This small figurine of the

Chinese God of Longevity
(Shou Laoxing), is one of
the Museum’s most puzzling
objects. Discovered in 1879
at Port Darwin by a gang of
Chinese workmen building a
road, it was wedged among
the roots of a banyan tree.
It has long been the subject
of speculation. Some contend
it provides evidence that
Admiral Zheng He, a Chinese
eunuch of the Ming dynasty,
'discovered' Australia during
his voyages in the southern
oceans from 1405–33. Others
suggest it might have come
to Australia with Macassan
fishermen who traded with
China. It is more likely to
be related to early Chinese
settlement in Darwin.
The God of Longevity features in the
exhibition Other histories: Guan Wei’s fable
for a contemporary world which opens
in the Asian Gallery on 11 October. Read
more about the artist and the exhibition
