CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Drug prescription is one of the bases of the majority on what to

buy in medicines. The branded and generic drugs are always being
compared thus formulating this research and there is a perception about
generic drugs having lower quality than the branded drugs. Despite the
argument, both of these drugs have quite the same active ingredients and
they only differ in inactive ingredients.

Branded drugs are more expensive than the generic drugs

because it is due to the advertising and promotions and these are usually
tested in laboratories thus making it safer. This is also why people still buy
branded drugs even though it is more expensive. Between the branded and
generic drugs, the generic drugs have more side effects. Even if the
generic drugs have more side effects, consumers still buy these because it
is cheaper.

This study focuses on the drug preference of people living in

Subic, San Marcelino, and Iba. This is accomplished means of interviews
in drug stores located in the said areas and interviews to by the local
people living there.

B. Statement of the Problem

General Problem:
The study aims to collect information about the drugs preference in
Zambales, specifically in Subic, San Marcelino and Iba.

Specific Problem:

Specifically, the study aims to:

1.) Determine the preference between branded and generic

drugs.
2.) Determine the similarities and differences between the
branded and generic drugs.
3.) Compare the preferences of the three local areas.

C. Scope and Delimitation

The researchers chose Zambales to be the area to observe and to be
the basis for identifying the drug preferences, but mostly in the areas of
Subic, San Marcelino, and Iba have been chosen as locale for conducting
this research. The reasons for selecting the said areas are:
1. The researchers reside in these areas.
2. Conducting the interviews is easier because the correspondents are
within the said area also.

D. Significance of the study

The significance of this study is to inform people about the
similarity of the generic and branded drugs. To the consumers, they will
have further knowledge on which they will choose. Branded drugs are
COLUMBAN COLLEGE
OLONGAPO CITY

more expensive but these are more tested and safer. It has also the same
efficacy as the generic drugs which are cheaper but has more side effects.
To the sellers/pharmacists, they will have information on which the
consumers prefer and could use this as an advantage on what to release to
the market. To the Zambaleno buyers and to all the patients out there, they
will be able to get more important information regarding the most
preferred medicine in Zambales based on the survey the researchers
conducted. For the researchers, this study serves as our basis, guide us to
elaborate deeper what on what is preferred.

In general, the research can definitely be sensible about choosing

and taking medicines out there in the market.

Generic Drugs pharmaceutical products meant to be identical to an
innovators product, that is developed outside of the innovators license
and sold after the patents expiry date and other restricted rights.
Active Ingredients An active ingredient (AI) is the ingredient in a
pharmaceutical drug that is biologically active. The similar
terms active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and bulk active are also used
in medicine, and the term active substance may be used for natural
products.
Inactive Ingredients Inactive ingredients are components of a drug
product that do not increase or affect the therapeutic action of the
active ingredient, which is usually the active drug.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Generic Drugs
A generic name refers to the identification of drugs and medicines
by their scientifically and internationally recognized active ingredients or
by their official generic name as determined by the Food and Drugs
Administration (FDA) of the Department of Health. An active ingredient is
the chemical component responsible for the claimed therapeutic effect of
the pharmaceutical product. On the other hand, a brand name is the
proprietary name given by the manufacturer to distinguish its product from
those of competitors.
Generic drugs are the same as branded medicines

Generics are the therapeutic equivalent of the originator branded

pharmaceutical products. They contain the same active substances and
thus are interchangeable with the originator product. Generics provide the
same quality, safety and efficacy as original branded medicines.

Branded and Generic Equivalent

When a new drug is released in the market, its manufacturer is

protected by a 17- to 20-year patent which grants him the exclusive right
to produce and sell it. Once the patent expires, other manufacturers can
COLUMBAN COLLEGE
OLONGAPO CITY

start producing the drug and sell it, provided that they get BFAD approval
for this.

Generic drugs are less expensive

When a manufacturer produces a generic medicine, it basically has
only its production costs to cover. It does not to pay for expensive research
and development costs because the formula of the medicine is public and
has been proven already since the medicine has been existing for at least
20 years already. Also, the manufacturers of generic medicines usually
incur minimal expenses for advertising and promotions. Therefore, it can
sell the generic medicine cheaper than the original drug.

Branded Drugs
A pre-requisite for the approval of all medicines, whether branded or
generic, is that the factories where they are manufactured must meet
certain quality standards. If the factories do not meet certain standards, the
BFAD will not allow them to manufacture drugs.

Appearance and Efficacy

Generic drugs work in the body in the same way and in the same
amount of time as branded drugs, because they have the same active
ingredients. Active ingredients in branded and generic medicines are the
same. But trademark laws do not allow generic drugs to have the same
COLUMBAN COLLEGE
OLONGAPO CITY
7

appearance as the branded drug. Colors, flavors and other physical

characteristics do not affect the way the medicine works.

As previously mentioned, both generic and branded medicine have

the same active ingredients. These active ingredients allow both medicines
to have the same safety, quality, and effectiveness. However, both
medicines do not have the same inactive ingredients. Since trademark laws
do not permit generic medicines to have the same appearance as its
branded counterparts, the former does not have the right to duplicate the
look of the latter. This is where inactive ingredients in medicines come in.

CHAPTER II
METHODOLOGY

In order to gather data for the research paper the

instrument that was used are survey forms. The areas that were surveyed
are Subic, San Marcelino and Iba because the researchers reside in these
areas and it is more convenient. Survey forms were used because it was
easier to collect the data and not a hassle for the correspondences. Two
sets of survey forms were used: 1.) For the drug stores and 2.) For the
consumer.

I. DATA GATHERING FOR DRUGSTORES

There are (4) drugstores that were surveyed: (1) Subic Mercury Drugs;
(1) San Marcelino Farmacia Lutgarada; and (2) Iba South Star Drugs
and The Generic Pharmacy. The drug stores that were chosen to be
surveyed are near at the center of services. The data was gathered by using
survey forms and there are (6) questions specifically:
1.) What medicine is more preferred by people?
2.) Which is more effective? Branded or Generic?
3.) Which is cheaper? Branded or Generic?
4.)What is more prescribed by the doctors to buy? Why?
5.)Between the Branded and Generic drugs have more side effects?
6.) As a seller what do you prefer most? Why

II. DATA GATHERING FOR CONSUMERS

There were (6) consumers chosen to answer the survey (2 consumers for
each area). The consumers were chosen based on their address and some of

them are in constantly used of medication. From Subic were Josielyn de

Perio and Ilona Macabenta; from San Marcelino were: Chris Darwin
Moreno and David Len Moreno; and from Iba were: Nery Jean Baldermoro
and Rezalyn Espinosa. The data was gathered by also using survey forms
and there are 5 questions specifically:
1.) Which do you prefer between branded and generic drugs? Why?
2.) Which do you think is more effective between the two?
3.) Which is do you trust more? Generic or branded
4.) Why do you think generic drugs are cheaper than branded drugs?
5.) What would you recommend people to buy?
After the survey, the data gathered were collected and compared. The
answers are presented in a table.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
COLUMBAN COLLEGE

I. CONCLUSION
Based on the data gathered from the survey forms, the drug stores surveyed in
Subic, San Marcelino, and Iba prefer the branded drugs over the generic drugs even if
it is more expensive. They say that the branded drugs are safer and it has good quality.
Based on the data gathered from the consumers, they also chose the branded drugs over
the generic drugs because it is also safer and its efficacy.
The researchers therefore conclude that the branded drugs is preferred in the
areas that were surveyed.
II. RECOMMENDATION
The researchers also recommend the branded drugs even if it is more expensive
than the generic drugs because these drugs are tested and the ingredients are exact. The
manufacturers are also trusted and approved by the DOH and FDA. The reaction of the
body to the drugs should also be considered and the generic drugs do also have the
same quality as the branded drugs but the down side of this is the side effects.
To the future researchers we recommend further observation and
additional number of correspondence and questions for the survey.
