First try to solve the problems on a white scrap paper and then write your final answers

(or use a pencil). The use of a calculator is allowed, but not necessary.
TRIAL-Exam Calculus I: Limits and Derivatives (Exam on May 26, 1.00, Sup. Isl. Counc. 1-4)
The final mark of Calculus I is based on the Mark Basic Math (30%), Assignment (10%) and the exam Limits
and Derivatives (60%). The assignment is only counted (10%) if the mark is greater than the final mark.

Exercise 1: Are the following statements true or false (in general)? True or False
a. If the function f is continuous at a, then f is differentiable at a
b. A function can have two different horizontal asymptotes.
c. If p is a polynomial then
d. If f(c) is an absolute maximum of a continuous function f, then f(c) =
0.
e. If f(1) > 0 and f(3) < 0, there exists a c such that 1 < c < 3 and f(c) = 0
Exercise 2: Find the following limits, if they exist. Show your solution (including and
-) , if necessary in at most four steps. If a limit does not exist, state why not.

Exercise 3: Find the derivative of the following functions:

Exercise 4 Given is the function

a. State the derivative of

b. Give the equation of the tangent line at the point (4, 2) of the graph of f .
c. Proof that the answer of part a, is correct, using the definition of derivative.
d. Give the critical value(s) of f.

Exercise 5: Given is the function

a. Find the derivative

b. Find the absolute minimum and maximum of on the interval [-2, 2]

Exercise 6 Investigate the function

a. State the Domain of f.
b. Find the y-intercept and the x-intercept(s) of f .
c. Does the function have special properties (is it even/odd/periodic?)

d. Compute and give the equations of the asymptote(s).

e. Compute the first and the second derivative of f.
f. Find all local minima and maxima, and determine the absolute maximum and minimum.
g. Sketch the graph of f.
Solutions:

Exercise 1: Are the following statements true or false (in general)? Answer Comment
False In case of corners: the reverse is true
a. If the function f is continuous at a, then f is differentiable
at a
b. A function can have two different horizontal asymptotes. True
e.g.
True Substitution rule for polynomials
c. If p is a polynomial then
False
d. If f(c) is an absolute maximum of a continuous function f, e.g. : absolute max is
then f(c) = 0. f(0) = 0 , but f(0) does not exist.
False
e. If f(1) > 0 and f(3) < 0, there exists a c such that 1 < c < 3 and e.g. . The statement is
f(c) = 0
only true for continuous f (Int. V.T)
Exercise 2

Exercise 4
.

x = 0 or x = 2 and the boundary of the closed

interval are x = -2 and (again ) x = 2.
The function values of these three candidates are f(-2) = e 20 f(0) = e0 = 1
and f(2) = e - 4
On the interval [-2, 2] is f(-2) = e 2 the absolute minimum and f(0) = 1
the absolute maximum.

Exercise 6 a. The domain of f is (f is a polynomial function)

b. y-intercept: an x-intercepts:

Hence f is not even or odd (nor periodic)

asymptote .

Sign scheme of f: see below

First derivative test: and are local minima and f(1) = 1 is a local maximum. Because f is

decreasing left of 0 and increasing right of 2, and are both absolute minima.
