics of the
drawings of points, Lines, Planes and their properties
were told to the learners. The whole day was put on
for practicing of the basic solid models (Prisms and
pyramids) till the end of the day at 4.30 with a break
for lunch. The second day was the guidance on
programming of advanced model making (Exercise
1-8) as mentioned in the curriculum.
The third day was for the practicing of the
(exercises 9-15) followed by the participation
certificate distribution and taking the feedback on
the orientation program both by CBSE and NIC.

for the year 2011-2012 was held on
01.11.2011 at Zion Auditorium. The topic
for the guest lecture was carefully chosen
Cell based Therapy. The most important
potential application of human stem cells is the
generation of cell and tissues that could be used
for cell based therapies. Stem cells are the body's
mastercells that regenerate and turn into the cells
that form all of the tissues, organs and systems in
the human body.
Prof. Rama Shankar Verma from the Department
of Biotechnology, IIT-M was invited to give the guest
lecture on Cell based Therapy'. He is a seasoned
Academician and a reputed and dedicated
Rresearch Scientist. Mast. Ayan Chatterjeee and
Miss. Helen Monica of XIB explained the basics
of stem cells through a powerpoint presentation.
A short video the stem cell story was screened

Prof. Rama Shankar Verma explained
what stem cells are with some real
pictures of stem cells as seen under
the microscope. He explained how stem
cells can be derived from various sources
such as the bone marrow, embryos

made to differentiate into specialized
cells of out need and the development
of customized organs was the most
exciting one. He also mentioned
about the technical difficulties in
culturing stem cells and the need for

these are imported which makes stem
cell research very expensive.
He mentioned about the exciting
promises that stem cells hold for future
therapies stem cells can renew blood
and bones after chemotherapy. Bone
marrow transplant are a well know clinical
application of stem cell transplantation. The
knowledge of stem from patient's plucked hair. The
identification and localization of neural stem cells,
both embryonic and adult, has been major focus
of current research. Potential targets of neural
stem cell transplants include stroke, spinal cord
injury and neurodegenerative diseases such as
Parkinson's disease.
The guest lecture ended with a note that the
promises that stem cells hold are many. But there
is a long way to go and more efficient research on
stem cells is the need of the hour. The inspiring
lecture served as a platform to motivate our
students to take up a research oriented career
in the future.

Geography has become one of the most sought
after subject these days. Realising this Department
of Geography organized a guest lecture on the
Topic Advanced Technology in Earth Science.
The guest lecture was held on 08.12.2011
Mr. Mahendhran of Anna Universtiy was the
resource person. Who gave a very informative
talk on the topic advanced technology & in Earth
Science. He explained in detail the advantages of
studying geography as a Discipline.
The guest lecture began with the prayer song and
welcome address the introduction of the resource
person by Miss. Fransisca from the Department
of Political Science. Mr. Mahendhran gave a very
detail talk on the present day advancement in
geography. He emphasized on how geography can
be choosen as a career. And, then came interactive
session were the students posed questions on the
various dimensions of geography. The guest lecture
enlightened the students throw his answers. Mast.
Sarvesham Boodaji of XII-D the Social Science club
secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Thus the

M. Abhishek Bharath, XI A
SJIRS felt its proud movements once
again when Mast. Abhishek Bharath
who have achieved a great flat. His
sports achievements are well noted
particularly interested in dodge ball
and he is remarkable player too.
He represented Tamil Nadu in the 7th
National dodge ball tournament held in
Thirunelveli, conducted by the Dodge
ball Federation of India. This was
really a proud movement as he was the
youngest player for the TM team. His
participation made it more challenging
for the other teams to get tuff.
The team faced delhi, Madhya Pradesh,
Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu.
They played against Karnataka in finals.
Tamil Nadu team undefeatable run was
put to a stop as the well experienced
players of Karnataka stopped them
from reaching their goal. Though beaten, the Tamil
Nadu team was in high spirits. They had proved
themselves as worthy challengers. They received the
second place and every players was awarded merit
certificates and silver medals. The Honourable Chief
Guest, the Tamil nadu agricultural minister awarded
them. Abishek was highly appreciated by the Tamil
Nadu Dodge ball Association and brought glory to
school. Special thank Mr. Anandan, treasurer of
TNDBA and Mr. Jagan, Joint Secretary of TNBA for
allouring him to showcase his talents.
IGNITE 2012
On 21st January 2012, we the
students of XI standard were
given the privilege to represent
our institution at District Rotaract
Council Meeting held at D.G.
Vaishnava College. It was organized
by the Rotaract club of respective
college. It was basically organized
for encouraging participation of the
interactors from various schools in
and around Chennai.
We were accompanied by our
Interact club staff secretary Mr. N.
Kumar. It was a 7 hour orientation
programme which included many
events such as lectures by eminent
personalities and Rotarians,
presentations on the activities of
various school. It also included
cultural events such as Dancing,
Singing, dramatizing.
The inaugurating speech was
given by a leading entrepreneur
and past district governor of the
club, Mr. Abhirami Ramanathan.
His speech was very enlightening,
motivating and infact he ignited the
spark first in us. The next lectures
were given to us by two budding
women entrepreneurs. By their
speech we became aware of the
basic problems in the initial stage of
entrepreneurship and we also learnt

which should be provided during an emergency.

The anchors of the programme were very
entertaining and kept us ignited throughout the
programme. After the lunch we had a cultural
bonanza full of jumpings, shakings, singing,
dancing etc. Allister Pereira of Xi-Standard from
our school represented our school by singing a
beautiful English song which got a great response
from the audience.
We were given speeches by the present and past
Rotaract members about the importance, birth,
membership procedure of the Rotaract club. The
organizers of the programme invited our student
to express his opinion about the programme.
Our teacher Mr. N.Kumar was also invited for
the same. We were presented a memento and a
few valedictory gifts and a certificate. Finally, the
programme came to end with a vote of thanks. We
enjoyed the programme to the core and infact we
wished that it would have lasted long. We thank
our school administration for giving us such

T he most awaited guest lecture of the year
Accountancy guest lecture started off by
rendering prayers to God Almighty.
It was followed by Mr. J.L.Gerard HOD Commerce
welcoming the gathering and giving us a small
introduction about what are financial statements
and why we need to analyze them in the corporate
sector.
Vice Principal Executive Mrs. Elizabeth Edwin
introduced the chief guest and told us how
knowledgeable she is in varied fields of accounting.
Booklets giving an overall but brief insight about
analysis of financial statements were released and
distributed to all the students.
As zeal of commerce students is uncontainable,
Ms. Aneesha Parvathaneni, Commerce club
secretary and Mast Saswat Sundar, presented a
brief presentation of what are financial statements
and the need, components, significance and users
of financial statements.
It was then time for the students to show off
their skills of quizzing so it was conducted very
enthusiastically by Ms. Prakriti and Mast Sailas,
where the students also showed off their analytical
skills and accounting knowledge.
Then came the most awaited part of the

11th National Cyber Olympiad was
conducted on 8th September 2011. From our

8th International Informatics Olympiad
2011 organized by Computer Literacy
Foundation was conducted on 2nd
September 2011. One hundred and Fifty
six students appeared for this examination
from the classes IV to XII. Students were
coached according to the action plan made
to explore the prescribed syllabus. The
Syllabus prescribed focused on computer
and Information technology facts. Students
were prepared with the sample papers and
study material.
All the questions are multi choice
questions and the students were
supposed to shade the correct answer in
the OMR sheets. Out of all, twenty three
students appeared for the second level
examination. Our Students have done well.
We are anticipating the results. Students
enhanced their knowledge in computer and
information technology.

The department of mathematics at SJIRS
had successfully conducted and organized a
International Mathematics Olympiad founded
by the Science Olympiad Foundation which took
place on December 2011 at the grand campus of
SJIRS.
Out of the lot of students which were interested
in the International Mathematics Olympiad,
75 of the most talented and skilled students
were selected from classes IV-XII and these
talented students were given further training
from the HOD of the Mathematics department
Mrs.Parimala, assisted by the members of the
mathematics departments.
The training sessions were not only conducted
for the purpose of fine tuning the students but
also give them the motivation and confidence level
required for them to write the exam in an efficient
manner.
Conducting the Olympiad not only gave the
students indepth knowledge in maths but also gave
them a cutting edge in all the global competitions
(written) related to the vast subject of mathematics
which also includes IIT-JEE & AIEEE.
The Olympiad benefits the students in the

The 16th CBSE National Athletic Championship
2011 2012 was conducted by Delhi Public School,
from 4th January to 7th January 2012. Five students
of our school were selected for the Nationals.

Among the five students, only 2 students, i.e., Mast.
S. Mohamed Riyaz. S and Mast. Sackishlanth. V
participated in the National Events.
Performance of the Students
Mast. Mohamed Riyaz. S participated in the Javelin
throw and he covered a distance of 43m. His
performance was not satisfactory, the reason for his
poor performance is due to the very bad weather
condition that prevailed in Delhi and the event was
also held in the morning. The boy was unable to
withstand the weather condition and gave his best.
Mast. Sackishlanth.V participated in the 400 m event
and completed the Event in 54.4 Sec. It was also a
poor performance from his side. The reason for the
poor performance is due to the very bad weather
condition and grass ground.
I thank the management especially our beloved
Senior Principal who motivated and rendered all
the help needed to participate in such a prestigious
event. Though we were not able to win any medals,
yet it had been a very good learning experience for
the students, who want to be outstanding athlete
in future. This experience helped the students to
realize their draw backs both in physical fitness and
techniques of the events, which would help them to
rectify in future and prepare themselves perfectly
for future events.
CDAC Meeting for
X Std Physics Teachers
The meeting was held at CDAC office in
Taramani, Chennai on 20th August 2011. A
panel of 16 teachers from CBSE Schools
participated.
Dr. Srinivasan from CDAC elaborated that
CDAC in association with CBSE is working on
e-learning of the CBSE curriculum for IX and X.
A group of members from CDAC presented us
on FOSSFree and Open Source Software also
on BOSS Bharath Operating system services
on which they operate.
They seeked our help in the content, Animation
and Questionnaire of NCERT TEXT BOOK
so as to contribute to e-learning a curriculum
of CBSE. Mrs. Helen Beulah from the
Department of Physics participated and was
asked to prepare Questionnaire for the chapter
sources of Energy from X Std. I was also given a
soft copy of Edu BOSS Indian version of GNU/
Linux Operating System which can be installed
and used.
The meeting came to an end by 3.30 p.m with the
reminder of the neat meeting on 27.08.2011.

improvements in the studies, methods of giving

13, 2011. It was a combined Athletic Meet with
st. Johns Academy joining in with their colours for
their Decennial Sports Day. The day was a great
event with the youngsters of both the schools
at their best, straining their minds and muscles
to their utmost limits to the applause of their
parents who had come to witness the event.
The daylong event witnessed the spirit of
sportsmanship at its best, one of the greatest
values the school stands for. With the arrival of the
Chief Guest Thiru I.Raja, IPS, Additional Director
General of Police, Economic Offences Wing, Govt.

the eight contingents with Head Boys and Head
Girls of both the schools and the House Captains
leading them from the schools marching to a
great rhythmic band and the beating of drums at

In his address, he was in all praise for the
contingents that marched perfectly, a rare sight in
most schools these days. The discipline and
coordination had him spellbound. He also praised
the outstanding athletes of the school who carried
the Olympic torch for their contributions. He also
expressed the need to reintroduce sports and
discipline into our education system. Sports along
with academics must be looked at as an agent of
social change. The oath was administered by Mast.
Robin Raj, the Sports Club Secretary. The mass drill
performed by the students from both the schools
attracted a loud applause from the spectators.
The events were conducted with professionalism
and precision. The track and field events saw
a lot of new talent and power. The relays of
the 4 houses were the highlights of the day
that got everyone to their breath and feet. The
enthusiasm and eagerness which the students,
house captains and teachers showed to exhibit
their prowess in sports was exemplary. Though,
the Red House came out the winners for the day,
the event was one that would linger for days in
everyones mind for a long time.
The Prize Distribution and the Closing Ceremony
began at 4.00 pm with Mrs. S Vijaylakshmi, Deputy
Manager (Finance), Indian Airlines Ltd, Chennai as
the Chief Guest. She was astonished by the way
the event had been organized and conducted. The
colourful May Pole was a great attraction at the
end of the day. She gave away the Trophies and
awards to the winners and congratulated them for
their discipline and hard work.

We attended a seminar on the topic Using Pictures
in Classroom on 28th November 2011, organized
by British Council, Chennai.
This session started with an intro-duction of oneself.
To familiarise with one another. We were asked to
move around & find out there similarities and to talk
about one partners.
To mingle and get to know each other we were
grouped in focus. Mr. Manokar Samuel introduced
English Language as the topic and reviewing our
daily teaching of English Language.
l How effective is pictures in the classroom?
l What are the means to use a pictures?
l Demonstrate activities based on pictures.
Each one of us had to list it out. Actions speaks so
we should be expressive in the class.
How will it be without any pictures?
How can we make the class interesting?
He asked a few questions to check how effective
we are using pictures in the classroom, what are
the means of collecting pictures, How can we use
pictures, when why and for what. With the above
question, he asked us to demonstrate based on
pictures. All the participants were asked to list out
the out come of the demonstration. Looking into the
body language, the expressions that we give in the
class. Quick learning happens learning visually. And
also to create & motivate the student.
The session was focused at the below points.
l To practise developing drawing skills
l To explore potential sources of pictures.
l To explore the pictures.
To have more understanding on the above points,

Residential School, Standard XI were taken
to an Edufair in the famous Hotel Hyatt
Regency, Chennai organised by the well
known Educationalist Dr. Paul Chellakumar
on 1st February 2012.
Representatives of wellknown
universities from abroad were present at
their repressive desks. The students were
enlightened by the screpresentatives. The
three hours were useful for the students to
conduct inquiries about the requirements,
admission procedures, scholarships, etc. It
was a productive trip and helped them to
set an aim before hand to start preparing
for the requirements demanded.
There were colleges for various streams
like commerce, engineering, medicine, etc.
and there were further divisions. The recent
course of Mechatronics was also provided,
which shows that the universities were
wellupdated.
Most of the universities nailed from UK,
USA and Australia. The most impressive
and costefficient universities were
university of Victoria (Aus), university of
Western sydency (Aus), University of Leeds
(UK) and Bradford university (UK). These
universities offer quality education and
guarantee good industrial placements.
The students registered themselves to
these universities to be updated by them
periodically. Brochures were issued to all
students in order to fill them in with their
facilities and faculty.
The fair was wellorganized and was a
success, with the students displaying top-
class behavior and carried themselves with
dignity while personally interacting with
the representatives.
Overall, it was an amazing experience
and the students were grateful to the
Senior Principal, to have given them such
an awesome opportunity. The two teachers
who accompanied them also thanked the
school.

be ascertained.
He also empowered how debentures are to
be issued, how interest to be paid and in case of
default what would be the consequences for the
business concerned. He also gave in details how
debentures are too redeemed and the various
methods of redemption of debentures.

Mohana, Principal of the school where heartily
thanked the resource persons and gathering of
60 teachers who enthusiastically participated in
the workshop,. With that the curtains of a very
efficiently conducted workshop were pulled down.
The workshop was very informative one and
it helped us in gaining the knowledge of various
transformation of accounting treatment for the
CBSE boards for the current academic year and
up coming years. Deep felt gratitude to Senior
Principal for giving the opportunity to participate
in such an enriching workshop.

Leadership Training Programme
The most significant characteristic
of a person is to shatter all the
stumbling blocks in his/her pursuits,
this is the quality of leadership.
A person without leadership qualities is
like a ringer without rhythem. Leadership
qualities are inherent in each and every
one of us. Nature has imbibed in us certain tracts.
In order to bring out into light such inherent traits,
a Leadership Training Programme was organized at
our school SJIRS on 23rd and 24th September 2011.
The training programme lasted for two days and it
was conducted by a reputed institute called Only
Success. The programme was attended by all the
budding leaders of classes XI & XII of both SJIRS
& SJA.
The training programmes gave a insight into the
various aspects of leadership. The students were

Science Olympiad Foundation
(SOF) along with Industrial Waste
Management Association (IWMA)
jointly organized an Environmental
programme. Drawing and painting, essay writing,
elocution and debate for Chennai school students
in four different levels (i.e) Junior, middle, senior
and super senior on 2nd July at Railway officers
auditorium, Nungambakkam, Chennai.
Students from many schools thronged the venue
Mast.SESHA SAI. S of Class IV, Miss. MELINDA ANNE
SHARLINI of Class VIII, Mast. DIEON ROGER of Class
XII - IIT and Miss.SRIVIDYA VISWANATHAN of Class
XI participated in the preliminary round of drawing,
elocution and debate that was conducted on various
environment related topics.
It is worth mentioning about the debate on the topic
Improvement in quality of urban environment-
is it the duty of the residents or the government.
To participants from various city schools took part
in the preliminary round. Our students did give a
hard fight and they really stood out in terms of their
originality, spontaneity and clarity of expression.
Unfortunately, there was tinge of disappointment
awaiting us as our students did not get through for
the final rounds. Anyway, every experience is worth
a million and it does count.
11th National Cyber Olympiad 2011
11th National Cyber Olympiad was conducted on
8th September 2011. From our School one hundred
and forty eight students appeared for the exam from
the classes IV to XII. Students were prepared as per
The students were divided into 15 groups with 20
students, Each team had a faculty member as its
leader. They were encouraged to share then opinions
and views, quoting many real life experiences based
on which inputs were given to motivate them. The
hidden talents of the students were brought out
through these group activities viz., ship wreck,
identifying the product, etc.
The main idea behind these activities were to bring
in the principles of co-ordinators, team-spirit, group
coherence, etc. Teams were awarded points based
on their involvement and performance.
The Leadership Training Programme inculcated the
spirit of all the qualities that go to the marking of a
leader. It also broke open the closed personality of
the students marking them to open up, shed their
intuitions and apprehension. The students were all
filled by a new vigour and felt rejuvenated.

8th International Informatics Olympiad 2011
8th International Informatics Olympiad 2011
organized by Computer Literacy Foundation was
conducted on 2nd September 2011. One hundred
and Fifty six students appeared for this examination
from the classes IV to XII. Students were coached
according to the action plan made to explore the
prescribed syllabus. The Syllabus prescribed focused
on computer and Information technology facts.
Students were prepared with the sample papers and
study material. All the questions are multi choice
questions and the students were supposed to shade
the correct answer In the OMR sheets.
Our Students have done well. We are anticipating
the results. Students enhanced their knowledge in
computer and information technology.

INTERSCHOOL
RALLY
The Scripture Union Interschool Rally
was held on 21st of January 2012. There
were 6 different competitions held by them
Bible Quiz, Singing, Choreography, Dumb
charades, Bible charades, Bible costume and
Extempore speech. The preparations for the
competitions started a week ago. We had to
stay back after school every day and coaching
for the respective competitions were given.
For the Bible Quiz, 3 students Mast.
Andrew Benjamin, Miss. Hannah and Miss.
D. M. Jeba Elizabeth participated the bible
Quiz. The Quiz was on the Luke Gospel and
through the preparation and the competition,
we came to know many things which we
didn't know, our school's Bible Quiz team was
selected for the finals where 6 teams where
totally selected. We bagged the 2nd place in
the finals. For singing, 9 people participated.
There were 4 girls, 3 boys (Singing) and 2
boys (Instruments).
The participants were Miss. Melinda
Anne Sharlini, Miss. Sooky Suiam, Miss.
Carithina Lyngdoh, Miss. Kathy, Mast.
Rahul Dev, Mast. Lalremsenga, Mast. Aaron,
Mast. Jackson and Mast. Mathew. The
theme for singing was Turn back to Jesus.
Our school performed a selfcomposed song
which was composed by our Music Master
Mr. Lawrence. There were 3 participants for
the choreography. They were Miss. Roja,
Miss. Jessy and Miss. Helen. The theme
was Youth turn to God. They danced for
a song named Disturbia'. For the dumb
charades there were 3 participants. They
were Mast. Steven Kurian Jacob, Mast. Allan,
Mast. Jendr a John Xavier. They had 4 steps
(rounds) in which 1st round they had to draw
the statement out. For the Bible costume,
Mast. Lalhruitlanga participate.
He was dressed up as The Prodigal Son and
undoubtedly, he got the 1st place. At last for the
extempore speech, Mast. Josiah participated.
He was given 1 minute to prepare for the topic
which he got through lots. This competition
will be a very memorable one. All of us were
able to perform well because of Mrs. Felicia
Navaraj, the Scripture club secretary and
for the choir, Mr. Lawrence. Apart from the
competition, we even got many messages
and advices from the experienced people
of the church. The compeitition was held in
Church Emmanuel' since it was a scripture
competition, we have learnt a lot from the
competition. We look forward to many other
spiritual competition like this. Our special
thanks goes to our Senior Principal without
whom we wouldn't have got this opportunity.

organized this informative City Level Workshop
on 9th July 2011 for the students of
class XI and XII (Computer Science).
This workshop was focused on the
topic CREATIVITY AND PROBLEM
SOLVING.
About twenty seven schools
participated to equip themselves with
the power of creativity and problem
solving. Entire Day programme was
scheduled as:

To focus on three different topics such as
Applying Logical Methodologies to transform a
range of creative options into supportable decision,
Unleashing your Creativity and Brainstorming
Options and challenging assumptions.
Inaugural Session
The program started with a prayer song to invoke
the presence of God. Our Senior Principal did the
welcome address for the entire gathering. He insisted
on the importance of this workshop to develop
the creative and problem solving skills among
the youngsters. The motivational presentation
on Thinking Out of the Box - was presented by
Mast. Sahaya Sachin and Mast. Isaac Christopher
David to induce the term Creatiivty Never Sleeps.
The Key Note Address was given by our chief guest
Dr. Senthil Kumaran, Principal Counsellor -Education
Excellence, CII Institute of Quality, Bangalore .
He started his speech to use the alphabets
A-C which means A for Awareness, B for Building
blocks of learning and C for Creativity throughout
the life.
In real life, resources are limited and the
problems may be simultaneous. He classified
problems at three levels - low level, middle level
and higher level.
But solving any type of problem can be done by
breaking at a point and solving each separately.
He insisted on Common Sense to relax with
problems.

as: 1) Define the problem 2) Observe 3) Analyze
4) Take some actions 5) Check 6) Standardize and
7) Conclude or Fixed solution

the topic Unleashing your Creativity.
He defined creativity as :

l Looking at new perspective
l Doing ordinary things extraordinary
He explained all these facts with real references.
He quoted :
Problem solving gets a lot easier when
there is problem sharing. Learn to share
your problems which will ultimately teach you
problem solving.
Think Different. Do different, to make a
difference.
He imparted the sense of humour as creativity.
For those who are brilliant, the brain waves are
always at work. He advised everyone to be positive
about problems and suggested that problem may
be appeared to be large but its solution is simple.
He insisted on the communication skills and the
command of language. He concluded his views
by saying : First Finish your duties the follow your
passion
Creative Session - III
Brainstorming Options and challenging
assumptions was dealt interactively in detail by
Mr. N.C. Sridharan, Educationist and International
NLP Consultant.
He insisted the following valid suggestions to
the students:
We need to be creative just to make ourself
unique from others. We should revoke our
mind in whatever we do. Our mind should be
creative. Try till you succeed.
Human Being is Thinking Being.
Our ideas change our life challenges for
students are much more. Today sustainability of
individuals seems to be different. They should
be competitive. Creativity comes from left and
right brain. It helps in finding better solution.
Creativity is fantastic world of imagination.
He taught the students to do finger
exercise to activate the brain on creative
thinking using the right brain. He gave
activities which initiated to think on problem
solving. He gave a motivational speech on thinking
ability of the human being.
The workshop was concluded by the motivational
speech by our Senior Principal. He appreciated
all the participants for spending their time on
equipping themselves to solve problems and think
creatively.

A class Apart Professional Development
progressive for teachers was organized
from 28.11.2011 to 30.11.2011 by V-Excel
under the support of the Kunvilla Jacob
Initiative for promoting excellence in
school education at the Vidya Mandir
Senior Secondary School, Mylapore.
The programme commenced with the
welcome address by N. Murali, The
Hindu and a former student of Mr.
Kunvilla Jacob. Each day was divided
into 2 sessions.
Day One 28.11.2011
The participants after a brief self-introduction were
lead into Eurhythmy based on the five vowels of
the English language. Eurhythmy is a technique
that is used to enlighten and purify the mind. The
participants were taught certain postures for each of
the vowels.
Mrs. Gita Bhalla, faculty V. Excel Educational
Trust, enunciated on the child as one with a
irological body, indestructible soul and spirit. She
gave a deeper insight into the various aspects by
child development laying stress on the four fold
Nature of a child, concentrating more on 1-7 & 7-1
yrs of a child. She emphasized the role of a teacher
in moulding the behavior of children at these two
ages. According to her A teacher should be worthy
of initiation in a positive manner and if a teacher is
loving authority the child tends to be gracious.
The afternoon session had Ms. Neha Bharadwaj
a Montessori teacher also specialized in curative
teaching taught the participants rhymes with
actions to be used at KG level to motive the children.
This was followed by a session on the Information
Processing Model by Dr. Vasudha Prakash,
Founder Director V-Excel Educational Trust.
She explained as to how learning takes place with
the help of sensory memory. She dwelt in detail
as to how the senses play a very important role in
the learning process. She emphasized the role of
a teacher in understanding every child in the class
room, reinforcing learning readiness
skills & providing remedial intervention
strategies for specific lags.
Day 2 29.11.2011
The second day started with
Eurhythmy' and was looked over by
Dr. Lakshmi Prasanna a Paediatrician
from Australia. She elaborated on the
development of a child. She insighted
that the physical body of a human
child gives birth to a human soul i.e. the bodily
experience of the 1st 7 yrs of life gives birth to a
inner and every experience with the sensory motor
makes the rich richer in the sense of injustice, anger,
manners, jealousy, pain,pity, compassion etc., She
emphasized that a child needs a free environment to
enrich his / her soul.
This was followed by a session by Mrs. Geetha
Bhall who gave the SPRUCE model on the Five
Domains of a human being. She insisted that all the
above domains are present in a child but there is
a hole in any one domain. Her statement Watch
the doughnut and not the hole made an impact on
almost all the participants. She stressed that is very
essential and important to see a child as a whole
and not the disability alone. She also explained in
detail the various types of disabilities found among
children like Cerebral Palsy / Autism / Asperser's
syndrome and the ways by which these disabilities
can be identified and managed. She also suggested
that instead of bluntly correcting the moral behavior
of the child in common its better to tell an abstract
story / anecdote related to the behaviors which has
a better impact on the child.
The afternoon session had Dr. Michael a
Physiotherapist from Australia imparting on 12
Senses. He said that improvement of academics,
relationships & behavior can be properly achieved
through simulation of senses. He stated that
each child has a unique sensory profile and that
poor sensory profile related to poor academic
performance, poor behavior and poor relationship
with the peers. He emphasized the teacher should
work with love, care and interest towards the
children. He also taught a few managerial games.
Day 3 30.11.2011.
The day started with a lecture on Learning
Disabilities' by Dr. Vasudha Prakash. She
elaborated on Specific learning disability as one
were a child has a specific problem in processing /
reading / writing. She also gave various remedial
interactions for the slow learners like reduction in
the syllabus, question paper etc. She stated that
children with emotional problems have inconsistent
performance. The emotional problems may be due
to peer pressure, over protection by parents, deep
mood swings, detachment from environment etc.,
The participants were divided into groups of 4 and
were given a careful study each for discussion. The
cases were analyzed and remedial measures were
suggested. The participants were also taught Wet
O Wet' a painting technique that can be used to calm
down hyperactive children.
All the three days concluded with a review of what
has been lectured on.
Outcome
Though the programme was intended for KG
teachers, it was very useful as it brought into fore
the various aspects of children's behavior. Overall
the workshop the role of teachers right from
Kindergarten to Eighth Stds have a very crucial role
in determining the behavour of the children. Making
or marring of a child into a good human being is in
totally the hands of the teachers. A good teacher
has to be patient, harness the will / imagination and
creativity of the children. The workshop concluded
that humanization is important in a school.
There should not be pumping of informations alone
but there should also be percolation of the important
and behind every bad behavior there is a longing
and that every relationship before they earn is very
valuable to the child.

Success with SJIRS GUEST LECTURE

Buzzword
I t was a rainy Saturday when all of us were mentally
retiring to unwind with weekend soon. Then came
a note to participate in a one day workshop on
English language at Deccan Plaza Hotel, Royapettah
on November 26, 2011.
With the usual excitement of gaining greater
professional expertise I, Celin Jenifer Edwin,
Department of English reached the destination
to take off with the resource person Prof. Samson
Thomas, Associate Professor, The English and
foreign languages University (The EFL University),
Hyderabad. It was a great gathering of teaching
faculty from various schools across the city.
It was the moment awaited-listen to Prof. Samson
Thomas. He started with a warm-up session by quoting
some articles on confidence in Reader's Digest. It was
stressed that error is an important part of Learner's
book and one cannot learn without goofing. Telling
be asking is the best way of teaching says prof.
Samson Thomas. He also suggested few books like
Inviting students to Learn by Jenny Edwards and
movies like To Sir, With Love (1967), Dead Poets
Society (1989), My Fair Lady 1964, and Sound of
Music. He also taught us strategies like MOM- Must
be taught, ought to be taught, may be taught
and ASK which stands for Attitude, Skill and
Knowledge. It was stressed that classroom has to
be a democratic place and language span across
the curriculum. Finally he ended up by saying text is
an excuse to teach language.
More than we learning new methodologies, it was
the thought that we would reach out to children in
interesting ways and hence make learning a joy even
to the disinterested child. This thought made our
weekend a relaxing one.
Microwave Heating Effects
SJIRS organized the Physics Guest Lecture on Role of
Microwave Heating on Materials on 8th November 2011.
The resource person for the guest lecture was Prof. V.R.K.
Moorthy from IIT Madras. This programme was organized
by the Department of Physics for the students of classes XI
& XII.
The programme was showered by the blessings of Almighty God
by the prayer song from senior choir. Welcoming address was given
by the Head of the Department, Mrs. Rashma Thomas. Our Vice-
Principal (Executive) Mrs. Elizabeth Edwin gave the introductory
note of the resource person. We had a mind blowing power point
Presentation by Master. Sahaya Sachin & Mixx. Shirley of XII. The
power point was prepared by Master. Abdul of class XI.
The guest speaker Prof. Moorthy gave a simple &
descriptive explanation of the microwaves. He stressed
on the heating of materials due to the microwaves. Each
compound was discussed with the bonding, for example
How water gets heating when kept in a microwave? He
stressed on polar compounds & also explained on dipole
moment. Exciting power point presentation was done on the
heating of different materials with the help of microwaves.
The interactive session was made fruitful by D. Srinivasan
& B. Siddhart of XI. The questions was answered in a simple language and became a motivating
factor for the other students. The recourses person was extremely honoured to serve or share the
knowledge to the students.
The vote of thanks was given by our Physical Science secretary Master. Issac. He expressed the
gratitude of all the SJIRS members to the guest and to our Senior Principal who plays the key role
in organising the guest lectures. Guest lectures are informative & encouraging for the students for

Students were asked to write a slogan on
Conserving Water. A discussion was held by
collecting the points from each child. The next
problem related to Global warming namely the
different modes of transportation such as Mass
transport; Train Bus (Public Transport), High roads,
Parking etc were discussed use of public transport
as the best means to prevent or reduce the effect
of global warming was concluded unanimously.
A discussion about tax was held followed by a
debate on the topic Road tax Good or bad where
students came out with their personal views.
Students also came out with various solutions
to reduce Global warming. At the end of the session
some other ways to save the earth were discussed
like
l Use of alternate fuels
l Bio / organic
l Solar and electric equipments etc.
The session ended up with a debate on the topic
Is nuclear power good.
Outcome
l The different forms of fuel and their uses were
learnt.
l Students gained information about petroleum
which is getting exhausted, therefore Bio
fuels are very helpful.
l Use of solar power is favourable to reduce
power cuts mostly in developed countries.

was explained through examples as doing something

humiliation and disappointment which will end up
in losing the truth of others and fame. A responsible
person will start planning, keep track of things and
care for oneself and others.

The topic dealt in this workshop was,
Activities beyond the text books. The
Resource person emphasised on uncovering
learning rather than covering the portions. She
clearly stated that English had to be learned
by the students and not taught.
The workshop provided a lot of innovative
techniques which could be applied in the class
rooms, in which the student involvement was
to be to the maximum and the teachers role
was just to be a coordinator and mediator.
Some of the techniques suggested to be used
in teaching prose and poetry were framing
Questions. Identifying phrases, Creative
dialogue writing, Role Plays, etc.
She also came up with number of activities
that could be done for Formative Assessments
in CCE, which included debates, interviews,
collage, Journal writing, Magazine making,
Singing, Advertising, etc. To make our teaching
interesting and effective we were also given
handouts of attractive and catchy poems
for teaching Punctuations, Homophones,
Pronunciations and Spellings.
The Resource person gave us hints on how
a group activity could be effectively carried out
by organizing group coordinators, mediators,
scribes, reporters and time keepers within
groups.
And she ended with an important note that
the English teachers were not only there to
impart the language but to create an impact
in the overall personality of the pupils.
This workshop was exactly the need of
the hour, and proved to be one of the most
effective workshops attended.
Communal Harmony
Need of the hour
T he National Foundation for Communal
Harmony (NFCH), a Central Government
Organization based in New Delhi, conducts a
campaign on Communal Harmony from 19th to
25th November. Schools across the country have
been encouraged to participate as well, according
to a note circulated by the CBSE.
We at St.John's International Residential School
have been celebrating it every year since it is a
good opportunity for students to learn more about
communal harmony. Normally, we organize a series
of cultural activities around the theme, like music
recitals and role plays which are performed in the
assembly. We also get speakers to talk to children
about communal harmony from time to time. It is
important that such concepts are propagated when
students are young so that they will be more aware
of it. It will enable them to become good citizens

Grammar in a four-skills based on
a CLT approach was conducted by

specialist on June 17, 2011.
The first workshop was to discuss the best
way to integrate English into the curriculum.

English should be taught as a foreign whether

or should it be the language of instruction in

strategies
We attended a seminar on the topic Teaching
strategies for the common mathematics
syllabi on 23rd January 2012, Organized by
Meston College of Education.
The resource person was Mr.Iyyapan from
DPI. It was conducted in two sessions. In
the first session, he spoke about General
teaching strategies in mathematics to reach
the children. He specified the teaching of
Geometrical shapes in the classes where it has
to be introduced strongly. He also explained
the shapes through a group activity where
the children themselves can understand the
properties of different shapes and hence they
will identify the shapes.
In the second session, he gave us the
common misconception of the students and
discussed about their remedies. BODMAS
rule based on the arithmetic operation was
considered as the major area where students
are lagging in and easy method to solve
these types of problem were discussed.
And also areas like integers, symmetry of
7 pin polygon activity were showed through
PowerPoint presentation. On the whole, the
programme was very useful and informative.
We thank our Senior Principal for giving us
an opportunity to learn better technique in
teaching mathematics.

SCIENCE WORKSHOP
It was pleasure of attending the
workshop conducted by the famous
Bharathi Bhawan Publishers, held on
16th of December, 2011 at the Modern
Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur,
Chennai.
The resource person was Mr.Surya
Kumar, a research person specialized
in the field of physics. The main aim
of the workshop was to witness some
reformation in the teaching methods of
the present teachers so as to retain the
interest of the learners.
It is truly a technical and professional
workshop which started with an icebreaker session.
Learning of science is one of the prerequisites to help

Improving
Learning
Seminar was held on 27th August 2011 at
Swasami Kalaylaya. Resource person was Mrs.
Padmini Siaman. The Session started with an
introduction on the topic How to handle Slow
Learners. First and foremost, she insisted
that slow learners should not be categorized
and labeled. Every lesson should have an
activity. Question paper should not be only
with written questions, instead it should be
attractive and interesting with an activity based
on the exercises. Individualised reading to be
encouraged and pointing fingers while reading
to be activated. In the classroom teachers
should try to limit the number of rules. Always
give clear instruction and allow feed backs.
The following points were highlighted and
discussed :
1) Each child is unique and comprehends
things at different levels.
2) Maintain the same disciplinary rule for
every child although there could be a
variance in reprimands depending on the
child.
3) Never allow the smarter child to exceed
because he or she is smarter or faster.
4) Always praise your children for their
individual accomplishment and never
compare their accomplishments to each
other.
5) Never allow the smarter child to ridicule
the slow child.
6) Always speak encouraging words to your
children.
7) Teachers should be able to put things in
a capsule.

Attitude
Altitude
A programme on Attitude decides
Altitude organized by Usha Fire Safety
Equipments (P) Ltd., at their premises on
12-09-2011.
The programme started with the
testimonial of Mr. Jagdish Adappa, the
organizer, about the trials and tabulations
he and his family faced in treating their
son Mr. Manjesh Adappa suffering from a
very rare bone disease. He highlighted the
importance of will power and perseverance
it was a delight to see Mr. Manjesh now
cured of his bone disease and heir to the
successful business.
There was also a discourse by Kalaimamani
S.R.Krishnamurthy, a limbless legend who
enunciated on the importance of being
positive and blissful in any situation. It was
motivating to see this man sitting on a table
trying to motivate the ablebodied through
his talk interluded with keerthanas from
different languages. One Mr. Ravichandran,
employed in BHEL, shared his harrowing
experience of losing his left leg in a major
accident and how he was able to overcome
it with sheer grit and determination. All the
three owed their success to God's grace and
to the immense support from their families
and friends. The programme ended with the
distribution of a CD on S.R. Krishnamurthy
and training on First-Aid for those who came
from industries.
