Instrumental Analysis Laboratory
Fall 2011/ 2012

Instructor: Dr. Sharif Arar, Ph.D analytical chemistry and biotechnology

Office: Chemistry building, second floor, room 107 C
Office hours: 11:00 am-12:00 noon Sunday, 1:00-2:00 pm Tuesday, and Thursday
or any time you find me in the office

Laboratory sections and time: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

2:00- 5:00 pm, chemistry building-Instrumental
Analysis Laboratory.

Back ground (course description): instrumental analysis laboratory (0303316)

in an undergraduate course that covers the following instrumental methods of
analysis: UV-VIS spectrometry, Atomic absorption Spectrometry, flame
photometry, gas chromatography, and High Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Learning objectives: prior general knowledge of practical analytical chemistry, and

instrumental analysis (course prerequisites) are assumed for
students of this level whom they are taking this laboratory.
Students will have hands on experience with advanced
instrumentation in chemical analysis including
UV-visible spectrophotometers, refractometers, Atomic
Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), Atomic emission
Spectrometers, High performance Liquid chromatography
(HPLC), and Gas Liquid Chromatography (GC) with different
detectors. In addition to this, they will develop skills like being
a team player through working in groups and technical writing
skills through report writing with criteria that meets this stage.

Laboratory requirements: Students before coming to the laboratory, they

should always through the laboratory session bring with them laboratory coat,
laboratory manual, note-book, and safety glasses (Mandatory). (Laboratory Policy).

Attendance and Excused Absences Policy:

The laboratory policy on absences follows the University policy, and in this case
students will have up to two absences. Any absences from laboratory should be
announced, if possible, in advance of the lab session, and the student missing a lab
will need to provide an acceptable excuse note to be offered an opportunity to make
up the lab. Also laboratory times should be respected, where maximum delay time of
10 minutes for students to be in the laboratory is allowed.

Grading system:

Laboratory reports 30%

Evaluation/ oral quizzes 10%
Mid term 20%
Final exam 40%

Laboratory reports: Students will learn how to write a laboratory report with the
formal format including: introduction, experimental part, results, discussion &
conclusion, in addition to answers to the experiment's questions, and reference.
This skill will be developed for each student through the whole set of experiments
through practicing reports for each experiment performed in the laboratory.

Evaluation and quizzes: evaluation for students through the whole semester will
be carried out by the laboratory instructor (Dr. Sharif Arar). Evaluation will be
based on the student's performance, including their knowledge of analytical
chemistry and how to prepare and handle solutions before the instrumental
measurement, pre-lab preparation, gained knowledge in the lab experiments, and
ethics inside the laboratory environment.

Oral examinations: will test every student about his knowledge of the previous or
past experiment he performed (theory, experimental part, laboratory report
contents, and instrument component parts and their function). The quiz will be
conducted through the laboratory session time, to measure the ability of students
of understanding basic ideas of the experiment. The questions of examinations
will be based on the experiment theory, experimental part, questions. Also what is
discussed on the board during laboratory times. Laboratory reports contain all of
this in addition to how to perform calculations related to the results of a certain
experiment.

Laboratory experiments: students will be divided into groups (minimum of two

students in the group) in the first week by Mr. Osam Tot (the lab technician). Each
group will perform one experiment per laboratory time and each student in each
group should hand in a laboratory report for that experiment. Report format and
certain rules regarding laboratory policy are handed to students in a different
sheet.

semester to supply the laboratory staff with written statement or comments
with no name on it, including the performance of the instructor of the
laboratory, the TA staff, the course content, the laboratory instruments ,
facilities, etc. Your percentage benefit from the course.
