Chapter I.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Client

The Center for Career Services (CCS) aims to assist undergraduates and alumni of Mapa

Institute of Technology in defining their career goals and learning how to achieve them through

counseling sessions, workshops, alumni networks, on-line career resource library, and

information and placement services.

The keys to the success of these programs are the following:

A wide range of partnerships with campus academic and administrative departments that

contribute to the breadth and effectiveness of our services.

Providing career-related services and programs that will assist graduating students in

preparation for the world of work to increase their chances of employment.

Establishing company linkages by promoting contact between employers through

industry networks, on-campus recruiting program, and on-line recruitment services.

State-of-the-art technology that maximizes accessibility to resources and services.

CCS assists OJT students by looking for possible partner companies and forge

agreements/MOA with these companies so students can render their OJT. CCS also ensures that

the partner companies adhere to the agreed provisions in the agreement and the training plan.

The primary reason partnerships are forged is to protect the students, Mapua and the partner

companies from any violation against the agreed provisions. This ensures that students will only

be deployed to companies which will provide them the right training as agreed upon.
The excel file that contains list of companies provided by the CCS are sent to schools

through the technical assistants for dissemination to OJT course advisers and students.

1.2 Overview of the Current State of Technology

There are many ways the internet has changed our lives. One of which is the

improvement of the information communication. It has never been easier to disseminate

information thanks to web development.

With the modernization of mobile phones today, users can now obtain information from

any websites that can be easily accessed anywhere across the globe. According to Internet Live

Stats website, there are currently 3.4 billion internet users in the world and 1.5 billion Google

searches this year (2016). Google is the one of the primary search engine for sources of

information in the world.

Currently, there are many ways where people can disseminate and obtain information

easily, Social Media is one of them. As technology innovation develops and extends our scope of

correspondence, web-based social networking is turning into a key device for every day social

interaction. This speedy style of communication that captivates millennials and other generations

has changed our form of conversation from the old face-to-face way to the modern through-the-

screen fashion.

Facebook is one the leading Social Media websites in the world. According the website

Zephoria, there are over 1.86 billion monthly active Facebook users and 1.15 billion mobile daily

users worldwide (as of Feb. 1, 2017). This statistic shows how powerful the social media can be

when it comes to dissemination of information. This led to the rise of Viral Contents on Social

Media. Viral Content is a material, in the form of an article, an image, or a video that spreads
rapidly online through website links and social sharing. Content goes viral for various reasons.

The most common reason is the entertainment characteristic; others include usefulness,

information, artistic merit, promotion of viewpoints and shock value. Viral Contents have also

effects in lives of many people, they spread awareness about current events across the world,

they make people provide opinions about a certain matter, they also help provide solutions to any

problems like solving crimes and many more.

Social Media may be an excellent option in spreading information but keep in mind that

there are also many disadvantages when using this tool. The following is a list of disadvantages:

Many people still dont have social media account. According to Ammex

isupport website (isupportworldwide.com), of the entire Philippine population,

47% are active social media users. It means that the 53% of the entire Philippine

population still dont have social media account.

Youre not in complete control. For example, the public can put comments on

your social page or their profile referring to your profile.

Limited reporting tools. You only get the information the social site chooses to

give you.
Lack of ownership. The level of reporting and features available are often less

than with a website.

Lack of credibility.

These disadvantages make way for other options to disseminate information. Making a

website is another good option. Websites provide full ownership, full control, good reporting

tools and credibility.

With this in mind, the proponent has decided to develop a website where information can

be easily disseminated and obtained anywhere. Right now, the CCS only use manually updated
excel file to disseminate information about list of companies. This file is sent to schools through

technical assistants so they can distribute it to the OJT course advisers and students. This

capstone project will improve the convenience and efficiency for CCS as well as for the OJT

course advisers and students.

1.2 Objectives

1.2.1 General Objectives

The general objective of the project is to develop a database-driven responsive website

for Mapua Center for Career Services (CCS) office that will handle data management and

information dissemination to all Mapua OJT students.

1.2.2 Specific Objectives

Provision of adequate, relevant and up-to-date information to keep Mapua students

informed of the latest events and company partnerships

To design a website that identifies, acquires, organizes and disseminates different forms

of recorded information provided by the Mapua CCS

To design a website to reduce the average time to complete a task (e.g. creating, updating

and distributing list). The proponent will evaluate the success of website based on key

metrics (page visits, bounce rate, average time on page, average time of data operations)

by generating a code that would measure these key metrics

To improve the process of delivering and obtaining information from the CCS office. As

previously mentioned, the key metrics of website will determine the improvement of the

system
To implement a registration / login feature to the website to implement data security
To implement a chat system for immediate response to questions and concerns

1.3 Scope and Limitations of the Project

Responsive website design approach will be implemented in the website so that the

aesthetics of the website will adjust depending on the platform users are using, it may be on

mobile or on desktop.

There will be a registration / login features for office staff to protect the website from

posting false information or modifying the list of companies. All information posted by the office

staff will be available on public so the public users will be able to acquire information without

registering to the website. Office staff is responsible for website monitoring. They can view and

manage users comments, manage contents on the website, manage registered users, and view

generated reports.

The project will also include news ticker to inform the public users about recent

announcements and events. Users can comment on the website to increase user interaction. Chat

system is another feature of the website but it will only be available for the registered users.

1.4 Significance of the Project

The proposed website, if successful, would improve convenience and efficiency for both

Mapua CCS office and students. The proponent will provide key metrics to determine the

success of the website and compare it to the current system. CCS office staff will be able to

provide information for Mapua students and course advisers without going through the process

of distributing excel file to the technical assistants. List of companies will be regularly updated

since office staff can update the information from the website. Students will be able to acquire

updated information from the website anywhere.

Review of Related Literature

The Review of Related Literature for this study provides general idea regarding web

development in disseminating information. This chapter will be discussing reviews of related

systems concerned with directory websites that will lead the proponent on creating a benchmark.

The usefulness of having this benchmark is for the proponent to further expand their know-how
in that field, which later in the long run will help the team to have an overview of what system

should they innovate and develop.

Related Systems

To generate a substantial amount of information, the proponent searched for top directory

websites as well as job portals. The proponent also researched for the local and international

websites. These collected websites will be the basis for the proposed website benchmark as I

review the systems.

First website to discuss is the JobStreet. JobStreet is a popular job portal founded in 1997.

Founded in Malaysia, Jobstreet.com now has a team of 800 talented individuals, giving them a

strong local presence in every country in which they operate. According to Forbes, the Jobstreet

is now the largest online employment company as it currently serves 80,000 corporate customers

and 11 million jobseekers. It is the leading online employment marketplaces that currently

operates in Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Figure 1: Jobstreet.com website

Second to JobStreet is the BusinessDirectory.ph. BusinessDirectory.ph is an online

business directory and yellow pages of companies in the Philippines that aims to give local

business owners the opportunity to boost their business presence online and be more

discoverable by potential customers on the Internet by submitting their business profile, address,

website, map location, and other important business information to the directory. This online

directory also aims to become a useful place for online people who want to easily find the

business, product, service, location and other business information they are looking for within

the Philippines via the Internet.

The website directory is categorized into various business industries and locations which

include all the provinces, cities, and municipalities of the Philippines. Hence, whether a business

is located in Batanes, Sulu or Tawi-Tawi, users are welcome to add their business listing in the

website directory.
Figure 2: Businessdirectory.ph website

Last local website for this list is the Careerjet.ph. Careerjet is a job search engine

designed to make the process of finding a job on the internet easier for the user. It maps the huge

selection of job offerings available on the internet in one extensive database by referencing job

listings originating from job boards, recruitment agency websites and large specialist recruitment

sites. Using a fast and straightforward interface, users can query this database and save

themselves the trouble of visiting each site individually. The job offerings themselves are not

hosted by Careerjet and users are always redirected to the original job listing. Essentially,

Careerjet acts as traffic driver to those sites.

Careerjet's job search engine network encompasses over 90 countries, featuring separate

interfaces that are translated into 28 languages.

Figure 3: Careerjet.ph website

Moving on to the international websites. The first international website is the indeed.com.

Indeed is the #1 job site worldwide, with over 200 million unique visitors per month. Indeed is

available in more than 60 countries and 28 languages, covering 94% of global GDP.

Since 2004, Indeed has given job seekers free access to millions of jobs from thousands

of company websites and job boards. As the leading pay-for-performance recruitment advertising

network, Indeed drives millions of targeted applicants to jobs in every field and is the most cost-

effective source of candidates for thousands of companies.

Founded by Paul Forster and Rony Kahan, Indeed is a subsidiary of Recruit Holdings

Co., Ltd. In the US, Indeed has offices in Austin, New York, San Francisco, San Mateo, Seattle,
and Stamford. Outside of the US, Indeed has offices located in Amsterdam, Dublin, Dsseldorf,

Hyderabad, London, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, and Toronto.

Figure 4: Indeed.com website

Last on the list is the CareerBuilder. CareerBuilder is a global, end-to-end human capital

solutions company focused on helping employers find, hire and manage great talent. Combining

advertising, software and services, CareerBuilder leads the industry in recruiting solutions,

employment screening and human capital management. It also operates top job sites around the

world.

Owned by TEGNA Inc. (NYSE:TGNA), Tribune Media (NYSE:TRCO) and McClatchy

(NYSE:MNI), CareerBuilder and its subsidiaries operate in the United States, Europe, South

America, Canada and Asia.

With job postings as part of their recruitment advertising solutions, resume database

search and job distribution technologies, applicant tracking system and candidate engagement
software, they've covered every stage of the recruitment process for companies across the world.

They also offer background check and screening software, in addition to supply and demand data

that can help inform an organization's overall strategy.

Figure 6: Benchmark table

These features listed in benchmarking table were suggested by our client, Ms. Eira

Camus of Mapua CSS. This benchmarking table will provide the proponent an idea on what

structure the website would follow. This will also determine the functionalities and look and

feel of the proposed website. These are the description of each features:

Responsive Design is web design approach that creates dynamic changes to the

appearance of a website, depending on the screen size and orientation of the

device being used to view it. This approach is the best option for the proposed
project so that the website can be viewed from any devices while maintaining the

interface proportionality and keep the users informed.

Registration / Login features this is an important feature of a website to secure

the website from any false information. This will also authorize an office admin to

control the contents and monitor the website. This feature will also give users

additional features to use like the chat system, comments system and ratings

system.
Comments section users can comment their concerns, suggestions or

complaints.
Ratings feature users can rate any companies to determine which companies

are recommended.
File upload / download feature website administrators can upload documents

such as DAR and approval of project form for students to download.

E-mail alerts the website will notify the students so they will miss important

announcements.
Social Network Integration to enhance user experience, the website will

implement social network integration to allows users to share announcements or

company details to their Facebook or Twitter page.

Chat feature registered users can use this feature if they want an immediate

response to their questions and concerns.

Chapter III

Methodology

For this project, given the limited time frame, the proponent decided to use the Agile

Methodology. With the use of the Agile Methodology, the project will be responsive to change.

This will lessen the costs of change as the development method allows the project to continually

improve and evolve through feedbacks and frequent testing. The website development will be

divided into five phases: Gathering of Information, Planning, Design, Development, and Testing

and Delivery. The whole process will cycle until the website satisfy the client requirements.

Figure 7: Agile Development Process Diagram

3.1 Gathering of Information

This process will gather all clients requirements by conducting client interview. The

proponent will identify the functionalities of the website that the client need. The proponent will
also identify other information such as goals, target audience and content of the website. Once

the clients requirements are gathered the proponent will move on to the next phase which is

planning.

3.2 Planning

Using the information gathered from phase one, the proponent will put together a plan for

the website. In this phase, the proponent will develop a site map. This gives us a guide as to what

content will be on the site, and is essential to developing a consistent, easy to understand

navigational system.

3.3 Design

In this phase, the proponent will determine the look and feel of the site. The proponent

will incorporate elements such as logo or colors to help strengthen the identity of Mapua on the

web site. The proponent will design a prototype so that the client can decide the aesthetics of the

website.

3.4 Development

This development phase is the point where the proponent creates the web site. At this

time, the proponent will take all the graphic elements from the prototype and use them to create

the actual, functional web site. The proponent will also make sure that the website the proponent

is developing meets the requirement of the client.

3.5 Testing and Delivery

This is the point where the web site will be tested. The proponent will test the complete

functionalities of the website. The proponent will test if the forms and scripts are working. The
proponent will also test the compatibility issues of the website so the proponent ensure that the

website is optimized to be viewed properly in the most recent browser versions. If all tests are

done and approved, the website is ready for launching.
