Itinerary Specially Prepared for

DARAMALAN COLLEGE RUGBY TOUR TO NEW ZEALAND 2017

WELCOME
Welcome to the Daramalan College crew. We are delighted to have the chance to
share your company again. You are great sports tourists and we have built up quite
a history over the years. Your rugby team will no doubt acquit itself well and we
look forward to seeing the results this year against familiar opposition.

INTRODUCTORY NOTES

Weather: April is autumn weather, which means it can be very changeable.

Temperatures can fluctuate wildly, from high 20s / low 30s to almost single
figures. However, the average should be about 16 degrees Celsius.

Grounds: Grounds will be in good condition without the winter rains. If weather is
warm they could be very hard. Multi-studded boots should be adequate for backs
(no guarantee), but are unlikely to provide adequate traction for tight forwards.
Medium length studs recommended

Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is
common practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting
teams. This is meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as
they wish. Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m
line and front up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed
at the end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition.

Mouthguards: Mouthguards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand.

The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.

Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in
New Zealand age group rugby.

After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after-

match function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain.
The after match is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches are
made by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is
also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form
of a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/
badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served.

Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations
and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for
storing ice at matches.

First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game as it is in
Australia. Initial first aid is generally administered by coaching and/or management
staff. Emergency services are available for more serious injuries. The emergency
number in New Zealand is 111. There are after-hours medical services available in
all main centres. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services
including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travel
insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their own
policies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directly
with them.

alpine beech rain forests to Hokitika for your overnight stay.

Hokitika is now a relatively quiet township more dependent upon farming and
tourism than it was a 100 years ago. From about 1864 when the township
first sprang up it was like most other Coast towns a centre of boasting gold
miners, hundreds of hotels and liquor shops, dancing girls and a considerable
population of diggers from many parts of the world.

SATURDAY 15 APRIL
FRANZ JOSEF/QUEENSTOWN

0830 Breakfast at The Landing Restaurant. Packed lunches will be provided at

After breakfast check out of your accommodation and depart Franz Josef for
Queenstown - a distance of approx. 350km, travel time 4.5 hours. A stop at
lake Matheson is recommended. The walk is approx. 20 minutes each way
and well worth it!

LAKE MATHESON
At Lake Matheson, near Fox Glacier, nature has
combined exactly the right ingredients to create truly
stunning reflections of New Zealand's highest peaks -
Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman. The waters of
Lake Matheson are dark brown, so on a calm day they
create the ideal reflective surface. By a happy coincidence, the mountains to
the east are perfectly positioned to reflect in the lake. An easy walk passes
over the Clearwater River suspension bridge, just a few minutes from the car
park. The track continues through ancient native forest, including tall rimu
trees, to a pontoon that extends out to the lake. Lake Matheson was formed
about 14,000 years ago when the Fox Glacier retreated from its last major
advance towards the sea and left a depression which was filled with water.

Arrive Queenstown late afternoon.

Queenstown sits on the shore of the South
Islands Lake Wakatipu, set against the
dramatic Southern Alps. The surrounding
Central Otago region is known for its Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, and for
adventure sports. In winter, there's
backcountry skiing and the countrys highest
vertical drops. Summer brings paragliding,
mountain biking and bungee-jumping (Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is
among the sport's original sites)
