Job Title Cemetery Laborer FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Reports To: Cemetery Superintendent Supervisory Responsibility: None

General Summary
Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work including, but not limited to,
grounds maintenance, grave preparation, grave excavation, burial functions, seeding, fertilizing, tree
trimming, foundation installation, snow removal, operating earth moving and lawn care equipment, cemetery
cleanup, facilities maintenance, and equipment maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to
perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

General cemetery maintenance including mowing grass, applying herbicides, weed eating, removing trash,
removing spring/fall decorations, and placing flags for Memorial Day;
Prepare and maintain all graves regular, cremation, infant, pond, estate, above-ground crypt,
mausoleum including marking/laying out area, jack hammering , digging with backhoe or manually with
shovel, moving monuments, pumping out water, laying plywood/carpet, shoveling dirt piles, snow
blowing paths and seeding/repairing graves;
Work funerals on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as assigned;
Cleaning, maintaining and repairing equipment including vehicles, mowers, gators, track vacs, weed eaters,
saws, pruners and other small engines;
Install monument foundations including marking/layout out area, digging manually with shovel, building
foundation forms, pouring and finishing concrete and fixing leaning monuments;
Leaf pickup and removal typically using track vac or back pack blower;
Snow removal including plowing, snow blowing, and salting;
Tree, shrub and plant maintenance including trimming, planting, storm damage removal/cleanup, and
brush chipping;
Pond and pond fountain maintenance;
Water line maintenance and repair, turning water on/off seasonally and draining lines;
Drainage maintenance and installation as needed;
Customer service including placing decorations, planting shrubs, locating graves; and
Clean and maintain buildings, shop, restrooms, and office;
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and work experience which provide the required skill set to perform the essential functions of
the job may be considered as qualifying.

Education
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Additional course study or training in landscaping, turf grass management and/or small engine repair
preferred.

Experience
At least 2 years of experience in landscaping, turf grass management or grounds keeping including, but not
limited to, operating commercial grounds maintenance equipment required.
At least 1 year of experience operating a dump truck, tractor and backhoe preferred.
At least 1 year of experience with small engine repair preferred.

Special Requirements
Must have valid Ohio drivers license, be insurable under the Cemeterys vehicle insurance carrier, and will
be subject to periodic review of driving record through Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Ability to obtain an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification (CORE and 8 Turf Pests) within six
months of employment.
Ability to obtain additional certifications within six months of adoption by the Board of Trustees.

Necessary Skill Set


The following generally describes the knowledge and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of
time or order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain common power tools, hand tools, mower, weed eater,
snow removal equipment, gator, backhoe, tractor, truck and other equipment used in assigned areas of
responsibility;
Knowledge of basic maintenance procedures, practices and chemicals used in the maintenance field;
Knowledge of safe work practices and policies;
Ability to work with a variety of chemicals and tools related to grounds keeping, small engines and general
facility cleaning, maintenance and repair;
Ability to meet the physical and environmental demands to safely perform the assigned tasks;
Ability to work in inclement weather;
Ability to work independently or in small groups while performing semi-skilled grounds and equipment
maintenance and repair work;
Ability to maintain simple written records and reports;
Ability to read and interpret a variety of instructions and documents in written, oral, diagram or schedule
form;
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
Ability to peers and supervisor know of decisions, changes, mishaps, and other relevant information in a
timely manner;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and supervisors; and
Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with the general public.

Primary functions in the performance of daily duties:
Require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time;
Require to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand
movements;
Require the use of hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands
and arms;
Require ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight;
Require operating assigned equipment and vehicles;
Require verbal communication to exchange information;
Require specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust
focus with or without correction; and
Require hearing in normal audio range with or without correction.

Work Environment
Indoor and outdoor field environment;
Exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions;
Exposure to hazardous traffic conditions;
Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain;
Work in confined spaces; and
Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, solvents, toxic/caustic agents/chemicals, gases, electrical
currents, moving mechanical parts, vibration, airborne particles, and allergens.
