Citation:Happy. Dir. Roko Belic. Perf. Anne Bechsgaard, Gregory Berns, Roy
Blanchard.Happy. N.p., n.d. Web.
Summary: In the pursuit of happiness one should be engaged in
physical activities with close friend and community members, one should
also pursue intrinsic goals. This movie is about the psyche behind
happiness. And the ways that you can find happiness in, sometimes, the
most simplistic of ways. There is a man who lives in Louisiana, he gives
people tours of the swamp. His true happiness is found in the beauty and
surprises of nature. He also finds happiness in being around his family. The
movie Happy goes into more depth and stories of how people all over the
world find their true happiness.
Assessment: As with everything there's a strength and a weakness. A
strength in this was the evidence to back up their claims. They used stories
to back everything up, but they could have been a bit biased towards
happiness so they didn't really show many unhappy people. Overall the
movie was good and informational.
Reflection: This movie shared a lot about the science of happiness,
and thinks that could make us happy. According, to the movie, most people
shared that family, interacting with friends, and physical activity are the
things that make us happy. In my life I may not agree with these tenets of
happiness but the movie helped me understand how people do happiness
research and what common results are.
Evidence:
-there were people running around in monkey suits and they were very
happy.
-there was a fellow in a foreign country that was very poor but he was
happy because he could support his family.
-nature, there was a man in louisiana how found happiness in the unknown
of nature and family.

Publisher: Atlantic Media Company, Electronically Published: January 09, 2013, Date Accessed:
February 24, 2017, Author: Emily Esfahani Smith
Summary: Meaning leads to fulfilment which can lead to joy. This
article, Theres More to LIfe Than Being Happy, a man was in a prion with his
wife and parents, his wife died but he found his meaning and happiness in
helping others find their meaning and happiness.
Assessment: I liked this source because it opened my eyes to the
realization that i'm not done with what life has in store for me, this
realisation is vary relevant in my life right now because i've been really
depressed, there is a song lyric that stands out to me as I write this and I
think that it sums up my feeling, ...when you're thinking of suicide, and the
thought gives you butterflies.... by SayWeCanFly
Reflection: the article gave us the perspective of a man that found his
happiness and meaning in hard times. He had the realisation that even if
things are hard you still have a meaning in life, and pursuing one's meaning
can lead to happiness.
Evidence: to the European, it is characteristic of the american
culture that, again and again, one is commanded and ordered to be happy.
But happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue. One must have a reason to
be happy.
leading a happy life, the psychologist found, is associated with being a
taker while leading a meaningful life corresponds with being a giver.

The Year of Conquering Negative Thinking
Citation: The Year of Conquering Negative Thinking Website Title: The New
York Times, Article Title: The Year of Conquering Negative Thinking, Publisher: The New York
Times,Electronically Published: January 03, 2017, Date Accessed: February 24, 2017, Author:
Lesley Alderman
Summary: the roots, and how to deal with them, of negative thinking.
The main roots of negative thinking were a traumatizing childhood whether
that be trauma, abuse, bullying, or just general upbringing. The article said
that negative thinking is predominant in women. It said that the way to
conquer negative thinking is to not think about it, just let it drift away. The
article gave helpful advice. As stated just let the thoughts flow and go away,
it also said that thinking logically is another way of conquering negative
thinking, thoughts like i'll never... and that'll never instead it'll be
difficult and i may not discussed and controlling your breath.
Assessment: i'd say that it was a good source because unlike the rest
of the sources it didn't focus meanly on being happy, it showed that
negative thinking is a natural part of life. In my opinion it kind of spoke to the
quote that i came up with without pain how can one feel happy? With out
feeling happy how can one feel pain.
Reflection: i really liked this source because i'm a very self
deprecating person and be like this is not helping me in any way, example, i
can't take a compliment so when someone says something nice about me
and i shoot them down it's like i'm undermining their opinion, i don't want to
be that person just because i have a different opinion than them.
Evidence:
The more you dwell on the negative, the more accustomed your brain
becomes to dwelling on the negative, said Dr. Hanson, who suggests asking
yourself, Are my thoughts helping to build me up, or tear me down?
Worry and obsession get worse when you try to control your thoughts, Dr.
Beck said.

The New Era of Positive Psychology | Martin Seligman. Dir. Lesley Alderman. Perf. Martin Seligman.
The New Era of Positive Psychology | Martin Seligman. Ted Talk, 03 Jan. 2017. Web. 24 Feb. 2017.
Summary: in this video they mention what psychology used to be like
and what it's like now, it used to be something that was associated with
judgement but now because of the advances in this field we can treat 14 and
cure two of the mental disorders. He speaks to the science of psychology.
Assessment: this source was very helpful for the understanding of
psychology and how it plays into happiness. given the fact that the man
doing the Ted Talk was one of the founders of this new era of positive
psychology i think that he could have had some bites but it was not very
evident.
Reflection: it's interesting to see and hear about psychology because
i am very interested in that field of research.
Evidence: But the upshot of this is that the mission I want psychology to have, in
addition to its mission of curing the mentally ill, and in addition to its mission of making miserable
people less miserable, is, can psychology actually make people happier?
three different happy lives. The first happy life is the pleasant life. This is a life in which you
have as much positive emotion as you possibly can, and the skills to amplify it. The second is a life
of engagement: a life in your work, your parenting, your love, your leisure; time stops for you. That's
what Aristotle was talking about. And third, the meaningful life.

Citation: What is flow ? By Kendra Cherry - Reviewed by a board-
certified physician.
Updated May 06, 2016
Summary: what flow is and how does one achieves it. The article
states facts about flow, flow is a state of mind where the task that you are
working on is not to hard or easy. You are mastering things as well as fulfilling
an attainable goal.
Assessment: This source backed their article with links to different
articles that would talk about what they were talking about but in further
detail. It seemed to be a good source but i'm not really sure what makes a
source good.
Reflection: i would like to know more about FLOW so that i can have a
better background knowledge on it to understand what is happiness. the
article was good for the use that i had for it: to understand what FLOW is.
Unfortunately it didn't help me in answering the other question that i had:
how/why does FLOW make you happy?
Evidence: "Flow also happens when a person's skills are fully involved in overcoming a
challenge that is just about manageable, so it acts as a magnet for learning new skills and increasing
challenges,"
Flow can lead to improved performance. Researchers have found that flow can enhance performance
in a wide variety of areas including teaching, learning, athletics, and artistic creativity.

Citation: Brown, Nicola. "What the Psychology of "Flow" and Happiness Can Teach Us
about Brand Storytelling." The Content Standard. Skyword, 17 Mar. 2016. Web. 23 Feb. 2017.
Summary: how to achieve flow and use it for the benefit of your craft,
in this case brand storytelling. When in a state of flow you are getting better
at your craft while achieving a goal that will better your future in this part
of things.
Assessment: I know nothing about this source and where it came
from. However, this article does cite reliable sources like the guy that
invented flow. It looks like this source is from marketing organization. This
source did not answer my question.
Reflection: this source was helpful to be because i would like to know
all or a lot of what flow means. My question still stands: why does flow make
you happy. There was a piece of an answer to that question how ever i can't
remember if it was in the article or the video in the article so i'll try and
recreate it when a person is in flow they are fulfilling an intrinsic goal as we
discussed towards the beginning of this project, intrinsical goals bring a
sense of joy or happiness unlike extrinsic goals.
Evidence: The challenges of the activity must be equally matched to the
skills of the person engaged in it.
The activity must have clear goals and provide immediate feedback about progress.

Citation: On the Neurophysiology of Flow lecture slides
Summary: in this article the author is going into what is going on in
your brain while engaging in activities that flow is commonly experience in,
such as sports. It shows us different studies and such that show what is
happening in the brain while in flow.
Assessment: this source was good for what i was interested in
learning. Even though it was a longer read about psychology it was still fairly
easy to understand. The author may not be a psychologist but he seems to
have talked quite a few people to get all of his information.
Reflection: something like this source is what i've been looking for in
the this individual research. Id say that this was a good read for anyone that
is interested in neuropsychology.
Evidence:(i know that this is a lot of reading but i found these lines to
be very interesting)
Fast frequencies such as beta waves are associated with an aroused
mind. Our attention is directed to the world outside. Beta represents our
normal everyday waking state, often associated with feelings of tension and
stress. Very high beta going along with a highly aroused body is panic. Alpha
waves are characteristic of physical and mental relaxation. They are present
during fantasizing, daydreaming and visualisation. Alpha provides the bridge
between the conscious and the unconscious. This is the reason why physical
relaxation is an absolute prerequisite for each and every mental technique.
Without alpha there is no access to the deeper parts of the soul. Theta waves
are associated with drowsiness, early sleep stages, reverie, and with
meditative and trancelike states. Theta is the area of spiritual awakening and
creative insight. It also holds a profusion of memories, sensations and
emotions from our personal history. Delta waves are primarily found during
deep dreamless sleep. Delta is the deep unconscious mind. It is associated
with deep meditation, intuition and empathy, working like a radar scanning
the environment. Very often present in healers, counsellors, therapists and
other helping professions. (A. Wise, 1997)
The specific characteristic of this state is that you have thought
processes represented by beta being connected - through high alpha
with the creative unconscious of theta and delta. This connection allows the
access to your deep memory resources. Differently put: You have intellectual
processing going along with meditative brain waves.
